Something Lost

Percy stepped into the small room, which was decorated only by the green paint on the walls, and a small crib over which hung a mobile with fish dangling from it. His fingers traced the walls, painted with seaweed curling up from the floor – a present from Rachel when she found out that Annabeth was pregnant. A lump rose in Percy’s throat, making it suddenly difficult to breathe, he sunk to his knees, clutching his stomach as the painful ache burned through his chest.

Behind his closed eyelids, he saw the crumpled mess of the car, windows shattered, metal crumpled, blood leaving tracks down the paintwork. It must have been so quick, did she think of him before she died? That flash of panic as she realised it was the end? The firemen who pulled her body from the wreckage told him that it looked as if she had attempted to protect her stomach.

But to no prevail.

They were both gone now.

Percy thought of the truck that had crashed, head-on, into Annabeth; the man driving it had walked away with a minor head injury. He would go in his life, he would go back to his family and hug his children, sleep in his bed with his wife. Would he carry the guilt of killing a woman and her unborn baby with him? Would he think of Percy? Of the destruction he had caused, of the hole now gaping in Percy’s heart? The life that had been taken from him, in a flash.

Percy looked around the room now, empty as it was, and pictured Annabeth, covered in paint, laughing at him, with her hair tied up in a messy bun, her stomach rounded under a large Yankees t-shirt, so alive, so happy, so bright she shone like the sun, brilliant and blinding.

He pictured her again, pulling on her coat and picking up her bag to leave the house. She turned to kiss him before she left.

‘Be careful,’ he said, placing a hand on her stomach.

‘I’ll be fine,’ she laughed. ‘You worry too much.’

And now she was gone, and he was alone, staring at the wall of their baby’s room, a baby who would never grow old. He would never send her off to her first day of school, never see her graduate, go to college, get married, have children of her own. He imagined her face now, round and chubby, with Annabeth’s eyes and his hair, she would have been smart like Annabeth. He would have given her anything with one look from those pleading eyes, just like her mother.

A breeze curled in from the open window, embracing Percy. For a moment, he imagined Annabeth’s arms around him, her hair tickling his cheek, her lips at his ear, whispering something impossible. Something gone. Something lost.

The breeze dropped, and he was alone again, shivering and afraid in a world he did not know any more.
