On Wednesday night, I tried to queue a photo and video of my little Christmas tree for Christmas morning.

No sooner had i created the post when instantaneously Tumblr flagged it as explicit and blocked it with the following message:

"Based on our User Guidelines this post contains sexually explicit content and is now only viewable to you."

WHAT?!!!

It's official - Tumblr's AI has reached new levels of insanity and is getting nuttier by the minute. Nuttier than a fruitcake.

Yes. Unbelievable.

I truly shouldn't be surprised by anything anymore. Only in this 'lovely decade and century' could something like this happen.

More and more, I feel as though I come from a different time, and somehow was dropped off in this place that I no longer recognize.

We are being subjected to an out of control and extreme world.

When I read the book 1984 by George Orwell, I was only 13 years old. It disturbed me deeply to a level that I never felt before.

The idea that we'd one day be subjected to mind control. stripped of all individuality and humanity. That these things called telescreens would monitor and censor us, terrified me.

And here we are. Constant Surveillance. Telescreens watching and listening, creating perpetual censorship.

I had to request a 'review' to have the photo and video 'released.'

THERE was no crystal ball, no religious apparitions or voices from the dead when George Orwell wrote Nineteen Eighty-Four, accurately depicted our present almost 70 years ago.

It’s no coincidence that Orwell’s 1949 novel had climbed back into multiple bestseller lists this year — people have realised its scarily accurate foretelling.

In 2013 its relevance — still strong and worryingly reliable — led to the West End smash hit adaptation of the book, which is currently showing in Australia.

The book is one of the greatest dystopian novels every written. It looks at a future where people are controlled into what to think, how to act and how to live by the Government known as Big Brother. It uses telescreens, fearmongering, media control and corruption to control the masses. The main protagonist is the initially apathetic Winston who craves something more than the controlled world he inhabits.

Corey McMahon, the associate director of the 1984 production in Australia, said the book’s reach and resonance will always continue as it speaks to more than a literary audience.

“It speaks to a world filled with unpopular policies and world leaders,” McMahon said.

The production takes a deeper look into some of the core themes of the novel such as governmental surveillance through the subconscious co-operation of the public through their screens. You are reading this very line on one of your ‘screens’.

McMahon said the production looks to act as a sort of catalyst for its audiences to look at the world in a different light. To question what is true and what isn’t, to look beyond the political spin.

“We are so busy Facebooking, Snapchatting, Tweeting etc that we are missing what is happening in the world,” he said.

He pointed to a quote from the production he said not only sticks out to him every time, but one that he think will challenge audiences to really think about the world they inhabit and how they chose to be a part of it.

The line is from one of the characters that works for the Government, otherwise known as Big Brother. He says: “The people will not revolt. They will not look up from their screens long enough to notice what’s happening.”

This line was written almost 70 years ago. Orwell didn’t have a crystal ball, what he did have was an understanding of the human condition and its weakness. Apathy.

I have always been used to telescreens, and the thought of being constantly monitored by them. They had never really bothered me, or caused me any trouble, up until recently. At the beginning, I would usually just avoid the telescreens, especially the one in my living room. I can’t exactly pinpoint what started this annoyed feeling towards them, but I was definitely starting to go out of my way to avoid them. The weird thing is that I didn’t avoid them to do anything suspicious or against the law, simply the idea of a telescreen watching me in the privacy of my own home disturbed me. As time went by, my hate and disgust towards telescreens started to grow. I began to understand the real purpose behind them, and what they really represented. It wasn’t the idea of being watched by a weird device that bothered me, but rather the power that it gave the government over me. I think that most people have become ignorant to what is really happening, especially regarding telescreens. They have become used to the idea of a device watching you all the time to be normal, when in reality, it is everything but natural. In fact, I believe that it is a violation to our rights, privacy and freedom. Of course, if I ever get caught having these liberal thoughts, the thought police would vaporize me in the blink of an eye, because according to the party, “freedom is slavery”.  I, on the other hand believe that telescreens are the real cause of slavery, because they have got us all brainwashed. We are under their power, and the worst thing is that we are too ignorant to even realize it. I am so sick of telescreens that if I had only one wish, I would wish to have them all disappeared. I guess that I am getting way too political in this blog, but it is my only way to vent.
