A/N: This was originally written as an entry to one of @itsbuckysworld challenges in 2k19 and based on the prompt Who drank my last lemonade?! Hey so, like, you remember you love me? And we are married?. Sadly it got lost in all my other works, but now I’ve found it years later and thought I could publish it, because why not.
If it hadn't been for the swimming pool Tony owned, together with the air-con blasting, the warmth across the state would've been unbearable. It was July, one of the months the weather should be the best, but you believed that mother earth forgot to turn the heat off. It was many years since it had been this warm.
You glanced towards the sun, the glasses you wore protecting from blinding you. "I wasn't meant for the heat", you grumbled as you collected the hair which stuck to your back, holding it in the nape of your neck instead.
"Stop complaining, you'll moan about the snow when it comes too", you opened your eyes to shoot a glare at the redhead resting beside you on the lounger, basking in the sun which made her red hair seem to glow.
"I can complain about both if I want", you watched as she opens her eyes, but not before shielding them. She propped herself up with the other arm while she looked up at you.
"I know you hate the heat, but at least you're happy you can tease the dear husband of yours in broad daylight", you chuckled to her words, a similar sound escaping her at the same time as well.
She was right about that, it wasn't many times you could pull out the bikini you now wore while being around the team. A minimal black piece, which you argued with Steve that you needed to wear, as the rest already been used on other warm days and you needed to work on the tan. In reality, you just wanted to rile him up.
"Can't deny that one", you giggled mischievously, while glancing around the pool area. Every Avenger stood or sat around it, most lightly clothed in swimwear. Tony had, perhaps unbeknownst to most, a pool decorating one of the balconies in his tower. The area was mostly used on days like this, sunny and warm.
Your gaze stopped regarding the place once spotting Steve, the hair of his shining like a beacon. It was remarkably lighter this time around the year, almost bordering to white.
He stood with Bucky and Sam, the trio sipping a beer each as they talked and laughed together. Steve was the only one of them wearing a linen shirt, although fully unbuttoned. You thought of his modesty as cute, but you didn't understand how he couldn't sweat to death. The whole morning you'd switched between the shadow and sun, no matter where you were sweat dripped down your temple.
"Although he seems to do a quite good job himself", you hastily glanced from Steve to Nat who now also looked at him.
"Hey, keep your eyes off my man", you swatted down her shielding hand so she wouldn't be able to continue to look.
"Well I need to see what you ogle at all the time", she laughed and pushed away your hand as she laid down again. You shook your head at her, not believing what she said.
Yes, you eyed him up, had done even before you were married. At that thought, you looked down on the ring on your finger. It was sleek, very much like the one adorning his ring finger. Smiling at the memory, you twiddled with the piece of jewellery, thinking back to when he had offered it to you. You'd never seen him as nervous as when he pulled out the box in his apartment in Brooklyn. Sighing happily, you closed your eyes behind your glasses and leant back in the lounger.
The rolling warmth from the sun and the occasional passing clouds coldness was what you felt for some time. You relished in the feeling, trying not to care about the sweat building in the nape your neck and on the places where your skin met the towel under you.
Then suddenly you felt a shadow pass you and you opened your eyes to see it was Steve, who scanned over your appearance. You could almost feel as clearly as the sun licked your skin when his eyes dragged over you.
By not showing you noticed his lingering eyes, it would be impossible for him to know, so you didn't, at least not until he looked away. You saw the tick in his jaw and how he set his hair in place by an unnecessary harsh tug, while he continued to walk behind Sam over to the table with drinks.
"Why are you looking so smug?" Looking up you saw Tony lean on the top of your lounger. He'd pushed the sunglasses he wore to the top of his head when now standing in the shadow of the parasol above you. Mimicking him, you placed yours on top of your head as well.
"Nothing special" You mused, restraining yourself from looking at your man, knowing if you did he would be fully able to see it without your coverage.
"Huh, so that's how it is", he hummed. You saw how he switched to look from you to somewhere else. "It's that why Mr Spangles over there seems to be so bothered", you bit back a smirk, but you still heard a laugh from beside you.
