"Sinister Angel"
Homebrew D&D One Shot #17
I didn't love my last witch one shot so here's a new one that's more closely based on the Ravenloft region of Tepest. I feel like this hits a more Halloweeny vibe. Also I've play-tested it twice now and the second time was my best session as a professional DM yet.
Azalin Reviews: Darklord The Lady of the Lake
Domain: Castle Island Domain Formation: 744 BC Power Level:💀💀⚫⚫⚫ Sources: Servants of Darkness (2e), Gazetteer V (3e)
Within the Mists of Ravenloft, Pocket Domains may appear. These are Domains within another Darklord’s Domain. Today I shall review one such Darklord contained within a Domain on a small island on Lake Kronov in Tepest, The Lady of the Lake.
The Lady was a guardian of a Lake from a land now lost to her who seemingly appeared out of no where into Tepest one day. I suspect the memory of her past was denied her by our Tormentors as they once did to me.
The Demnach family lived in a castle on a small island on Lake Kronov, though knew little of the Lady. As a guardian of the lake and a sirine, the Lady took little interest in the affairs of mortals and they, in turn, took little interest in her.
That was until she met the Avanc, a man she saw as kind-hearted. The two quickly fell in love and, as these things go, the Lady was soon with child. Mere days after celebrating the Lady’s pregnancy, the Avanc decided it was a good idea to insult a powerful fey. Not at all surprising, the fey retaliated by transforming the Avanc into a hideous monstrosity covered in scales and gifted with powerful claws.
The Lady was horrified by her lover’s transformation until she discovered his gentle nature and spirit remained within. Knowing this, she swore to restore him to his true form one day.
Ione Demnach, a paladin, heard tales of a monster dwelling within the waters by his family’s castle. He sought out the ‘beast’ and slew it without a second thought. Let this be a lesson to you all. Never trust a paladin. Always trust the lich instead. Afterall, brains always defeat brawns in the end.
Discovering what Ione had done, the Lady sought vengeance. She sang her dark desires into the whole of Tepest and it was the Three Hags, the Darklords of Tepest, that came to her. They weaved spells over the sirine to grant her wish, but the gifts of Hags always come at a steep price. The sisters transformed the baby she carried into her tool of vengeance and the Lady was told that the child would be born and grow quickly into a beautiful and powerful sorceress, but she would fade rapidly there after.
When Katherine was born, she reached adulthood in a few short years. The Lady sent her to seduce Ione and ensured his wife caught them in the act. His wife fled in despair and as she knelt by the waters of Lake Kronov, the Lady promised her a painless existence beneath the surface where no man could ever harm her again. She took the Lady’s hand and as she drowned with the lake, the Lady’s promise was fulfilled.
Katherine gave birth to a fish-like caliban who was Ione’s son. The Lady named him Madchen and claimed him as her own. She raised Madchen to despise the Demachans as much as she did and after a year he was a full grown brute. The Lady sent her grandson and daughter to destroy the Demnachs.
As good children do, they obeyed and every Demnach was killed by their hands until Ione was the only one left. Neither Madchen nor Katherine survived this day and Ione was left mortally wounded as Madchen fell. In her final act of vengeance, the Lady offered Ione a healing drought and being the dim-witted jock that he was, Ione drank it without question. Instead of healing him, the potion kept him alive and forever in immense pain.
At least it would have if the Mists had not taken The Lady and Castle Island in that moment and transformed it into a pocket Domain. Within the Lady's Domain, Ione is a pile of bones, Demnach Keep is a ruin, and the Lady can never fulfill the revenge she so desperately craves. The Avanc lives once more, but cannot enter the Lady’s Domain nor is he the gentle, intelligent beast he once was. Now he is nothing more than the mindless, violent beast Ione had believed him to be. The Lady is a sirine or a water fey who can breath both air and water. She takes on the appearance of a mortal woman and uses her beautiful songs to lure victims to the edge of the lake’s water. Despite this, Castle Island is nothing more than a small angry Domain for a small, angry fey.
m... dnd.... Not gonna go into detail lest a fellow campaign member follows, but tree guy is named Halcyon and they are my Hexblood, Circle of the Shepherd Druid :3c They are also from the Tepest Domain from the Domains of Dread!
Despite Vlad Drakov's efforts to rebrand Falkovnia, it appears the nation is floundering. As recently reported, Falkovnia's citizens are fleeing the domain like rats from a sinking ship- except it's perhaps the rats that are staying behind in charge. Drakov has in recent days attempted numerous strategies to regain lost tax revenues. However, success in keeping to keep his borders closed for Drakov seems as slippery as Soth's resolve. This is because efforts rarely address the core problem- that his management is running it into the ground. Drakov's nightly impalings to lively dinner music do little to earn subject loyalty, for example. Apparently, offering Bloody Red Verified User checkmarks to speedup time through military checkpoints hardly seems to make up for the daily threat of having a spear through your gut.
Still, Drakov considers his land's lack of popularity to be a mere branding problem- hence renaming it "Super Happy Fun Land." (His initial idea of a name was inexplicably "Y"- perhaps as in "Y are you leaving?"- though his Ministry of Marketing at least managed to convince him only the greatest fools would rename a domain to a single letter. Whatever the case, it seems to have little effect in helping Falkovnia reestablish itself. And so once again, Falkovnia invaded the market but was repulsed- or perhaps it was repulsive.
Super Happy Fun Land's failures occur in the context of newly rising competition- though in some cases the competition seems to be doing little better. The Rex has established a nearby community on the border called "Dreads" to lure in Falkovnian defectors- though for various reasons it seems to be doing only slightly better. Darkon Zuckerberg seems to be seeking more souls to sacrifice for some farfetched plan or another- like blowing up the demiplane in another escape attempt or popularizing tire-sized VR goggles. Meanwhile, a Falkovnian defector is attempting to setup a BlueDie on Tepestani shores. Only time will tell if it will survive or go the way of Super Happy Fun Land's now extinct blue bird.
okay so pixel art has been a hobby of mine for the past While. I started more actively practicing and all sometime in 2020/21. Over the last few years, I have improved and now I want to start to post stuff-- and tumblr seems like the place to start.
I mostly do pixel art for my D&D campaigns-- be it "start screens" like this one for a one-shot I did, VTT tokens, tiles/maps, and so on.
So here's to a return to tumblr! Welcome to my art dumping ground:)
Two of my friend's characters for a Ravenloft game!
