It was the morning of October 31st, the Phantomhive manor received a knock on the main doors.
*Knock!* *Knock!*
Alois jumped up and down as he waited impatiently for Ciel to open the door. He was wearing a prince costume, and beside him Hannah smiled and affectionately reached out to tuck a piece of flaxen hair behind his ear.
“Patience, Master.” came her gentle voice. “I’m sure Lord Phantomhive will come soon.”
Alois groaned and tilted his head back slightly. “Ugh! Can’t he go any faster though? Everything is going to be shut down soon at this rate.”
To his liking, the door finally opened and there stood a tall, dressed in black butler giving his usual calm smile at the expecting guest - of course it’s Sebastian.
“Hello, Sebastian!” Alois chirped. “Is Ciel ready to go trick-or-treating?”
His facial expression didn’t change. “I’m afraid to apologise, but my so- I mean, master isn’t quite himself at the moment, lord Trancy.”
Alois frowned. “What do you mean? Is he okay?” His tone was laced with concern for his new friend.
“Oh you know how he is. He attempts to put his duties for her majesty first before anything entertaining.”
The tone in his voice shifted to sounding disappointed in his own master.
“But he promised he’d go trick-or-treating with me this year!” Alois griped, and Hannah put her hand on his shoulder. She looked at Sebastian. “Is there anything we can do to help?”
“Well you’re both still guests.” He moved aside to let them in. “So you’re welcome to stay if he does so change his mind later on.”
They both walked inside and bowed respectfully to Sebastian. “Where is he?” Alois asked as he set his bags aside.
“Oh he’s in his office as usual during this time of day.” Sebastian informed as he picked up the bags.
Alois nodded and headed upstairs to Ciel’s office, knocking on the door. Sebastian attempted his best to warn the young lord that Ciel wished to not be disturbed, but it was unfortunately too late.
~
Alois stood outside the door and waited rather impatiently. He didn’t appreciate Ciel’s unwillingness to participate in such a special night. Ciel had promised Alois, and now he was breaking his promise? Such behavior would not be tolerated.
“Ciel!” he called. “I want to talk to you!”
At first, there didn’t appear to be an answer. But Alois briefly heard an annoyed groan on the other side. He tapped his foot impatiently and rolled his eyes. Who was Ciel to call him dramatic? Running low on patience, he decided to open up the doors himself.
“There you are! Why is Sebastian telling me you don’t want to come trick or treating?” Alois flung his arms across his chest as he glared at Ciel.
“Keep your tone down, Alois.” Ciel stated with his hand over his face.
Alois shook his head. “I won’t! We talked about this for weeks. Why did you change your mind at the last minute?”
In a slightly annoyed manner, Ciel stood up from his chair and pointed behind him at the window. “First off, do you have any idea what time of day it is?”
Alois followed his friend’s gaze to the window and pouted. “I’m aware it’s not even dark yet, but I wanted to spend more time with you.”
“If this was a few weeks ago, I would somewhat agree. But unfortunately, change of plans do exist.”
“I’m aware of that, but you promised me. I can’t believe you refuse to even have one night of fun,” Alois griped as he flopped down in the arm chair. “You’re always sitting here in your office doing paperwork for the Queen.” He sighed and tried to hold back the tears that were welling in his eyes. “Can’t you do something entertaining for a change?”
No words came out just yet. Ciel only continued to stand and stare, still inner struggling to cope with these new things coming into his life - having a new friend like Alois is one of them.
Alois scrubbed furiously at his eyes. “I’ll leave I guess.”
Those words got to Ciel deeply. He suddenly reached out for his partner. “No-”
The blonde boy whipped around as Ciel grabbed a hold of his jacket. “What?”
He opened his mouth to speak, but was hesitant, he released his grip on Alois’ jacket and took a breather before speaking.
“it’s just…” he stuttered. “It’s just that I’m still new to all of this… I mean- being a kid again.”
There was a pause.
“For the past three years, I’ve been obsessed with my own selfish goals that I pushed aside anyone before they can get too close with me. I’m not saying that I’m giving up on those said goals, since it’s too late for that now…” Ciel reached for his eyepatch so Alois would get the message.
“I understand.” Alois nodded as he looked his friend in the eye. “I’m sorry I didn’t consider that.”
“Do not apologize…” Ciel’s voice sounded more calmer now. “I shoul’ve considered letting you know a lot sooner.”
Alois shifted his weight from one foot to the other. “I shouldn’t have been so brazen. I’m still a guest, after all.”
Ciel only nodded in agreement.
“Shall we get going then?”
One more slight hesitation and then he gave out a quiet “yes.”
Alois squealed and jumped up and down, throwing his arms around his partner. “Oh, I’m so excited you changed your mind!”
Ciel thought to himself. ‘Did he seriously just forgot my serious confession just there?!’
Alois pulled away with a grin. “Of course I know about your contract, silly!”
Before Ciel could say anything back at him, a light knock came from the door. *Knock*
Alois raised a brow. “Who could that be?”
The door opens up revealing the Violet-haired maid with a slight concerned expression on her face. “Master, is everything okay in here? I thought I heard Lord Phantomhive yelling.”
There was a sense of doubt within her eyes, but being Alois’ humble servant, she sets her suspicions aside for now.
“Very well. I would also like to inform you that Michaelis has everything prepared for you both for tonight.”
“Okay, Hannah. We’ll be down shortly.”
She bows politely and heads outside with the door semi-shut.
Alois faced his companion once more. “Shall we go now?”
Ciel sighed. He was still in the stage of acceptance of allowing himself to be a child once again, but on the other hand, he does not want Alois to have come all this way for nothing. Deep down, maybe something good might come around this evening after all.
He looks at his partner with a slightly forced smile. “Okay.”
All smiles came from Alois from then onward. From meeting Elizabeth later that afternoon, to the very moment they went trick-or-treating together that night. Somehow, in some way, getting to be a real child again with the two people his age made him more comfortable; he even cracked a genuine smile at some houses’ doors.
He ended up not caring that some found it off to see the Queen’s guard dog act so childish, he knew that his fiancé and new best friend partner would straighten them out.
But even so, there was still a lot left to do to fill that empty void in the young Phantomhive’s heart.
