“Do you come here every day?” Adriana asks. She glances over Ella’s overly-worn outfit, not cruelly, just acknowledging the information in front of her and the mismatch with the latte habit. “I’m just picking up for my, um—my roommates,” Ella says quickly. “I don’t—I couldn’t afford to, you know.” “Your roommates don’t buy you a coffee?” Ella shrugs. “I mean, it’s their money, I guess. Kind of. Um, yeah, not really.” She looks down at her feet like she did the day before, figuring she’s pretty much screwed up this interaction—whatever it was. But then a firm fingertip pokes under her chin and lifts her face up, and Ella feels a shiver go through her whole body. “You know it’s not polite to look at the ground when you’re talking to someone,” Adriana says. Again, it’s not mean exactly, just firm, so it doesn’t make Ella feel as totally like shit as it could have. She just wants to, well, obey. So she looks up, right into Adriana’s green, green eyes. “Let me buy you a coffee,” says Adriana. “It’s no fun to have to smell it every day without getting to taste it.”
‘you think so?’ peter’s head tilted, taking a real good look at what was scrawled all over the newspapers on the stand. he was half-certain a child could’ve written it—he couldn’t understand a word hardly. but then his eyebrows fell into a crease and he turned to look behind him at zora. ‘when did you—how are you always here?’ peter exclaimed, a mixture of surprise and unsettled curiosity. this wasn’t the first time zora had crept up on him.
