What if? Month - Disney's Dark Side
(I'll be taking a short break. One post today, then multitude later.)
When I heard Maker Studio was bought by Disney, I shrieked in horror!
Of course, you might say "Being bought by a big company won't hurt anything, just look at YouTube or Tumblr..."
Yeah, I know. I'm just remembering the last time Disney had a web studio.
So, there was this studio or a production company called take180.
Now most of you will go 'huh? I never heard of that site,' and read on.
Some of you will boil in anger as you think it was bunch of stupid imbeciles chugging flashy, lowbrow laugh to 12 year old who just bump into YouTube, and secretly hypothesize that the studio might have been the seed that started this whole mess.
Well, others have this flashing in the back of your head and you remember all the glory of Electric Spoofaloo and web series like I heart vampire and I alibi... featuring a young actress you now know as Allison Brie and that's moment you fell in love with her... you now remember... oh, all the memories...
Okay. Let's get back to the topic.
So, if you remembered take 180, can you find it? Answer is... no. It's gone. Completely gone. Where is it?
Well you might figured out that it was part of Disney. And you might read some accounts of how the studio pushed around to every corner of Disney... switching offices every few weeks until... poof! It's gone.
People there still work for Disney... perhaps they will move to Maker, starting a new adobe. Some have move on, working in backgrounds... either on or off camera... but is this sad?
For those of you who remember, Take180 is what made Shay and Shane and Toby work together... perhaps it was the inspiration of The Station (although The Station might happened little bit earlier) which created Maker Studios, which was bought by Disney... and cycle begins again.
Whatever you think of take180... it was a grand endeavor foreshadowed many to come... it's sad to see there's so very few left....
(Take180's side channel, The So What, still exists but all videos are unlisted... You can find then if you look hard enough... and the shows are little corny, but it's okay.)
So the what-if is... What if Take 180 still existed? What if Disney had taken the chance they were so blind to see? Will we love the skits they put out, or will they get stale? I think Take 180 had the propensity to move with the time... it would've been very valuable indeed.... but Disney's trashed like a last night's pizza. (And those are good! Why are you throwing them away!?!)
If you remember take180, tell us about your experience with the channel. Did you like, did you hate it? Do you think it was revolutionary? Or hackneyed? (You could argue both.) Give us your thought here today.
