just speaking from my own quite limited perspective, I’m someone who wasn’t “driven out” of fanspaces per se—but put off before that could happen—nearly a decade ago, by seeing other people with similar experiences and/or ideas and impetuses for creation actually getting hurt and deciding I had no wish to be on the chopping block next, as well as just a couple particularly strong personal slaps on the wrist (+ being rather strongly asked to share personal details I was not going to) for even expressing thoughts about, e.g., abuse. and I actually do still find the experience to be one of the major things affecting my engagement with my interests in a pretty broad sense as a full grown adult almost 10 years later. I think I would have found great relief, particularly at the time, in both darkfic and community, and I didn’t because the space was hostile. it’s much less so now, in the space I’ve carved, but I’m still fucking terrified to even talk about ssc bdsm half the time 😭

so I find it baffling and a little hurtful sometimes to have shown back up to see many people (many of whom were there in some capacity, even if not full participants) just pretending that it didn’t happen or like we can’t effectively censor one another. I do want to be as charitable as possible with people’s intentions, be happy for changed minds, and presume the best in general. but at the same time, complete lack of acknowledgement of past harm rarely tends to prevent a return to form. and all this whilst there’s still some glaring empty spaces where others who were driven out and still haven’t returned once resided. and, of course, when people are actively still saying that shit. lol.

and also cutting into my own complaining to say thank you for making this experience that I’ve had over the past almost 1 year(!) posting on here very different and much better. I do complain sometimes and get upset, but like, both online and irl this is my first time just openly talking about and exploring a lot of my ideas. and I’ve been met with mostly good faith and incredible kindness, and that means an enormous deal to me. and this isn’t about anyone in the fandom(s) I am now a part of; it’s about the post going around about peer censorship and related discourse crossing my dash. ok that’s all love you rant over.
