Ocasionally there are pieces of art so excellent they make me mad. God, I say, I gotta get good like that. “Slow Shifts at the Double Axe,” from Passengers Journal 2.7, is one such story, with its richly-rendered-yet-impressionistic characters hitting all the marks of author Inbal Galboa’s choreography. The balance of narrative and sheer mood is masterful, and the mixture of fantastic dread and mundane terror is thrilling to follow along with. It is the sort of piece that makes me want to write.
Let those with unsteady stomachs steer clear, but to anyone who likes watching odd character dynamics unfold and unravel in extraordinary circumstances: consider “Slow Shifts at the Double Axe.”
The sin of not unknowing sleights of hand that trick the trick of nature from her lair is not so much original as planned, a plot to lose th
Ok I'm already stretching the definition of what a tableread can be but: I used to sit on the board of a lit mag in college and we almost published this one. More power to the Opiate for accepting this before we did. The final couplet of this sonnet--a form that still has teeth, it turns out!--gives me chills to this day.
Here's Something.
One of the pleasures of submitting work to lit journals--an emotionally up-and-down business if ever there was one--is finding a journal that really vibes with your aesthetic. Part of it is the the fun of tailoring a submission to the exact sort of work they'd like, of finding the exact points of common ground. But really the best part is reading through back issues and getting gut-punched by good poetry.
Basically I'm saying that if I find the sort of work that makes me say, damn, I want a place at this table--I'll spread that love around a little. I'll create the sort of space I'd like to read and be read in. Come in, sit down, if you like.
When @grmctyre517 says, Let's do a murder mystery Zoom read, what else can you do but assemble the best team and start working on your alibis? #evilunderthesun #zoomplays #tablereads #play #theatre #murdermystery #whodunnit https://www.instagram.com/p/CFXTaUggnK5/?igshid=1n5zuuhk28bba
In these times remember that the world is smaller than it's ever been. Check in with your nearest, dearest & communities in general. This photo is an example of how small the world is. Myself, Stevie & the show's #director Jack Paterson at @equityuk offices in London with the show's #translator (who was in Canada) via @skype, for a #RehearsedReading of #BarbedWire. It's such a thought provoking, interesting, exciting & dynamic piece of theatre that I feel blessed to have been a part of & I cannot wait to see how it evolves & reaches the stage when normalcy returns. Watch this space. Lets remember not to be despondent, keep flexing those muscles & being creative. Get some virtual #TableReads & rehearsed readings going. Come out of this tough period bigger & better (no matter what field you're in & what skills you have). If I can help in any way or you want to collaborate, just let me know. A Working Dinner w/ Episode 1
My favorite kind of dinner. A WORKING one. Whenever I get to act, I tell myself before I head onto set, “You get to play today. Now, go have fun.” Tonight was our first table read for a new digital series, and I was thrilled to find myself surrounded by talented and hilarious actors, and a kind crew. Of all the crayolas in my Crayola box I create with, acting will always be one of my favorites. So, a sandwich (sans bread because I’m detoxing from the nonstop travel of the past 8 weeks ), pickles, a lavender highlighter and words on a page really make my heart sing.💜 And, so it begins....
