Am I the only person that dreads their favorite books being turned into movies or shows? With the exception of Game of Thrones and maybe a couple others, every tele adaptation of books I know have twisted the story and changed much that it makes the original series look bad.

Throne of Glass is one of many titles I like to stay as books, especially since Hulu, of all the companies and channels in the world, is making the adaptation. If HBO was making it, I'd feel differently though.

I don’t know about you, but a lot of my favorite television shows used to be books. By now, it’s a cliché (and definitely unnecessary) to point out how often great movies and television shows are based on literary properties, but the fact is that some of them are much better than others.

I will say that it was difficult—and maybe impossible—to rank all of these wildly different shows against each other. But now, without any further ado, a definitely correct, current-as-of-this-moment, officially official ranking of the greatest literary adaptations on television. (Let the debates begin!)

These are my top ten:

Heads up booklrs

After a trial run of having a sideblog, I created @books-on-a-wire for bookish content. It's only got a few reblogs now but I'm going to be adding new content there and queuing up older posts (see tags below for content). I will still be following from here. Thanks to all that follow me!

What was this weird fixation in the 2010s with taking some sporatic elements from a comic book and then “adapting” it into a procedural.

You know what I’m talking about right? the only similarities would’ve been maybe the name of the series and the names of some characters. Beyond that entirely different plot, original characters, setting etc.

Off the top of my head iZombie and Lucifer, but I’m sure there were more.

I’m guessing it was probably so they could cash in on the IP without having to make an expensive production out of its elaborate story. I think procedurals are pretty cheap to make, and a tried and true formula.

Now I think we’re moving away from that with the disappearance of Network television and the mid-budget show.

Nowadays studios are more willing to make an expensive streaming show, and more faithfully adapt its source material to try to mitigate fan backlash.

I brought up Lucifer earlier, so it’s more recent counterpart is Sandman. Compare those two shows, same source material very different adaptations.

Which isn’t to say we never got full T.V. adaptations in the 10s, ala The Walking Dead, just that they were rarer.

But what do I know, I’ve never worked in T.V.

I’m a sucker for scary stories. I love hearing them. I love watching them. I love reading them. (Though I should be careful to point out that I am not into the super-gore or ultra-violence thing. Just no.) Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House scratches that itch in every way. You may remember her from such tales as “The Lottery”—scarring middle school readers for life practically since its publication in 1948. What makes Jackson’s work stand out amongst the rest is the psychological artfulness with which she crafts her tales. In the same way that “The Lottery” is actually about the latent antisemitism of many sleepy American towns (her words), so too is The Haunting of Hill House about the paradoxical balance between resentment, grief, guilt and fear. Recently relieved of the suffocating role as her sick mother’s caretaker, Eleanor Vance longs to embrace the new-found independence she dreamed was waiting for her in the wake of her mother’s death, yet is shocked to find that she can’t quite leave her past behind and still find herself in the process—And the harder she fights to belong, the harder she feels set apart. This book ain’t for the faint of heart! Oh~ And the Netflix series ain’t bad either, though the characters have been changed considerably.
