“Ladies and gentlemen! Welcome to the second round of the Vytal tournament,” The AI’s voice boomed over the speakers as her face appeared on the screens standing alongside the top edges of the arena, the crowd’s cheers matched her volume, “I can hear you’re all excited! So let’s bring the teams up immediately!!!”
With that, the two platforms on the opposite sides of the arena raised up with a team on each. The crowd screamed and cheered the names of their respective favorite team.
“On the far side, Is Team OLVR of Beacon Academy,” The AI remarked, a cheerful smirk on her blue-tinted face, “So our dear Headmistress can certainly pick a favorite!”
“I swear,” Weiss scowled as the crowd laughed and hollered at her expense, “I’m wiping that AI and starting over anew.”
“Shush shush shush,” Sun scrambled to the window, looking onward like a child outside a candy shop, “My school’s first team is up.”
“On the OTHER far side, is Team RNBW of Haven!”
“Those,” Sun excitably jumped up and down, “Those are my kids! My kids!!!”
“Relax boy,” Adderin’s gruffled voice came from behind them, “You’ll embarrass yourself should they lose.”
“They won’t. I know they won’t.”
“Oh,” Weiss’s eyes lit up at the challenge, “Care to...make this interesting then?”
“Hmph,” Sun eyed the lien card Weiss pulled from her jacket, and returned her cheeky smile, “I’d love nothing more.”
“Could the two teams make themselves known? First! Team OLVR!”
At the AI’s request the leader of OLVR, Olive Char, raised up his hand; his stance and actions all demanded a sense of respect, while his face proved he had the temperament to back up that demand. The second member looks around with a harsh stare at the audience, as if sizing up the crowd rather than her opponents. The third member jogs in place, with a pace that amazes those who can see she’s not even breaking a sweat. The fourth member stood tall over the third, his watchful eyes intent on protecting his little sister. Their weapons floated upon the magnetic plates ahead of them.
“Thank you thank you,” The AI boomed, “What a wonderful introduction!”
The AI continues after a quick pose, “Now! Team RNBW, if you could introduce yourself as well?”
Just as their opponents did, the team in reference stepped forward with the leader, Rosalia Amora, pointing down the arena towards her opponents with a grin on her face, dragging her thumb across her throat. An action that causes the crowd to go wild. The second member steps to the back of her leader, wearing a smirk, and elbows Rosalia to say an unheard comment that causes the leader to laugh. The third stands there, her eyes intently flicking between her weapon and her opponents, her reserved body language seems to indicate a lack of expectation from her teammates, as she’s seemingly on guard even when only around them. The fourth stood there, toying with a dust infused bullet in her hand, spindling it in-between and through her fingers as she glares down the battlefield. Their weapons also floating in front of them.
“Perfect! Now that introductions are made,” The AI’s face disappears from the screens, changing to the status of the teams, “Can our lovely announcers count down the fight?”
“Three,” Blake’s voice sounded throughout the arena, the crowd’s cheers became deafening.
“Two,” Jaune’s voice surprisingly had some excitement to it, the teams below prepped themselves for the oncoming battle.
“One,” Ren’s voice was a cheerful jump away from Jaune’s gruff excitement, the tension between the teams could be cut with a knife.
Penny’s ecstatic shout shot off like a gun and both teams immediately grab held of their weapons. Olive Char picked hold of his pickaxe and before any of his team could run forward smashed it into the ground, splitting a chunk of the arena floor apart. Quickly floating it up with use of his semblance he dropped it in front of his team, creating a covering wall from any frontal assault. Giving them some breathing room to explain the plan. The second of team OLVR, Lucius Ava quickly expressed her resentment to this course of action as she picked up her two swords, giving them a quick spin before putting them in their sheaths, she made no moves to go against her leader’s plan, not yet. Violet Star, the third member, catches the pair of daggers thrown to her by the fourth, her brother Reynaldo, who then picks up a large great-shield and hooks it onto his arm.
Meanwhile, Team RNBW collects their own weapons, casually speaking to each other with no worry as they do so. Rosalia Amora takes hold of her courtsword and places the quiver of arrows for its bow form on her back, she quickly takes a few practice swings before stabbing it into the ground, turning to her team to speak about how they’ll deal with the wall Olive placed between them. The second member of RNBW nodded her head in agreement with her leader’s plan, grasping hold of her dual khopeshes, but fumbles and drops one on accident. Lillian Blanche was seemingly the only one who was unembarrassed by her teammate's clumsiness, she stepped forward to grab her weapon, a large flambard that makes her already small size shrink even more so in comparison, despite seemingly not listening, she stayed by her leader to hear the plan out. Wisteria Caramine, the fourth of RNBW, grabs her dual pistols from the magnetic levitation. With a single fluid motion, she loads in the bullet she was toying with and stares down Violet Star of OLVR who’s peeking out from their cover.
