‘Look at the card on the wall.’
‘I can barely see, do you really think I have the ability to read- fuck.’
Your hands find Ten’s as yet another contraction tears through you.
You’re in your bedroom, kneeling on the floor, hands gripping wooden side of your bed.
Your midwife was on the way. Ten had called her around a quarter of an hour ago, and she had instructed him to begin inflating the birthing pool you had rented.
Your bedroom was covered in coloured card that Ten had written ‘encouraging’ messages and pictures along with some you had purchased, but it was hard to read them when the pain you were feeling made tears well up in your eyes.
‘You can do it,’ Ten recites the words to you,
‘At the end of all of this pain, we’ll meet our baby.’
You repeated his words in your mind, chanting them over and over like a mantra as your contraction subsides.
‘If she doesn’t make me explode first.’
‘Chaisee, Charlie, my love, stop hurting your mama now.’
Your midwife arrives shortly after, and she helps Ten pump up the inflatable pool together between contractions. eventually, they’re done and you’re four centimetres dilated.
The sound of the water running keeps nearly lulling you into sleep before the surges wrenched you from it.
You lay on your side on your bed, admiring the artwork blue-tacked to the walls in an attempt to distract yourself.
‘Do you like it?’ Ten asks, joining you on the bed after helping the midwife attach a hose to the bathroom tap and feed it into the fully blown up pool.
‘I can’t even remember you doing it,’ you mutter, ‘did you do it just for today?’
‘Yeah, I’d think about you and Charlie and just draw whatever came to mind.’
You notice one picture in particular, a small tiny baby surrounded by planets in a circle, with the sun shining above. It was coloured, which was odd since Ten didn’t usually colour his art.
‘What were you thinking about when you drew that?’ You point to it, eyes tracing the rings of Saturn.
‘I kind of just realised that she’s the centre of my universe.’
‘Yangyang is right, you are cringey.’
’Shut up, let me be soft with you, you’re about to give birth to our first child.’
‘If I can get through this first.’
‘You will, I promise, I’m right beside you.’
A few hours later, you’re sitting in the tub, head thrown back against the inflatable rim, trying to focus on the sensation of the water bubbling underneath you.
Ten is sitting on the top of the small stepladder you actually used to get in, so he’s slightly above you, feeding you ice chips and rubbing your forehead and shoulders.
‘Count with me,’ Ten murmurs, ‘one, two, three, four, five…’
The contraction fades away, leaving you sweating and aching.
‘Not long now,’ he assures you, combing his fingers through your damp hair.
You’re nine centimetres, and quite out of it, the amount of gas and air you’d inhaled making you practically sky high.
You lay your head in his lap, staring up at him while he continues to play with your hair.
‘Are you okay?’ He asks and you smile absentmindedly.
‘I think so,’ you murmur, ‘feel very numb.’
‘I know… I feel like I can feel her there.’
‘Do you want me to get in now?’
After stripping off his shirt, he’s sliding in the pool behind you, wrapping his arms around your frame and rocking you through yet another contraction.
‘Fuck- ow- I think she’s starting to move down- shit!’
‘Do you feel like you need to push?’ The midwife asks, immediately swinging her leg over the side of the pool and getting in.
‘I- I don’t know- she’s moving down but I-‘
You grab Ten’s hand, squeezing it hard and performing the breathing exercises that you had learnt during your classes.
‘I need to push,’ you croak, feeling Charlie’s head.
‘Ok, next time you have a contraction you can push, okay?’ The midwife instructs and you nod, screwing up your face.
‘You can do it, love, I know you can,’ Ten whispers in your ear, ‘you’re so so strong.’
You pushed with all of the strength that you could muster, the pain making you nearly scream. Once the contraction is over, you practically collapse against Ten’s chest.
‘You did really well,’ the midwife praises, and you listen to Ten echo the same words.
You push for thirty minutes before she’s nearly out, head and shoulders completely out.
‘One more, just one more and she’ll be here.’
You drive your chin into your chest as soon as the surge begins, pushing with all of your might.
You feel a sudden absence between your legs, put your half-shut eyes follow the red shape from under the water as the midwife steadily brings her above water.
Charlie’s already screaming and crying as soon as she breaches the water, having taken her first ever breath.
She’s laid across your chest, minuscule hands curled up into half fists.
The midwife wraps her up in a white fluffy towel, gently cleansing her of the leftover blood on her body.
Your heart is beating so loudly in your chest you’re sure that Ten can probably hear it. Your chest is exploding with pure love, Eos much that it’s hurting more than you’ve ever experienced before.
‘Y/N, she’s so…’ Ten doesn’t even finish his sentence, knowing that you could already complete his thoughts.
‘Our little Charlie,’ you sob, ‘our perfect girl.’
‘Look how gorgeous she is,’ Ten’s voice is shaky - he’s crying too.
The midwife snaps a photo of the scene as you had requested previously.
Reflecting on the words he had said to you earlier, you completely agreed. She was the centre of your universe.