"They've been eyeing each other as if they weren't already married", Tony chuckled at Nat's statement while rounding the back of your lounger, only to go in between them instead. As he stood at the end of your seat, he made a shooing motion for you to move your legs. Crossing them at your ankle, you made room for the billionaire to sit down. However all the while you felt someones nagging gaze on you and once glancing over Tony's shoulder, you found the culprit.
Steve's blue eyes immediately met yours, from the new position on the short side of the pool, one they'd wandered to after getting their drinks. This made him stand closer than initially, thus his raised brow didn't go unnoticed. You sent a smile his way, swatching to look back at Tony, still able to see him look at you in your peripheral.
"Well if that's how they been looking at each other, I understand what you mean", he nodded towards you. The stare that you saw bore into the back of the man sitting with you almost made you laugh at Steve. "And don't fret over your husband, he has nothing to fear", the last part of the sentence, which was directed to Steve, he said much louder. You knew the one it was directed towards heard it, as the blonde man swiftly looked away. At his clear display of eavesdropping, you couldn't contain your laughter.
"The protectiveness he has over you almost makes you compete with Bucky", Tony continued and even tough you laughed so much small tears formed, you felt the need to say something.
"Oh don't say that, Bucky dearest will always be his number one", this made both Nat and Tony burst out in laughter, now both Steve and Bucky looked over towards you. To which the three of you silenced yourself and eased into a normal conversation.
What in the end pulled you from the conversation with Tony, was your thirst. It felt like walking through Sahara as you wandered over to the portable freezer said billionaire put on the terrace to facilitate the need for cold drinks. One you didn't pass up on as you at the beginning of the day did put a few lemonades in it.
Arriving upon the case, you opened the lid, the cold air coming from the container welcoming. You searched through it, knowing you would have one drink left somewhere.
To a beginning you believed that it just slipped further down in the sea of bottles and ice, but when you'd rummage tough the box long enough for the tips of your fingers to feel like icicles you pulled out your hand. Slightly irritated you put on the lid again and turned around.
"Who drank my last lemonade?!" Your raised voice pulled most of the Avenger's eyes towards you, but you hadn't meant to exclaim it like that.
Even though the evident irritation in your voice, no one answered, neither having a sheepish look on them which told you they were the culprit. That was until you met the blue eyes you fell in love with. In his hand, Steve held the bottle of your drink, near-empty at that. You'd left your sunglasses at the side table beside your seat, now you were happy for it. Raising a brow, you began walking towards him with. A stressed expression came over his face the closer you got, but he didn't look away from your gaze.
"Hey so, like, you remember you love me? And we're married?" You needed to contain a smile when he asked the questions, as well your voice when you finally answered him mere feet away from him.
"I do, don't worry otherwise I wouldn't do this", you chuckled and his brows furrowed for a second before they shot up in surprise. When you were close enough, you jumped, up and towards him. Instinctively he caught you, hands beneath your bottom as you encircled his neck. The momentum you got from the leap was enough to make him stumble back. The last things you saw before crashing into the pool was the shocked expression on his face.
As you broke the surface tension water splashed everywhere and you fruitlessly tried watching him through the water that engulfed the two of you. When the water got too uncomfortable to continue looking through, you closed your eyes. In the same instance, you felt Steves's hands slowly lose their grip until they fully let go of you.
Now free from his embrace, you kicked in the water to get to the surface. You hadn't fallen too deep, so after just a few second, you reached the surface, where laughter met your ears.
Blinking to get away the excess water from your eyes, you felt another body popping up above the surface beside you. When your vision was clear enough, you turned, still needing to keep yourself afloat by treading in the water. There you saw Steve, his blonde hair wet and plastered to his head, the shirt he wore in the same state. Laughing at his appearance made him look at you, the shocked expression still visible.
"That's what you get when you take my drink", you pointed out, another bell of laughter sounding from around you and the man opposite you shook his head.
"Good then I know in the future", he stated and dragged a hand through his hair, making it stand up in all kinds of direction. When his eyes met yours once again, yours widened and hurridly you tried swimming to the edge. You couldn't possibly even take one stroke before he pulled you against him. Instinctively you wrapped your legs around his waist, not needing to keep yourself afloat as he was tall enough to stand on the bottom.