“Interesting, and a smart move,” Ren’s voice comes over the microphone.
“How do you mean, Ren?”
“Don’t get him started Penny,” Jaune responded before Ren could even open his mouth, “He won’t stop.”
“If I could only say one thing,” Ren’s voice held just the slightest amount of irritation, “I’m amazed at the quick thinking, making a form of cover on an otherwise perfectly flat piece of terrain? Genius.”
“One might think,” Blake jokingly teased, “You’re a teacher or something.”
Wisteria spun her pistols around her finger and fired a shot at the peaking opponent, sending her back hiding behind the wall of arena floor propped up on its side. Team RNBW looked on expecting something to happen, Wisteria began to pace back and forth as her teammates made a plan.
“I could charge,” Her cold voice taking the interest of her team, “Jump over and fire down onto all of them.”
“One of their weapons was a giant shield,” Lillian’s quiet voice held a tinge of irritation, “You out of all of us should know what that means.”
“Hmph,” The leader steps forward, taking her sword from its place in the ground and watches it morph into its bow form, “So direct weapons won’t work too well, let’s focus on semblances then. And quickly, I’m bored.”
“If we even get the chance to use our semblances,” Naja narrowed her eyes, her entirely serious and determined demeanor a change from her aloofness in the beginning, “Remember all of us except you have to physically touch our oppon-WAIT WHAT ARE YOU?”
The leader of RNBW lets loose an explosive fire dust tipped arrow before any teammate could stop her, it blows the cover set up by OLVR away in an instant, revealing three members of the rival team. RNBW quickly begins their charge after a quick set of curses from all but the leader, with Wisteria firing shot after shot from her pistols, forcing the three OLVR members to take cover behind Reynaldo’s massive shield.
“You think she’s going to listen to the plan?”
“Yes,” Olive glanced from his weapon to his teammate, “She will.”
Team RNBW was now nearly right on top of Team OLVR, happily so.
“What,” Rosalia snickered as OLVR stood up and faced them, “One of your friends run off scared?”
“Not quite,” Olive twisted the base of his pickax, the ax itself dropping from its handle by a chain and extending into an anchor, “If you’d be so kind as to look below you.”
Team RNBW collectively looked down into a pool of black mist, and all attempted to jump out. Naja Acacia and Wisteria Caramine fell quickly back to the ground, looking down to see pitch black arms gripping tight onto their ankles, Lucias Ava forms slowly as the smoke collects back into her everyday form, the screen showing the team OLVR’s aura states hers had lowered nearly into the red. Wisteria attempted to shoot but was flung over Lucias’s head and smashed into the ground behind her, dropping her aura down into its midpoint. Lucias took her now free hand and readied it to strike Naja, pulling the latter into the strike. Naja’s aura dropped by nearly a fifth. Olive flung out his weapon and allowed the anchor to wrap around a retreating Lillian Blanche, pulling her back into a combined attack from Violet and Reynaldo. The quick succession of stabs from Violet’s daggers and the finale of Reynaldo smashing the bottom edge of his great-shield into Lillian’s stomach both drop her aura instantly to the red and cause her to collapse on the ground. The buzzer plays, indicating a combatant is out.
“Shit,” Rosalia spits out a curse towards team OLVR, shifting her weapon back from its bow form into its sword form, “One out, one almost down, one hurt a bit. But me?”
Rosalia lifts her weapon and sprints towards Violet, “I’m still here, don’t you dare forget it!”
Violet, who was cheerfully celebrating her and her brother’s victory prematurely could hardly turn in time as the sword came slicing down against her back, dropping her aura almost to the red and sending her stumbling forward. Reynaldo angrily shot out his hand to grab ahold of Rosalia but missed as she dropped low and sliced her sword to his stomach twice, spinning around him and stabbing her sword to his back, this all quickly drops his aura to the red and he collapses, the buzzer sounds indicating a player is out. Meanwhile Naja, who’s fighting sword and sword with Lucias, is in a stalemate, they’re swords clashes and sparking. Quickly Naja pushes upward, breaking the hold and kicks Lucias in the gut, sending her flying back and her aura dropping. Olive took charge towards Naja, spinning the anchor along the end of his weapon and sends it flying with a toss. Naja can only see the anchor out the corner of her eye before the chain goes taught and Olive pulls the anchor back into her, smashing her back towards him, her aura dropping lower on the way. Her flight through the air is halted as her back collides with Olive’s outstretched foot, snarling as he watches her body bend backward over his leg, her aura dropping down to the red as she collapses down to the ground.
