LGBTQA 30 Day Challenge-Day 3

Day 3: Bisexuality - Does it exist? Explain your answer.

As I mentioned before, I believe that sexual orientation is a spectrum, some people reside at one end being completely straight, only being attracted to the opposite sex, whereas others reside at the other end being completely gay and only attracted to the same sex. I think those who are ‘true’ homosexuals or heterosexuals (were/are never attracted to the opposite or same sex respectively) are quite rare and the majority of people are found in the middle. Bisexuality, I believe, does exist but in varying degrees. If someone claims to be heterosexual but has been attracted to someone of the same sex at one point in their life, then I don’t believe they are a ‘true’ heterosexual found at the extreme end of the spectrum but possibly just one notch next to it, ever so slightly closer to the homosexual end. The closer to the middle of this ‘sexuality spectrum’ someone falls, the more equal the intensity of his or her attraction to both sexes.

  Personally I don’t know whether to classify myself as bi because my attraction to men far, far, far outweighs my attraction to women. So I guess I would say I was straight with gay tendencies although there have been times where the intensity of my attraction to women has increased, just not to the point to overtake men.  

  As if by perfect timing I just watched a story on ‘This Morning’ about a guy who was married to his wife whom he absolutely loved and had 3 kids with and thought he was only ever attracted to women, until he stumbled across gay porn and realised that he was actually attracted to men. It seemed as though he didn’t even become bisexual or go through a transitioning phase of bisexuality, but more like one day he was only attracted to women, the next he was only attracted to men. I think within the space of a few years he was married again but to a guy. I know I said I believe that sexuality is very fluid, but I didn’t actually think it could be this drastic this quick. Wha’d’ya know apparently it can.

LGBTQA 30 Day Challenge-Day 2

Day 2: Has anyone ever come out to you, and how did you take it? If not, how do you think you would take it (ie. were it, a close friend, relative, neighbour). (For those who are part of LGBTQA, if you have come out, how was it received, and if you’re not out yet, how do you think it will be when/if you do?)

No one has seriously come out to me before. I have a friend who told me he was gay but seeing as at the time I had only known him for an hour beforehand I'm not counting that. Either way, I took and would take it very well. I don’t care about someone’s sexual identity,  I care about their personality, if they're a horrible person I won’t want to know them, regardless of whether they are LGBTQA or not. Personally I don’t 100% identify with heterosexual and my friends didn’t care either way when they found out. Sexuality is a very open topic with me and my friends, a couple of them are lesbians so its not really seen as anything strange or different. I would never tell my parents on the other hand as although claiming to be quite open on the subject they still have quite opinionated views which still makes them slightly uncomfortable with it.

LGBTQA 30 Day Challenge-Day 1

Day 1: Is it a choice? Do you or do you not believe that those who are a part of the LGBTQA community chose that place for themselves? Explain your answer.

I believe that it isn’t a choice. I think you are born with whatever sexual identity/orientation you become, already a part of you. Just like you can’t force yourself to love someone you are not attracted to, you cannot consciously change your sexual identity. If it were a choice then the LGBTQA community wouldn’t even exist; in today’s society its still a controversial subject, with a heterosexual identity still seen as the norm. As young children are extremely impressionable, they would grow up with examples of the ‘normal’ heterosexual identity and would be influenced to simply ‘choose’ that, generations would pass and only the occasional ‘rebellious teen’ would choose to identify with the LGBTQA community, I think therefore proving it cannot possibly be a choice. I do think it can change over the years however, as I believe that sexuality is a fluid notion that can genuinely shift from one end of the spectrum to the other, yet still without the control of the individual. The only part of sexual identity that I think is a choice, is how you respond to the cards that you are dealt.
