There was a bully at my school when I was in 4th grade. One day, he went to the park down the street from my house where me and my friend were playing. He pushed us both in the mud, punched me in my face and my friend in her back. Both of us bruised. We went home crying. Chances are, this boy had issues. As an adult looking back, yes, he needed help. But as a child, I saw a boy, bigger and stronger than me, bully me and my friend. And I remember thinking, some day, I'm gonna be the bigger and stronger one in a situation. And in my 10 year old head, I thought, I'm never going to do that. I'm never going to bully anyone. Long story, short (too late), this bully never got a statue in our home town. And funny thing, I stayed true to my promise I made to myself at 10. I wouldn't ever bully anyone. Even if I was the bigger or stronger one. And I didn't need a statue of him to remind me of this. So, yeah, you say this is your heritage. These hateful flags and statues. But, in a simpler, waaaaaay less of an impact example, a statue of my bully wasn't needed to remind me not to bully. Why do you think people who had relatives raped, abused, mutilated and killed should walk by statues of the abusers to preserve your heritage? Frankly, why are you so proud of your heritage that is stained with the blood and tears of oppressed people? So, yes, please, pull the statue down. You want to honor Abe, you don't need to cast it in iron or stone; a reminder of the abuse to honor him. No human should have to walk by a statue depicting the people who enslaved their family. That's simply cruel. (In Lincoln's case, he didn't believe Black people should vote or intermarry. And supported returning runway slaves to their "Master") No one will forget what happened if this statue is gone.