“My my,” Weiss said cheerfully, looking out over the battlefield, “It appears you may lose that bet after all.”
“Hmph,” Sun punches his fist into an empty hand, “Don’t count us out until the last of us falls.”
“So,” Violet stands up, shaking her head as her aura sparks, “Did we win?”
“Not yet,” Olive looked over to Lucias, who was angrily approaching him, “And sorry if I took your mark. You were taking to long.”
Lucias remained silent as she stomped her way towards her leader, flicking her wrists which transformed her swords into their chained whip forms, her eyes intently watching Olive.
“Stand down Lucias,” Olive narrowed his eyes, tightening his grip on his weapon and preparing himself for any insubordination, “You don’t want to-”
His words were cut off as he ducked down to avoid being hit by his teammate’s weapon slashing overhead. It did, however, hit Wisteria Caramine, who had taken the chaos of battle as an opportunity to sneak up on Olive with serrated daggers in hand, the slice of the whip drops her already low aura into the red, the buzzer sounds off as she hits the ground. Olive’s face actually holds a bit of surprise.
“Ah,” The surprise fades quickly into his usual stoic appearance, “Thank you.”
“Hmph,” Is the only response given as Lucias returns the whips to their sword form, glaring down at the angrily panting Rosalia. The final standing member of team RNBW.
“Well,” Rosalia slowly reached for an arrow from her quiver, “Looks like it’s just me, and you two.”
“Hey,” Violet defensively jumped up, “I’m here too! Don’t think I’m not a force to be reckoned with just because my brother is down and o-”
Violet’s words were cut off as the arrow Rosalia grabbed was flung at her, an electric storm exploding around her. After a few moments of convulsing to the electricity Violet’s body falls limp and hits the ground, another buzzer sounds.
“If that girl’s aura was any lower,” Blake’s voice, despite not being loud, demanded the attention from the crowd, “It would have been grounds for disqualification. Or worse.”
“Aye,” Jaune’s voice was emotionless, “We don’t need anyone dying.”
Lucias screamed at the realization of what Rosalia just carelessly attempted to do and charged, slicing downward as Rosalia blocks the attack with her sword. The smile on Team RNBW’s leader’s face only made Lucias angrier.
“Lucias,” Olive’s voice shouted from behind her, “NOW!”
With that Lucias returned the same smile to Rosalia, disappearing into a puff of black smoke which nearly instantly cleared. Rosalia could only look on in a shocked stupor as Olive was falling down towards her with his weapon raised behind his head, prepped to smash down on her.
“Shit,” Rosalia drops her weapon as she watches the pickax come down towards her in what appears to be slow motion, “Guess I am out.”
The buzzer sounds as Olive’s pickax smashes his opponent into the floor of the arena, a large dust cloud of broken debris flying around the battlefield.
“With that! The match is over!”
The crowd cheers and chants Team OLVR’s name as the AI retakes her place on the screens, clapping along with the crowd.
“What an amazing match, you could feel the heat in even the coldest reaches of Atlas! Everyone, give it up for your victor, Team OLVR!”
“It was quite the match, a smart beginning,” Ren again complimented the quick thinking of OLVR’s leader, watching the team pick themselves back up, “I’m glad to see my students so cleverly integrating their semblances into the match.”
“Mhhm,” Jaune remarked, ‘Perhaps our dear friend Headmaster Wukong could learn a thing or two about teaching semblance use from you.”
“Ha,” Blake laughed, “As if he’d pay attention that long.”
“Back to the match,” Penny attempted to bring the focus back to where it belonged as the crowd’s laughter at Sun’s expense died down, “It was amazing to see such organized combat. I would hope the team that unfortunately lost learned something!”
In the Headmaster’s special area, Weiss was happily holding out her hand to collect lien cards from Sun, who was angrily muttering to himself.
“Oh come now,” Weiss teased, “You know Blake and I, as well as everyone else, appreciates your friendship.”
“Oh I’m sure,” Sun said, placing the final card in her hand, “It’s a friendship I couldn’t live without after all.”
“I can’t believe you young ones sometimes,” Adderin spoke from his seat, his hands folded over the top of his cane, “Making bets, honestly? Have more respect for your position.”
“I must agree,” Weiss stated, checking up on the security forces, “And Weiss, it appears you have a guest that snuck through.”
“Of course,” Weiss took out her scroll and stared at the image of a rose flashing on it, “You’ll all have to excuse me, Blake and I have some matters to attend to.”
The crowd gave a final cheer as the teams went to their respective starting zones and sunk back down to the waiting area.
“Alright everyone! We’re going to take a bit of an intermission to fix up the arena,” The AI’s voice cheerfully exclaimed, “Please go enjoy the festival while you wait!”
