mad libs, but instead of actual stories written specifically for mad libs, they use those fill-in-the-blank questions that are on quizzes and tests sometimes.

Okay, I know everyone makes mistakes, but...

I’m looking through old academic papers of mine, school work, old tests, notes, that kind of stuff. I stumble upon a pamphlet/folder from The Princeton Review. It probably came with my PSAT. But here’s something interesting.

See a problem? (The answer is E by the way.) I’ll give you a hint. Discover is a verb. Discovery is a noun. It should be “...details of the discovery...” If that was a question on the SAT I would have stood up and left. Believe me, I know standardized tests can have weird questions like that pineapple thing from ages ago (not as hard as it seems but still a garbage reading comprehension test.) But the above sample question was only one of TWO questions on the pamphlet. Just two. And nobody proofread them. And the error is so glaring that I stumbled several times trying to see “wait, no, is this wrong?” And yes. It is wrong.  I get that everyone makes mistakes. But this is meant to be a TEST QUESTION. Way to promote anxiety in your students: fuck up your grammar so badly that the kids reading it waste 2 extra minutes of precious test time trying to decipher what the hell you meant. Anyway, I’m past the point in my life where I need to be mad about this but BOY HOWDY I should have been madder back when I was a teen.  Still, I can laugh about it now. Not everyone can be perfect all the time but BOY they should have tried a little harder to be perfect here where it MATTERS.
