It's interesting, isn't it, how characters evolve over the years without your knowing it? Or how minor ones suddenly want to tell you the depth of their backstory while you're still struggling with the details of the "main" characters.
I wrote a few scenes in high school hoping to finish a short novel and compete in the L.Ron Hubbard competition before I found out a) how questionable the organization surrounding said competition was and b) that my parents basically had my schooling covered (for which I am beyond eternally grateful.) I'd jotted down a basic plot and knew about how it would go, and had even started the introductory scene for the two leads, but they were never properly fleshed out, never had any real interesting reason to be going off and doing great things. All the while the "cowardly" shapeshifter in the background was tugging at my sleeve and whispering details in my ear which I jotted down and remembered to this day. I even tried bringing him and his decidedly unfriendly sister into an online roleplaying game the get a better feel for them outside the surrounding story context, but it turns out I suck at speedy replies to RPs and dragged everything down for the faster players.
I've never forgotten him though, nor the mechanics I jotted down for making his magic work. Maybe it's time to pull him out and dabble a bit again.
