Talk about a song/band/lyric that has affected your life in some way.
This might be long. Imma go ahead and say all of Neru’s songs have fucked me up. One I’d like to talk about is Terror(ism). I found the song thanks to JubyPhonic’s wonderful English cover. The song shows two characters who were in other Neru videos. The songs they came from were really dark (Drowning in a Wave of Sadness (by Len) and I Want to Become a Kind Person (by Rin)). This song, however, had a much lighter tone. First, Yuu (the character from Kind Person) sung about how she’s confused and trapped. She is bullied and persecuted by those around her.
“I’m always singing out of tune-
No, screaming ‘til I’m blue and cry
To hear you think and say that all of it’s a lie.
You wouldn’t mind then if I fire away?”
Yuu breaks into the chorus which is about fighting back for your own sake. Even if she doesn’t win, she knows that she stood up for herself, and that she’s capable of fighting back. I’m a big fan of Neru’s analogies, so I really like how the song uses war to portray their catastrophic feelings. Terrorism is the war declared on them by their peers, so they fight back against it. Hanpen (Nami?) was a very depressed character from Drowning in a Wave of Sadness. He sings very cynically about how no matter what he does, he won’t be able to get away.
“Couldn’t leave or get away, running from fear in the crowd
All I heard was empty, letting terrorism out.
So they would leave me here to stay- No, I would run away from them
If it’s the only chance that I’ve got left.
And if you’re standing on a crumbling hill
Would you forgive?”
He also sings his chorus about fighting back. After the chorus, Yuu is seen reaching out to him. This goes into my favorite part of the song where Yuu sings really inspiring lyrics to Hanpen.
“So even if you’re broken up inside,
You gotta stand and fight
‘Cause it’s the only heart you’ve got and might’ve forgotten
that a light shines brightly, that’s what makes it life.

So, I’m a sappy butternugget, and those lines really got to me. As with many things, I found this song after losing all of my friends and self-destructing. It made me question what is selfish and what is a friend, helping form some of my philosophies today. I sing this song to myself because it reminds me what’s important. I need to fight for myself. The people who laugh at me are not friends. Even if I fail or make mistakes, I can continue. I’ve had fun debating with people over such philosophies (everyone likes to believe that they are selfless, tragic heroes), but this song really encouraged me to change who I am for better.
Sorry for the long speech. Once again, I get sappy. I recommend this song a lot (especially Juby’s cover). Yee.
I wrote this while I procrastinated an english essay without internet
yay fun

The familiar yet gentle tug on Hanpen’s sleeve when he slowed was quite comforting. The slight pressure on the fabric was a sign that the person he cared about most, shared the same if not a lesser feeling as he. Just the thought that the literal angel pulling him through the city to the downtown area’s café made his heart flutter.
Literally everything about Yuu was perfect. Her hair was silk cascading down her back, covering her left eye. Her eyes, although he has yet to see them, he was almost certain that their radiance put even the brightest star to shame. Her laugh was the sound of a cherub gently ringing a bell. Her kindness outshone everyone, although she has voiced on numerous occasions that she believed otherwise—he didn’t believe her.
“Come ooon, Hanpen! If you keep slowing down like a lazy ass we’ll never get to the café!”
Her words were enough motivation to quicken and maintain his pace, unconsciously falling into sync with Yuu.
Hanpen decided he didn’t need to see to admire everything about her.
Eventually the two light haired students reached the café and claimed their usual table, they came so often that all of the afternoon staff had memorized their orders. Not that either of the two minded. They both dreaded the thought of going home before sunset.
After receiving their drinks, Hanpen and Yuu made light small talk about school and teachers and assignments. The end of the year meant more pressure more work more stress for not only the students, but teachers and administrative as well. Regardless, the two still walked to the café together every afternoon.
After a rather amusing conversation of an in-school event, Yuu’s laughter died down earlier than it usually does when something funny is said. Hanpen frowns and tilts his head, confused.
“Yuu, is something wrong?”
The girl hastily responded with a reassuring , “No, no. Nothing’s wrong.”
She hesitated before continuing, “I have something rather important to ask you, Hanpen.”
Yuu wasn’t usually like this and Hanpen was starting to worry even more. Yuu wasn’t dying, was she?
“W…what is it?”
Hanpen could hear her messing with the hem of her skirt.
“You don’t… You don’t hate me, do you?”
Hanpen was not expecting this question.
“No, no. Of course not. Quite the opposite, really. Our classmates were not lying when they rudely proclaimed my love for you.”
Yuu sighed softly in relief and Hanpen could tell she relaxed physically.
“Good, good. I guess you wouldn’t mind if I maybe…” She stood up and walked around the table to stand behind Hanpen, “Did this?” Yuu gently turned his head with her hands and fully kissed him, both their faces visibly blushing.
After a moment, much too soon for the blindfolded student’s taste, Yuu pulled away. Both their pulses were beating at a quicker tempo than normal, small smiles gracing both of their pairs of lips.
Breathlessly, Yuu leans in and whispers a question to Hanpen, “Will you give me the honor of calling you my boyfriend?”
Hanpen choked. He had only had something like this happen in his dreams. Was he hearing correctly? Is he even awake? Regardless of the answers to his unspoken questions, he nodded, prompting a giggle and hug attack courtesy of his new girlfriend.
The warm feeling spreading from Hanpen’s chest made him realize something. He was no longer drowning in his waves of sadness. Yuu was the support he needed to keep his head above water. She was his incredibly kind life-preserving device and he never wanted to let go.
