Happy Arbor Day! 🌲 🌳 🌴 What would we do without trees... from absorbing atmospheric carbon dioxide, providing wildlife habitat, wind breaks, erosion control, water filtration, building materials, fuel, food, shade, natural beauty, and more... thank you, trees! 🌲 Trees are the bones of the Garden—everything starts with the trees. The Garden is home to so many kinds of trees including the tallest. We’ve got the tallest conifer, tallest flowering tree, and tallest palm tree! The California native coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) is well known as the tallest of all trees with the tallest recorded specimen at 380 feet tall! 🌸🌳 The tallest flowering tree (angiosperm) is the mountain ash (Eucalyptus regnans) that hails from the cool temperate rain forests of Australia and Tasmania with the tallest recorded specimen is 330 feet tall! 🌴 The tallest palm tree (and tallest monocot) is the Andean wax palm (Ceroxylon quindiuense) which is found in the highlands of Peru and Columbia with the tallest specimen recorded at 200 feet tall! 🌲 Thank You Trees! And in a cheerful little holiday interlude... Tonight and tomorrow are Tu B'Shevat, best known as "The Jewish Arbor Day", also called Rosh Hashanah La'Ilanot or The New Year of the Trees. While it dates back to Biblical times, in modern day Israel, Tu B'Shevat is celebrated as a day of ecological awareness, which for young children means emphasising everything from recycling programs to an appreciation of "the gifts the trees give us"--usually through tasting yummy new fruits. There are lots of great books about Tu B'Shevat, but one of my personal favourites for an early introduction is "Thank You, Trees!" (2013), a beautifully bright little board book by Gail Langer Karwoski and Marilyn E. Gootman, illustrated by Kristen Balouch. These are the great #trees that make the #littleyellowflowerblossoms 🌳these trees are home to #squirrels 🐿 and sometimes #redtailhawks. A canopy of leaves cover the parking lot and the shadows from it are really neat.
