He clearly never learned how to share his toys and it’s a damn shame because neither did she. Bellatrix can’t remember having ever crossed him in any way besides having had the audacity to marry his brother, and if he wants to resent her for it she supposes there’s not much she can do to change that. She’s certainly tried. She’s always treated him better than most other people ( because cool indifference is borderline kindness in her eyes ) and can still claim to prefer him over the likes of Lucius, but none of it has ever made a difference to him. She senses she’s still nothing more than an intrusion in his life, no matter how many false gestures of “friendliness” he directs her way, and she’ll gladly pay him back in kind. He’s nothing short of an irritant to her now.
Perhaps she’d truly wanted him to like her when she first moved in, just for the sake of not feeling so alone in a new place far from home, and the fact that he never learned to fueled the rivalry on her end.
For what it’s worth, Bellatrix usually doesn’t allow her personal feelings for Rabastan to interfere with how she treats him. They’ve reached a tense stalemate, a never ending cycle of pretenses and politeness for what she assumes to be Rodolphus’ sake. She doesn’t hate Rabastan. She finds him persistently annoying, yes, but she doesn’t wish any ill on him ( usually ) and doesn’t necessarily want him gone either ( usually ). He’s smart, talented, witty, and an infinitely lighter presence than his brother, though she doesn’t appreciate it nearly as much as she once used to. She sees great potential in him. The one feeling that overpowers all others, however, is how much he unnerves her. He’s just so good at faking every aspect of their relationship that at times she has to wonder just how deep his hatred for her runs - and how far he’d be willing to go to get rid of her.