"But this is what I do when someone, by the likes of you, unexpectedly pushes me into a pool", as your arms already were around his neck, it wasn't fair for him to lean in and kiss you. You hummed happily against his mouth as you still could taste the sweetly sour lemonade on his lips.
"Get a room you two!" You heard a deep voice behind your call and broke away from Steve to look over your shoulder. Bucky stood with a smirk, on the same spot he did before your attack. A laugh escaped you when you noted the bottle he held in his hand.
"Give us some room jerk", you heard Steve call but didn't turn around to see the matching smirk he sported.
"Well others also want to enjoy the pool and you have an awfully nice room inside the tower just so you know", you continued to laugh as you felt a blush, more than the sun already created, warm your cheeks.
"Then I'll take my wife and we'll retreat there", you felt Steve beginning to move through the water and you twirled around to watch him. A smile adorned his lips, yet from your close proximity, you noticed something resembling desire in his eye.
"Don't I have a say in it?" You questioned him. A devilish smirk quickly covered his lips as he leaned in closer to you and whispered in your ear.
"I don't think you will, not in a few minutes".
"Is that a promise, Captain?" You bit your lip at the way his eyes visibly darkened at the title and the way pulled closer to his chest. The feeling of his warm skin contrasting against yours sent a shiver down your spine, one who continued even further when he answered by kissing the spot beneath your ear and whispering.

A/N: So, like... this chapter wasn’t meant to become so long but it did anyways. hehe, sorry for that one. And also, I decided that this, now after starting to write it, that it will be (at least) five chapters rather than the four I planned it to be. SERIES MASTERLIST
"We're here, Miss", you looked up at your chauffeur, who already was looking back at you in the rearview mirror.
You'd been so in your own headspace the whole drive here, to where you and Steven would meet, that you hadn't noticed you arrived. There was definitely a reason, which was that you'd done everything from flicking through the complete portfolio, now including the newest document as well, that T'Challa and Shuri had put together for you about the latest Canine boss. Even your contract you'd looked over once more. Perhaps you could call it a compulsive habit of yours rather than simple caution, seeing how it always was something you felt you needed to do, even though neither of the current documents would reveal any new fact or fault.
Seemingly it was something Mr Davon, which your chauffeur's name was, had noticed regarding how he hadn't engaged in the usual conversation the two of you commonly partook in. And by how he now looked knowingly at you, confirmed it.
"Thank you, Davon", you nodded to the grey-haired man in the front seat for notifying you that you'd arrived at the club. The man in question simply smiled before opening his door and stepped out.
Despite that you insisted on doing it yourself, you knew the usual custom of him walking around the car to open the door for you would follow his exit from the vehicle. And the moment you finished gathering the files you'd read and put them into your handbag, the sound of someone unlocking your door came.
As the door swung open, you instantly heard the sound and low thumping of music, and as soon as your eyes pulled from the car's interior to instead look outside, you were met by the lazy radiance of neon. Unconsciously, you felt your nose scrunch at the scene.
Just because this property laid in one of the few neutral territories in New York didn't mean you hadn't already scouted the site. It may be no dingy and low life hood club, the pay to enter price that was quite expensive taking care of that problem. Thus, most of those coming here weren't ordinary people. It was those for which money wasn't a problem or had enough connections to be let inside. Consequently, there was no line of people outside the entrance. Still, you loathed the idea of meeting Brooklyn's Golden boy here.
Nevertheless, you needed to admit it was better than the place Steven originally had suggested, which for a fact had been in the heart of Brooklyn. It had been a hard no to enter his grounds for a conference. The same the opposite way. That was you now found yourself in the Northern part of Queens.
"Everything alright, Miss?" Your eyes snapped to Davon, who expectantly looked over the top of the door. Patiently waiting for you to get out of the car.
"Always", you flaunted a lighthearted smile, able to do so because of the adrenaline that slowly started to settle in. It always happened before each crucial business meeting. Nothing new. Hence, you did nothing but take a deep breath to contain yourself slightly as you stepped out of the car.
There hadn't been a need for a jacket when you left your office. And though the evening air was slightly colder and served a gentle breeze, the late June wheater could still be deemed warm. Therefore, your skin didn't prickle, nor did you feel chilly, while watching one of your trusted guards, which just now had talked with the bouncer, walk towards you.
