Who was specifically not invited to the wedding? - Misa.
I'm afraid I can ship Lawlight no longer as I did back in my teens, for I don't think regular Light is capable of any sort love or admiration that isn't directed to himself (except for Yotsuba!Light, I think Yotsuba!Light is super gay). My boyfriend commented that Takada was perfect for Light and I tend to agree. She's far more compatible with him than Misa or L, and, although I still think he is incapable of loving her, I can picture them on a stable loveless marriage.
Ahh yeah, I like takadaxlight too, but don't really see it as a perfect match in any way other than that they're similar people who would look good together in a surface sort of way. I think I'd feel bad for Kiyomi if she married Light because he was so inwardly condescending toward her all the time, whereas she genuinely admired him.
I didn't care about continuing to ship Lawlight when I revisited DN in my 20s, but their vibes were really hard for me to ignore yet again and it actually surprised me how much it still felt like a legit ship to me. To me the shippiest part is how Light never gets over L and puts him on a pedestal in both the manga and anime. I see him as gay and I think he's capable of possibly loving a man he respects, but also as someone who quite likes being alone and who is normally reluctant to feel emotionally dependent on anyone else.
I also think Takada would get the short and of the stick in case she married Light, but contrary to Misa, who doesn't seem to realize that Light doesn't love her and doesn't care, Takada seems smart enough to eventually notice that Light was never into her even with Misa out of the way. I imagine she'd probably ask for divorce, but I believe wouldn't be too happy to just let her go, unless she asked to have her memories wiped.
I think Kiyomi was definitely pretty shrewd about Light and a lot more assertive about how he treated her in comparison to Misa. To me it seemed like Misa was both delusional in believing that she could doormat herself into making Light fall in love with her, and also kinda didn't care how Light actually felt about her, as long as he continued to pretend to have feelings for her and let her appear to be his main squeeze. It was especially apparent to me when she had lost her memories and Light was outright telling her he didn't have feelings for her, yet she continued to guilt him and try to force him to be her boyfriend and encroach on his personal space. 😅 Nobody in DN canon is really relationship goals tbh, I just like putting the characters together who have interesting chemistry of some kind
🤯 and 💞 Kiyomi
KIYOMI + what’s a fact or bit of knowledge they don’t know but would absolutely blow their minds if they found out?
I think it would shock her that Light felt as sneeringly toward her as he did. He was really good at hiding his snarky thoughts and at promising her lots of things he never planned on actually delivering. She definitely was smart enough to sense he was probably a bit untrustworthy, but I think she never in a million years believed he’d actually be that cruel and cold-hearted to her in the end.
KIYOMI + what (if any) is their preferred way to receive affection?
She definitely likes compliments, though is shy about showing it:
As an aside, the looks on everyone’s faces around them in class are funny… are they annoyed that Light and Kiyomi won’t shut up in class, or jealous, or what?
Kiyomi Takada!
Oohh thank you Valentin!
KIYOMI TAKADA:
Who I pair them with:
Okay, so I love the idea of Takada with everyone in Team Kira. Light, Misa, and Mikami. They’re all so sleek and refined (well, with the exception of Misa) and bitchy and pretty and glittery-eyed? They’d just look really nice together, wouldn’t they. I haven’t thought about any Kiyomi crackships before, but could definitely be convinced to consider others as well. Maybe she’d pair up nicely with someone in the SPK, too…
Who I hate them with:
I love/hate her with Light. It’s one of those ships I enjoy because it’s kind of awful instead of because it’s healthy or good. I picture Kiyomi as Light’s “ideal” match for fitting in with society and getting ahead in life the way he always strives to, but one that would still feel emotionally hollow to him despite everything seeming so perfect between them on the surface. I also loved the little details between them in canon, like the fact that Kiyomi was the one who made the first move with Light and asked HIM out instead of vice versa! I think she was very practical and strategic about things and possibly using Light just as much as he was using her in the university arc, even if she did have genuine feelings for him, too. She’s a cool character and I wish we’d seen her rebel against him a little more in the last half of the plot; she was definitely smart enough to question him inwardly a lot!
