Rear Details ~ Custom 1960 Cadillac Coupe de Ville
From the car files: ad for the 1959 Dodge Custom Royal convertible.
Nothing says "reliable automotive parts" like the subtle implication that your car might stall on a desolate set of tracks in the middle of a horror movie set. In 1962, United Delco wanted you to know that their batteries and starters were the only things standing between you and a very awkward conversation with a locomotive. The aesthetic here is peak Mid-Century "Land Yacht." Those rear fins are so sharp and aerodynamic they could probably slice bread or serve as a secondary rudder if the car accidentally ended up in a lake. It’s a wonderful slice of Americana where "adventure" meant driving the family to a place with no streetlights and hoping the alternator held out long enough to get you back to civilization. It’s moody, it’s slightly ominous, and it’s peak station wagon energy.
Sourced from the October 1962 issue of Reader's Digest.
Fin tails were a prominent styling element which was part of the "Forward Look" design introduced by Chrysler's design chief Virgil Exner.