"What did he say?" You asked the big man stopping in front of you. Joshua, your most entrusted bodyguard since day one, looked dapper in the darker clothes he wore. Most of the time, he wore opaque colours. Goes with the job, the brunette always says. But, the attire itself was usually laid-back, now though he didn't wear a t-shirt or jeans. Instead, the suit you'd gifted him.
"Said that the Canines been here for the last hour", your eyebrows raised at that. You may regard punctuality as one of the keys to success. As well as to get people to view you as prepared rather than tardy. But one hour ahead of the scheduled time? That wasn't punctuality. It was impatience. Steven thought this, or rather his, deal would be done and over with swiftly, it seemed.
"Very well", you opted to say, hearing the car door close behind you when you took a few steps forward.
"I wish you good luck, Miss", you looked over your shoulder, finding Mr Davon having retaken his position by the driver's door, a kind smile on his lips. The man always was polite and wished you a favourable outcome for each meeting you went to.
"I assure you when we see each other next time, that good luck will certainly have been what ensured me my deal", you responded, earning an amused chuckle from Davon.
"I sure hope so. I'll be waiting with bated breath until you come back and tell me the good news", your smile turned a little more genuine towards the man as you nodded at him a final time before following Joshua towards the club's entrance.
Your heels clicked as you moved forwards over the pavement. Even when you stepped into the marbled and luxuriously decorated foyer, did the sound echo.
There was no question that this club wasn't for everyone. If not noticeable from the entrance hall you walked through - the personnel working there simply throwing glances your way before quickly looking away - it was apparent by the nature of the club. The clean, near shining from how polished it was, environment, along with the absence of the pungent and soured smell of alcohol, served as a constant reminder.
And though the marbled floor didn't turn into a sticky carpet when Joshua lead you further in, preferably a dark tiled floor, it became clear you closed in on the actual club part of the building. The sound of your heels faded as the music increased. Quite promptly, you started to feel the bass vibrate through the floor. Likewise, could you make out the lyrics of the songs.
Past your bodyguard, you saw how the dimmed lighting you walked through were replaced by those of neons. They reflected off the floor, the polished metal features on counters and the leatherlike seatings you spotted further ahead.
Your eyes, however, were pulled from trying to observe the area ahead to Joshua when he glanced over his shoulder. It was his silent way, regarding how the music neared the louder decibel, of asking you if everything still felt fine. Regardless that you often went with his gut-feeling if a situation was safe or not, Joshua always checked with you. Chiefly, because he knew your instinct was as good as his. You'd kept yourself alive as much as he had, to be honest.
And regarding how you didn't felt anything was off at the moment, you curtly nodded to ensure him to continue. This was a parley, after all. And, on top of that, it was pure commons sense to not draw weapons on neutral grounds. Hence, no need to worry. Yet.
When once more walking forwards, you now entered the main space.
Immidetly you regarded the multiple bar counters, the dancefloor and the tables, including the people located at those places. Albeit the light was dim and the pink, blue and purple neons contorted the colours of clothes, you spotted no dress under the price tag of a couple of thousand dollars nor any suit. You even guessed the multiple glasses filled with drinks scored as ridiculously high.
Although, it wasn't to discern those things you surveyed the room. It was to find allies and foes. The former was easier. Regarding how you not only knew who your own women along the panthers were, but also because they were the sole ones meeting your gaze as your eyes roamed the space. The latter, though, was trickier. Not only because men, already surrounded by one or multiple women, lingered their eyes over you. Even a few ladies did the same thing. More so due to the fact foes were meant to blend in.
"One in the right corner, standing with the blonde. Another two, respectively sitting with the pal in a white shirt and lounging at the bar".
You'd noticed Joshua had fallen into your step, so he preferably walked alongside you then a step ahead. Although, you hadn't felt how he dipped his head, for others rather insignificantly, but which for you enabled to hear his voice as he spoke. It was an efficient way to let him communicate with you without others noticing. And though he hadn't explained what he informed you about, it was enough for you to know.
One more time, you dragged your eyes across the room, albeit not stopping significantly longer on the people the man beside you'd pointed out. Merely to hide the fact you knew, notwithstanding the conversations they were having with their company, most of their attention was on you.
