At TED Counttdown, I was finally able to sit down and connect with Sophia Kianni, a climate activist and founder of Climate Cardinals, a nonprofit that exists to increase access to climate information among people who don’t speak English. Sophia was inspired to become a climate activist in middle school when she took a trip to Iran, her parents’ home country, and she was shocked by the amount of pollution affecting her community. She realized there was a huge barrier when it came to speaking about climate change in Farsi. This inspired her to start Climate Cardinals, which has translated and sourced climate information into over 100 languages. To date, this international movement spans 41 countries and has reached over 500,000 people. It’s truly an honor to speak with another environmental educator in this space, making waves for accessible, equitable environmental education.
