Hi Gypsin. I am a huge fan of your fantastic work, The Halfbreeds Wife. I can't tell you how many times I've reread it, and enjoyed it, and found inspiration from all the cute waffy-ness. I wanted to ask if you've ever read another fanfiction in which Kagome goes a little further back in time to meet Inuyasha before he met Kikyo, because I can't help but think about a what-if scenario, in which Kagome and her big heart was born in Kikyo's place and circumstances instead.

I havenโt really READ a whole lot of Inuyasha fics recently. Iโm mostly too caught up in writing them. (Iโm planning on going on an Inuyasha reading binge soon though, to be honest, its long overdue, especially if ย I want to keep up with @mustardyellowsunshine on the podcast X.X)ย
So I canโt really recommend any fics that are similar to mine even though Iโm sure theyโre out there. (Maybe someone else knows some?)ย
I do have some stuff I can tell you about THBW though! :)ย
Itโs an AU where the Shikon jewel does not exist and Kagome was born in the feudal era instead of Kikyo. I did have to tweak some things about the situation/circumstances to help maintain everyoneโs key personality traits though.ย ย
1 she has basically the same family she did in canon. (Just a feudal version)
2 the people around Kagome rarely bring up demons (but her mother claims to have made friends with a kitsune once.)
3 Kagomeโs powers were sealed by something other than the Shikon jewel.
4 The location is different. Thus changing the flow of (some) events.
Inuyasha has not met Kikyo. Heโs meeting Kagome instead. But it takes a lot of the creative license out of something if I try to just switch Kikyo for Kagome and keep all the canon events thereafter intact. (Not to mention it would be difficult and boring)ย
There are some personality changes on Inuyashaโs part too because (in theory) He was more interested in forming ย a romantic relationship with someone before Kikyo supposedly betrayed him, So the amount of time it takes for him to fall in love will likely be as short for Kagome in this fic as it was with Kikyo in canon. (Heโs still awkward and insecure about affection though.)
I did it this way because theoretically, the situations one endures in life are what make us who we are. Kikyo and Kagome are not that unlike each other at their core. They both want to do the right thing and help people and they both love their families and Inuyasha. (in their own ways)
Kikyo (as far as we know) grew up with little to no parental contact, basically raised her little sister, was put through priestess training from a young age, and then burdened with the protection of the jewel of four souls and thus is very independent, proud and strong. She also has reason to distrust and even hate demons. These things make her โKikyoโ
Kagome grew up in a close and loving family environment, she has a little brother and her mother is perfectly capable of raising him with little help from Kagome. Her powers have gone unnoticed/hidden for most of her life and she has little training with the priestess arts. She is somewhat dependent on others emotionally and physically as she was not taught to protect herself. she has always been protected. She has had no prior contact with demons and no reason to dislike ones who claim to be peaceful. ย These things make her 'Kagome'ย
They share the same soul but are very different people with very different circumstances. ย And I tried to reflect those circumstances and their effects in THBW. It was a tricky balance to keep Kagomeโs personality as canon as possible.ย
