forever thinking about how van's name really encapsulates the themes of rebirth and religion and faith and loyalty within her arc

how "vanessa" comes from the amalgamation of "ester" and "van" (from vanhomrigh), so it means of/from a star (fire imagery), or of/from myrtle leaves (religious imagery). how, in greek myth, myrsine won the favor of athena and the envy of other atticans for her athletic achievements, was murdered, and then "reborn" as myrtle because of athena. how, similarly, myrina devoted herself to aphrodite and, after her murder of her husband and subsequent transformation into myrtle, aphrodite made myrtle her sacred plant because of myrina's loyalty. how van is the original disciple to lottie's prophet. how van is reborn because of lottie's deer bone. how van's survival and loyalty to lottie is what sways many of the yellowjackets to believe, too. how van still believes decades after their rescue. how van never lost or removed that deer bone, even as she isolated herself from her fellow survivors. how van is so loyal and devoted to those she loves and believes in that she will tie herself to tai and follow her into the winter woods in her pajamas and wear chafe-marks on her wrists and write i <3 u in her own blood to convey that love and devotion

how "vanessa" is a genus of butterfly and how butterflies often symbolizes transformation and rebirth. how van is reborn through fire. twice. how each rebirth results in a change, a transformation in behavior; how she becomes bitter and resentful towards jackie after jackie left her for dead in the burning plane, so different from the girl whose very smile was said to make jackie happy in the pilot; how she becomes devoted and ever faithful to lottie after her prophecy and deer bone save her life, even though it puts her at odds with tai. how van lives with terminal cancer, her body destroying itself because its growing too quickly, uncontrollably, invasively; the double-edged sword to her body's incessant need to transform and rebirth itself

how "palmer" means "pilgrim", from Latin palma (meaning palm tree), because pilgrims to the Holy Land often brought back palm fronds as proof of their journey. how van travels to the revered and spiritual---first to the wilderness itself, then to the wilderness symbol, then to lottie's cult. how van had to go on foot through the woods, in an attempt to escape the wilderness, only to find her faith in the process. how her scars and survival are proof of her journey. how palms are burned and their ashes are smudged on the foreheads of worshipers as a physical reminder of their mortality. how van herself is burned and covered in ash, time and time again, but survives despite her mortality. how van's facial scars, which appear prominently on her forehead, serve as reminders of her mortality, her faith, and the love of those around her. how van is the most visibly changed yellowjacket, never able to "escape" or ignore the wilderness like the others, no doubt in part because she wears its very presence on her face. how van, despite the many times she's been near fire and almost burned alive, has no burns to scar her skin. how van has been associated with fire and death since the pilot. how van was meant to be the first to die in the fiery plane crash but lives well into her 40s, unburned

one thing that bothers me a bit is how xefros is portrayed a bit but it's mostly in joxef

i personaly dont ship them anyway, but i see mtf xefros so commonly intertwined with that ship

i personaly dont like that hc either.. i've heard someone argue that "doc scrach goes for girls" (paraphrasing) but that could easily get disproved/debunked by Xefros simply being sheltered from a lot of things and therefore easier to manipulate. even with that thought in mind logically scratch has have had to try manipulating ONE boy at least before focusing solely on girls (also he has literally said that he's a boy so that hc goes against canon. which is another thing i don't like)

on to my main point. i don't like how two-dimensional he gets portrayed a lot.. like YES he is a sweetheart but NO joey wouldn't be a better moirail than dammek (i think she's be worse actually). moirails are supposed to push you into a better version of yourself and comfort you when you need them, i don't think joey is doing much for either qualification.. only thing she pushes is just her insistence that Xef should break up with dam without even trying to THINK about giving dam any sort second chance or trying to understand things from Xefs perspective!!!!!! my second hand (not moirail jfyi) that i talk to about this pointed out how Joey is bad at admitting fault and i really don't think xefros needs someone like that in his life. don't get me wrong XefMek is also a very flawed relationship and that shouldn't be swept under the rug but one thing dammek has is that he does his best to protect xefros and keep him safe. is he good at it??? depends on the situation, but we also need to keep in mind he's schizophrenic and so that blur of reality is clearly impacting his ability to be the best moirail he can. i believe he was better when he was younger and his symptoms hadn't kicked in yet!!!!

as for the comfort part of my moiraillegence simplification (yes i got side tracked) it's off screen but the whole stress crying scene...i feel like it should have been on screen.. cause troll tears are tinted by color unlike human tears, so logically that should freak joey out a little. but how does she react to such a moment with an alien she barely knows.. would she try to comfort him cause he's upset or is she just... letting it happen with no interference????? if she were to comfort him, would he let her????? cause he's still in a pale relationship with dammek so logically if he'd let her he's basically cheating and i don't think he would do that. Could have really explored somethings with that.
