The image you see is a screenshot of a very old version of NBODE running a world with a particular seed.
This place actually looks significantly different in regular Beta 1.8. The general land shape is still the same, but there's supposed to be sand in there. Also Beta 1.8 in this location has less tall grass.
I guess removing annoying surface water pools in the beginning really made that much of a change.
