I know TACC Jax isn't exactly the same as canon! Jax (and thank goodness for that), but does TACC Jax also have issues related to masculinity, even if they more outwardly manifest differently than in canon. I'm interested in the intersection between that and your Jax being Chinese, since Asian men are unfortunately stereotyped as 'less masculine'.
Also, I really like how your reworking not only makes the cast people of colour, but also takes their cultures into consideration! I think actually including people or colour in the lead roles is important in general, but especially when the original work was very white-centric with very few characters/voice actors of colour.
Yes. You're correct in assuming TACC's Jax struggles with masculinity. He already struggled with masculinity in relation to his own culture but when he moved to the United States: it infused his gender dysphoria mostly through a western lens now.
Throughout the reimagining he's alway searching for ways to gain and maintain power. He becomes Caine' advisor, embellishing who he was in this past life, and interacts with Caine's NPCs friend group he views as gods. Jax's fear of emasculation makes him jealous of the brown and Black human characters in the circus because of the hyper-masculinization they face. He has yet to realize how Western racism also affects his and others intersecting identities. IE: Zooble as a brown intersex genderqueer latine who's mentally ill.
Thank you. This reimagining originally started out as headcanons before morphing into its own version of TADC, because I wanted to research and respect their cultures first.
I also think it's very important to not only have people of color in leads and showcase their cultures too, but to prevent plastic representation and weed out plastic liberalism too. POC deserve to have their cultures properly represented with each other, not cramped into works that still prioritize whiteness as the default.
The majority of my cast views the circus as a type of afterlife. Caine respects their wishes in making the circus and having adventures reminiscent of their cultures too. As I mentioned with Jax, he does suffer from a slew of internalized prejudices and ignorance and the other members do as well, with themselves and each other. Being in the circus forces them to go confront themselves and one another, which usually makes them grow.
I plan to connect and explore the struggles they had in canon with their current race and ethnicity. Besides for Gangle, the cast grew up in their countries before moving to the United States. Gangle was born and raised in Rajasthan, India but moved to the US in her mid-teens