"The rest?" You looked away from the scene you'd lingered by to instead look to your side. The brunette beside you had still his head tipped slightly towards you to hear if you said anything, even if his gaze was set straight forward.
"I believe they're ahead, somewhat of an equal amount watching the corridor and him", the swift action of indicating forwards made your eyes trail from Joshua's profile to look forth.
The two of you had almost wandered half the length of the circular room and up a couple of stairs, but it seemed you wouldn't need to do a whole lap to reach the end, only climb up the last fleet of steps to the uppermost part of the room. Thus now, not more than ten or so feet before you, there was an opening in the wall.
It looked like the beginning of a corridor, one which had two men stationed by it. Even though you instantly saw they must belong to Steven's troupe, the way they lounged at the hallway entrance made them look more like fellows wanting to distance themselves from the main room of the party than bodyguards. However, the way their conversation died and eyes instantly snapped to watch you when you came closer gave them away for anyone who may have looked.
Joshua now stepped in front of you, seemingly holding a brief and tense dialogue with the two men. The three of them were all the same build, tall and sturdy. Although, you didn't feel small among them. Nor did you when Joshua motioned for you to follow him in between the two chaps.
You held your head high, knowing how much these guys ever stared at you with a burning rivalry that you never would fight them. You would fight their boss.
When you headed down the corridor, with no doors adorning the walls, you could hear multiple voices, possibly one which belonged to Steven, resound lowly from the open entrance at the end.
You supposed something adorned the walls, or they'd simply been built in such a way that the further you progressed, the more they blocked the sound of music. Otherwise, you wouldn't have heard the merry laughs or chatter, nor the return of the click of your heels, when you neared the door standing ajar.
You began to smell a sweet scent as Joshua stopped in the doorway to the room. Thus, you nearly concentrated more on the smell than the way the room fell quiet. Lucky for you, you'd already encountered the aroma. Otherwise, you would've been bothered by not being able to place it.
It wasn't the aroma of a women's perfume nor food. You knew what it was. The godfathers always offered you one of the rolled tobacco's when visiting. And, the moment your dark-haired bodyguard stepped to the side to let you step over the threshold of the room, you immediately found a golden casket, opened and displaying the finest of cigars, standing on the edge of the table inside. However, your eyes didn't linger there for long. Instead, they trailed to the man you were about to meet, who was one of many already watching you, yet the sole one sitting down and smoking a cigar.
Steven Grant Rogers.
You almost slipped and showed how taken aback you were, not because of the dominating aura exuding from the man in the leather armchair, such things you were plenty used to. But no, it was as of a fact his looks.
He was young, much younger than you'd thought. If to decide by his appearance, Steven must've been born close after his father's death. You would never have guessed when knowing of the age his father passed and concerning how he operated his empire and the rivalry against you. From this, the man definitely fitted the older generation. But no, it seemed he apparently didn't belong there.
"Nice to finally have a face for the man that's been testing my patience lately", you broke the silence that had covered the room like a lid. Though you awaited the same reaction you would've had to such a comment - which would've been nothing more than a smile regarding how you couldn't bother to display any prominent reply - Steven did the complete opposite.
He chuckled, the sound a deep rumble of amusement. You almost wondered if his voice would be equally as low or if it all was a consequence of smoking the cigar he for the moment held limply between his finger. Apparently, you would get an answer to that quicker than you imagined. And the answer was his voice was like that of molasses, deep and rich.
"I took the liberty to prepare a drink for you", the Canine boss motioned, with a nod, towards the identical leather armchair on the opposite side of the table and the small stand beside it. You spotted the same crystal glass you had at home resting upon it, with a deep amber liquid in it. Whiskey. "Would you have preferred on the rocks?"
Your eyes tracked back to Steven, who currently reached for his own glass. Which similar to yours stood on the small table beside his seat. He made the small move without averting his gaze from you.
"I actually prefer it neat", he cocked his head as you said this.
His hair was not cut short or trimmed neatly like all those men before him. Instead, it reached the nape of his neck. No pomade or other product kept it out of his face. It simply looked like he'd ran his hands through it once and for some magical reason, it had stayed like that without looking greasy. But it was because he seemingly hadn't put any product in that one of the strands, shifting from brown to dark blonde, had fallen slightly out of order when he'd moved his head. Nevertheless, seeing as it had done nothing but come to rest against his cheekbone, Steven paid it no attention.
