There is a deep part of you that associates instability with being alive, with things actually happening. When life is calm and when nothing is going wrong you feel restless, bored, maybe even anxious. It’s like your body doesn’t know what to do without something to react to. This often comes from a past in which things were unpredictable, emotionally unstable and/or constantly changing. You had to stay alert, ready to adapt, ready to deal with the next issue before it even arrived, and over time that state became your baseline. Peace challenges you because it forces you to sit with yourself. And when you sit with yourself in silence there is nothing distracting you from your thoughts, your feelings, or your memories. Chaos gives you something to focus on, something to deal with outside of yourself. It gives you a sense of purpose even if that purpose is just surviving the next emotional wave. You might notice that when things are finally going well you unconsciously create problems or move more towards dramatic people and situations. Not because you want to suffer or anything, but because peace feels unsafe. It might feel as if something bad is about to happen like the calm before a storm you’ve been trained to expect you know?. There is also an identity aspect to this: you’ve built yourself around struggle; being strong, enduring pain, pushing through. these things are deeply tied to how you see yourself.
