XVIII. The Moon - what is the most significant secret your character has discovered?
{Warning: Somewhat disturbing content.}
Dreams used to be a spectator’s sport for Safrona when she’d choose not to muddle them with wine, or cut them entirely off with a vial of Dreamless Sleep. Sometimes it was a scene of a thousand possibilities; she believed the one most of a Great Dark rising as a Kingdom or great city fell to another’s war, attempting to silence a wounded Azeroth and unite its warring people in a hivemind.
And somewhere, she understood the point of this dream, as all color seeped away into hungry, violent shadow. Azeroth was suffering, being bled dry, and most of the insects that covered her that she so loved were too involved in their own insignificancies to really care. At this rate Azeroth wasn’t getting any peace unless its people were rendered mindless or dead, for what did the mindless and dead have to fight over…?
Whether it was the Void itself slipping into her sleep, the billowing thoughts from the darkest part of her mind, or the bitter thought of a black soul she had Harvested come to breathe its vision into her relinquished mind, Safrona understood what the dream was getting at, the reason why the universe seemed to want to deaden Azeroth.
Not that she was ready to give up on it. A repetitive ‘prophecy’ that all possibly needed to prepare for, nothing that alarmed her when she herself could narrarate her own damn dreams, so many times she had seen them.
No, what worried her was when she could not forsee where her mind was taking her on some nights, when the dreams were the same but felt too different, a new approach, a new scene unfurling.
…when she felt a lack of control.
When her head rolled out onto the long-form dining table of her dream, the disorientation had Safrona groaning in her sleep. The haunting chime of laughter that came after sent a shiver down her spine. She felt the hand curl into her hair, pulled to set her unwieldy head upright on the serrated stump of her neck. A form there on the edge of memory was staring back at her with a knowing grin.
“You know what I find utterly, utterly amusing?” the lady of the past spoke to her now directly with all sweetness, as if they had known each other all their lives. She very slowly skewered the red, still-beating heart on her dinner plate with a fork, slicing elegantly into the other ventricle with a knife with all the normalcy of one cutting into a piece of baked chicken. “No matter how much you run away and try to forget, and no matter how much I never want to see you again, ‘Courier’, you keep coming back to me, like clockwork.”
As she slipped the slice of heart past her lips and chewed, the spectre’s lips grew a pinker, more lively hue, “Why do you think that is, exactly, madam? Hmmm? We both very well know this is a dream, but here we are?” Those pink lips had eaten up the bloody meal fairly quickly, and they were still hungry. The fork was turned on her helpless head there now on the table, and Safrona flinched in her sleep as the fork drove into her eye socket to plop out the flesh within.
“I think it’s because you KNOW…” the living ghost muttered with malice, lifting the bloody, void and fel-infused eye to her lips. “This…is where you belong. Doesn’t it? All you are…it belongs to ME.”
These were the dreams Safrona woke up from in a cold sweat, trembling like a leaf, in need of something to scrub away her mind from an unspoken and unwanted truth.
These were the dreams that had Safrona drinking at dawn.