"What suggests it's neat?" This time, you cocked your head.
"I simply presumed you didn't take yours any other way", as you stated this, a smile began to ghost the man's lip.
"Be my guest, then", Steven replied, raising a hand to gesture towards the empty armchair opposite him.
You simply smiled at the invitation, walking forwards with back straight and head held high, no matter you were the sole one making a sound in the room and all the eyes were on you. Even as you sat down in the leather chair, you didn't wince at how the material groaned when finally being forced to change its state of unoccupied.
To be sitting opposite the man that you for days had prepared to meet was totally different than what you'd expected. Not only because you awaited an older, a much older heir of the Canine Empire, also because the man now watching you with blue eyes that pierced your stare back evoked a challenge.
You understood why Shuri thought this would be interesting now, even though you still found this whole matter nothing but bothersome. Steven could possibly be the sole person to actually put up a hurdle for you.
"What do you say, should we let our fellow companions leave so we can start?" Even though the man had stated it as a question, he waved his fingers directly afterwards, dismissing his guards as if it had been a command for you to follow. And therefore, you simply leaned further into the back of the leather seat, one leg hooking over the other. Making your heeled shoe relaxed in the air.
You would not follow his command that easy.
"Not that clever to send out your guards before the opposing part agrees", you regarded how your words made one of Steven's bodyguards stop on the threshold out of the room. The brunette with shoulder-length hair didn't stay there for long, though, concerning how his boss's minimal nod served as enough of command to continue out.
"Concerning this is a parley, I doubt you would dare kill me", there was a mockery in his voice that you disliked, despite your reasoning earlier had been the same.
"Doubt it", his eyes narrowed when you said this. Moreover, he also deposited both his glass of whiskey and his cigar in its hold. The smoke from the rolled tobacco whirled up in a thin line from the table. Instead, then a cloud from his lips as previously.
"I know you don't like to get your hands dirty", Steven said, the hand which had rested on the armrest coming to stroke his bearded jaw. Despite the facial hair, you knew there laid a sharp edge underneath it, separating his throat and face. Hence, his beard followed that line with an undeceiving definition. "So why do I own the pleasure?"
"I never said I would be the one pulling the trigger", even if I dreamt to, you thought to yourself as you looked back at Joshua. Ever the guard he was, his eyes only momentarily shifted from the mob boss facing you to meet your glance before he vigilantly went back to observing Steven. You looked back at the Canine whose eyes seemingly had trailed to watch your bodyguard the same instance you had but by now snapped back to you. "And not even you, as the parasite that you are, deserves a bullet coming from my gun".
Instantly you saw the tick enter Steven's jaw when he clenched it. You very well knew that your choice of word for him would push his buttons. Like every last godfather, he was a prideful man. And like you'd played them like strings ever since reaching the top, so you would do to the man in front of you. That was why you raised your hand from tapping on the armrest of your seat.
You heard the move Joshua did at your action, even hinted at it in your peripheral. Although, instead of concentrating on the gun that he'd unholstered and pointed Steven's way, your eyes stayed on the later mentioned man.
Presumably, the mob boss was staring down the barrel of the gun. But there was no frown etched upon his forehead, displaying a worry. Nor were there any tenseness in his body as he languidly sank further back in the armchair, legs splayed wide and arms resting on top of the armrest.
Steven slowly turned then, from watching the gun aimed at him, to meet your gaze.
"Do it. You'll just get all my allies over you".
"Let them come. I'll win. After all, you requested this meeting when you knew you were about to lose", another jab at Steven's pride, one he took personally this time, you saw it by the glint entering his eyes. But, rather than putting him out of his misery and ridding yourself of a thorn in your side. You dropped your hand completely rather than flick your index and long finger down, which was the signal to shoot.
"But, seeing as I'm already humble enough to give you the chance to meet me rather than grinding you to dust, I'll continue on that track for the moment", you hummed while you heard Joshua sheath his gun again.
