The Case of Narcissistic Abuse in Thor Ragnarok
The way Thor and Loki relationship was portrayed in TR has bothered me and some of the fans. We have discussed it many times that it wasn't the beautiful reconciliation that it is shown to be. TR made Thor and Loki go back to where they started. I want to approach this discussion a bit differently this time. Before I start I need to point out that I'm not a professional in psychology and I might make mistakes.
It is always said that Loki is an egotistical narcissist. I have to disagree. The only time Loki acted narcissistic was in Avengers and he wasn't himself in that movie. Thor was the narcissist before his banishment and I mean Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
"Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) involves a pattern of self-centered, arrogant thinking and behavior, a lack of empathy and consideration for other people, and an excessive need for admiration. Others often describe people with NPD as cocky, manipulative, selfish, patronizing, and demanding. People with narcissistic personality disorder are extremely resistant to changing their behavior, even when it’s causing them problems. Their tendency is to turn the blame on to others. What’s more, they are extremely sensitive and react badly to even the slightest criticisms, disagreements, or perceived slights, which they view as personal attacks. For the people in the narcissist’s life, it’s often easier just to go along with their demands to avoid the coldness and rages."(X)
While Loki was suffering from low self-esteem or possibly BPD(Borderline Personality Disorder). Although I can't be sure about BPD. Because not every emotional out-burst is a sign of personality disorder.
"Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a mental illness that:
makes it hard for a person to feel comfortable in themselves
causes problems controlling emotions and impulses
causes problems relating to other people.
People with BPD have high levels of distress and anger. They can easily take offence at things other people do or say. People with BPD might struggle with painful thoughts and beliefs about themselves and other people. This can cause distress in their work life, family life and social life. Some people with BPD harm themselves."(X)
"When you struggle with BPD, poor self-esteem may aggravate the anger you may experience. Various issues can be stored up and stay unresolved, often left to explode."(X)
Thor and Loki both was improved much in case of personality in TDW. At the end of the movie, Thor didn't act much narcissistic anymore and Loki while still had issues, was free of his anger and the need to please others. But in TR their relationship is even worse than the first Thor movie. Their relationship fits the dynamic of a narcissist and an their victim. It's just plain disgusting. TR tried to show Loki as the narcissist with building a statue of himself, that stupid play, the claim of him never changing his ways, but all of these are just acts. When it comes to serious situations and his relationship with Thor, everything changes. Let's see how Thor acts like a narcissist in TR:
“Sense of entitlement: Because they consider themselves special, narcissists expect favorable treatment as their due. They truly believe that whatever they want, they should get. They also expect the people around them to automatically comply with their every wish and whim. That is their only value. If you don’t anticipate and meet their every need, then you’re useless. And if you have the nerve to defy their will or “selfishly” ask for something in return, prepare yourself for aggression, outrage, or the cold shoulder.
Exploits others without guilt or shame: Narcissists never develop the ability to identify with the feelings of others—to put themselves in other people’s shoes. In other words, they lack empathy. In many ways, they view the people in their lives as objects—there to serve their needs. As a consequence, they don’t think twice about taking advantage of others to achieve their own ends. Sometimes this interpersonal exploitation is malicious, but often it is simply oblivious. Narcissists simply don’t think about how their behavior affects others. And if you point it out, they still won’t truly get it. The only thing they understand is their own needs.”(X)
The picture is taken from this post.
“You Know, go ahead. Stay here and enslave people for that lunatic. Keep drinking, keep hiding. But me...I choose to run toward my problems and not away from them. Because that’s what heroes do.”
In case of Loki, it gets even more complicated. Loki goes to Thor, to mourn together, to explain to him why he didn’t help him, to get Thor to understand him. But how Thor reacts? He gives Loki the silent treatment, refuse to understand him and then blames him. And Loki doesn’t visit him again.
Later when they meet again, Thor wants to talk. Loki can only talk on Thor’s terms. In the elevator, Thor says some very hurtful things that are disguised as a sign of his love. Because Loki is not the brother Thor thought he would have, he isn’t good enough, and it’s better that they never see each other again. That’s what Loki always wanted! Since apparently if Loki wants equality, it means he doesn’t want to see Thor.
When Loki refuses to act as Thor wants, and betrays him(honestly what do you expect after that speech? loyalty?), Thor punishes him with the ”obedience disc” and Thor gleefully preaches him on change and growth, while Loki is writhing in pain.
How Loki reacts after that? Like someone with a Self-love Deficit Disorder(SLDD):
“When an SLD sets a boundary, insists on fairness or mutuality, or attempts to protect themselves from harm, the PNarc[Pathological Narcissist] partner punishes them with some form of active or passive aggressive retaliation. The actual consequence, or the threat of it, freezes the SLD inside their unhappy dysfunctional relationships. Over time, the PNarc achieves complete dominance over the relationship because they have systematically extracted any semblance of self-confidence and courage from the SLD.”(X)
And this is why Loki returned to Thor. This is why it wasn't a reconciliation. Thor blamed Loki, refused to hear his side of story and empathize with him, treated him with passive-aggressiveness, acted like a perpetual victim, belittled Loki because he hadn't acted the way Thor wanted. And Loki, because of his loneliness, his lack of self-esteem, self-love and self-worth returned to get some form of acceptance from Thor.
Compare this to gotg2. Gamora and Nebula fought an talked and understood each other, properly reconciled and Gamora respected Nebula's wish to leave, while Thor used reverse psychology and manipulation to keep Loki beside him for some scrap of affection.
“Maybe you are not so bad after all“
I've dealt and still am dealing with a narcissistic person in my life. So I'm kind of good at recognizing them. Loki wasn't the only one who was abused by a narcissist. His fans were also abused by his treatment and the implications of TR. The belittling, gaslighting and bashing of Loki's issues were also directed at us who identified with him. And the people who are responsible for it are CH and TW. And I’m not going to stay silent and accept this abuse. If IW continues this path and this dynamic between Thor and Loki, I don’t want to see it. I don’t want to see narcissistic abuse as an acceptable form of relationship. And I don’t want to see TR Thor ever again. I hope Russo brothers give us a better Thor, who isn’t ooc and narcissistic. I want our old Thor back.
