Target Audience Video Notes:

Children’s fiction:

There is a difference between picture books and chapter books, and smack between them are early readers.

I don’t know much about children’s fiction for younger age groups, but I’m continuously surprised by what is actually perfectly okay for children’s consumption.

In one of the how to train your dragon books (which are lovely btw) there’s a plot point where Hiccup has to steal a potato from the frozen displayed corpse of his enemy’s father, and in a book for any other audience that would be gruesome, but when it’s introduced as a funny quirky thing children don’t bat an eye.

Middle Grade:

Kind of the high end of children’s chapter books meets the low end of young adult, usually targeted towards 8-12. They’re shorter than YA, and often more straightforward, which protagonists 10-13 years old. They’re less graphic in every sense, but can still be scary and tense. (There’s a big push for more horror MG right now, though I forgot to mention this in the video.)

Themes are generally centered around family and friends, including parental guardians, and how the protagonist fits into their life.

Often lighter and funnier than YA books. Writing with a humorous voice is a huge thing.

Young Adult:

Target audience is teenagers (12-18) but some hit younger teens and some older. Many adults love YA books too, which is good and great, and adults should never feel any shame for enjoying them, but we still can’t forget that these books are written for teens and the opinions of what adults what to read in them is irrelevant.

The main characters are teenagers.

Heavy focus on themes of finding oneself, first loves and heart aches, and often leans heavily toward rebellion, such as choosing an indemnity of a love in opposition to what controlling parents or governments or society thinks.

Often high concept, must grab the reader’s attention immediately with a plot they can’t resist.

New Adult:

Targeted toward primarily collage and early career aged individuals, (18-25), and covers many parts of the transition into becoming an adult. Does this sound vague? That’s because it is.

Some publishers have tried to make it a thing, but it’s more or less fading. Most agents won’t even mention it in their mswls.

Adult:

Old people. You know, over 18. Teens will often read adult books too, but as with adults reading YA, these books aren’t written for or targeted at teens, so teens who read them have to go into the book knowing it might get graphic.

Often slower and grittier, with more emphasis on narrative voice then a catchy plot. They can have erotic scenes and a lot of cussing and incredibly dark situations, but they also don’t have to.  

Themes are literally everything.