As an aside, I loved how these two were written together in the “Those” fic especially because she was complexly written and it showed that they could make a very good team, and that she wasn’t necessarily being duped by Light as much as strategically pairing up with him to meet her own goals, but it also had that emotional disconnect between them because of Light’s lack of respect for her and his preoccupation with his own ambitions and with L. There’s something depressingly satisfying and cathartic about exploring that stuff to me.
Why I like/hate them:
I love her polite-yet-catty demeanour and her smarts and ambition and her reserved-yet-flashy style. She’s a fun mix of things, similar to how Light is! I think she’s got a secretly wicked sense of humour, but also a very serious and idealistic mind and a strong moral code, too. She’s pretty close to how I’d imagine Death Note with a female protagonist, which is a fun thing for me to think about. I really like her and I want to re-read the manga again soon, because I only fully appreciated her character for the first time during my thorough read-through of the story last year.
Favourite physical feature:
Her hair is so cute!
Least favourite quality in the character:
I’m not sure I really have one? My least favourite thing about Kiyomi is that we didn’t get to see her realize her full potential in the story, which is basically a gripe with every female character. She was smart and interesting and could’ve had a better ending or more agency than she was allowed by Ohba.
3 Headcanons:
(1) She cut her hair short in high school to prove she didn’t need long hair to be hot
(2) she had a minor sleeping pill addiction when she was Light’s mistress because of the stress
(3) she cares a lot about her family and is very close with her parents
My OTP for said character:
I guess I would say Kiyomi/Light because it’s the one that interests me the most, even though it’s not one I think would be truly end game for either of them.
Uh. Takada + if she had been formally arrested and executed?
There would be a huge public uproar if Takada was arrested because she was a celebrity and adored and revered as Kira’s chosen spokesperson. Though I suppose if Kira was also captured and dethroned simultaneously the majority of the public would likely turn on him and suddenly be out for her blood, too.
I feel like she would definitely play victim as much as possible and try to find a way to bargain out of the death penalty. She’d have the best lawyers money could possibly buy. She’d get lots of visitors, like her relatives and friends and some of her leftover fanatical followers, and probably a lot of death threats and fan mail, as well. But she’d be waiting for Light’s call or visit most of all (if she didn’t already find out about him being killed). I think she would possibly get very mad and spiteful about everything with Light instead of defeated and sad. She had a lot of pride, and wouldn’t take kindly to him failing her and humiliating her and abandoning her like that. She really did love him too, though, so she’d certainly grieve the loss of their imaginary romance and the false future together he built up in her mind.
The world would be following the story very closely, and once she was executed there’d be tributes made to her by remaining Kira worshippers who’d see her as a martyr, alongside celebrations about her death by Kira detractors. I’m sure Sayu and Sachiko would find both sides of it horrible – she was Light’s university friend, after all, and they’d remember her as a very respectable, charming girl – so they would probably avoid all news about Takada as much as they possibly could.
Any Kiyomi Takada headcanons?
Yess I love her!
KIYOMI TAKADA HEADCANONS:
- Kiyomi’s not always proper and solemn and no-nonsense at all. She’s got a sly and somewhat wicked sense of humour, which is why she invites Misa over for an awkward frenemy dinner when she’s secretly also seeing Light- she counts her calories fastidiously and always has to hit the perfect number, or else her whole day is thrown off- she considered dating Light in university to be a mutually beneficial arrangement and didn’t mind the idea of them both using each other to get ahead, though she also genuinely had feelings for him- she always carries a separate change of clothes in her bag in case she ever gets a spot on something; she cannot stand being less than immaculate in public- she finds Misa’s recklessness and wild style both trashy and weirdly fascinating, because it’s so opposite to anything she’d ever be- she was the only one in her high school friend group who dared to cut her hair short, and they were all envious of her ability to pull it off so well- she chose to go into media because she was passionate about her ideals and knew she had a charisma and a classic look that people would pay attention to and trust- she always avoided recreational drugs and looked down on such things, but had a sleeping pill prescription that she sometimes abused during her time as Light’s mistress because it was so stressful to be that deceptive and duplicitous and worried about his approval all the time