"How grateful I am", the stinge of terseness was evident in Steven's voice as he spoke, but you paid it no mind, just gave him the slight raise of your eyebrows as if to convey a silent 'as you should'. "And now the guard, so we can start".
You'd gotten your point across to him. Therefore, you didn't hesitate to order Joshua to wait outside during the negotiation this time.
"Are you...", you didn't let the brunette finish his sentence before you shot him a look, which was enough for Joshua to understand you were indeed sure. You followed the back of your trusted guard, who trailed the same path as Steven's had a few minutes prior. And not until he disappeared and instead gave the view of a now-closed door did you redirect your eyes back to the Canine boss.
For some reason, it felt like it got lighter in the room, not simply as in the heavy silence of multiple added presences. More so that the lamps, not the same as the neon ones outside, shone brighter. Perhaps, it was because only you and Steven were left, giving it a vaster opportunity to spread.
It made you remark and notice even further details about the mob boss. Not only did it lighten his eyes, but it also made the shifting of brown and dark blonde locks contrast considerably with what he wore.
You didn't talk about a slightly too large suit, which you often refrained from remarking how ill-fitted they were to the godfathers, seeing as they were the sole ones wearing them. No, Steven... you knew he'd chosen to wear what he did to make an impression. Why else was there any need for a three-piece suit, all in black on top of that? Maybe the same reason as you'd chosen your attire, power. He wanted to show he was the top dog. Only, he was forgetting that if he were no bear, the felines were amongst the apex predators, no canine in sight.
For the passing moments, neither of you said anything, simply sat there watching each other. Observing each other.
He was a man fit for the role of a mob boss. Thus Steven had that aura one simply possessed or not. He evokes the need to be respected, to be feared. Therefore, you guessed leading came naturally for him. And that his physics -which you discerned to be great, by the how he almost dwarfed the armchair he sat in- only was a measurement to further establish his status as alpha.
In other words, he was the one who your eyes would draw to first when stepping into a room and also the last when bidding goodbye.
"Are you impatient?" Your jaws clenched when the canine boss broke the silence saying this. As well did your nails, which had been rapping against the leathered armrest, stop when he tipped his head in such way he told you he noticed the movement.
"I am not you, Steven", you retorted, which simply made the corner of his mouth quirk upwards. You raised a brow at his reaction. The amount of amusement and overall cockiness he returned your comments with steadily made you, despite what you said, rather impatient to get this over with. Yet, it seemed Steven had no hurry whatsoever now when you were waiting for him to begin.
He looked away from you, the smirk tugging in the corner of his lips remaining there as he reached for the whiskey glass he previously had put down. Your gaze, however, didn't stray from the man opposite you. Consequently, making your eyes trail his profile while he took a sip of the alcohol, savouring the taste by the looks of it.
When he lowered the glass, swirling its contents gently, his gaze found yours. He didn't remark how your eyes never ventured from him and around the room to inspect it further, not really that it was much to see.
"Call me Steve", he said, which made your eyebrows lift. Either he offered you a nickname, or it was just what most called him. Still, both were unusual seeing the setting the two of you were in. "And to sate your wonder why I ain't starting this meeting, we'll begin as soon as one last member joins us", you felt a tenseness stiffen your body when Steven, Steve, so nonchalantly had told you this. You may have underestimated the canine boss somewhat. Because seemingly, he was blatantly good at reading people. Perhaps that was why you compelled your voice to sound even more indifferent than before when responding.
"Thought you said this was a private affair".
"Oh, it is, our entertainment won't hear a thing", not even before you could think that you feared the worst from his statement did the sound of a door opening catch your attention.
You noticed in your peripheral how this time it was your turn to be the single one averting your eyes, concerning how you felt Steve continued observing you when you looked away from him. Though you despised the equal amount of curiosity and caution that had made you look towards the entrance at the moment, it was done and you couldn't more than proceed to look at the person now entering the room.
It was not any sort of guard, concerning how the man entering wasn't of the same build as either Joshua, or any of Steve's men. On top of that, he seemed incredibly timid, not only by how silently he tried closing the door behind him but also by the hurried steps he approached the end of your table with.
"Mr Rogers", the man nodded at the mob boss when close enough. "Miss Y/L/N", he quickly repeated the greeting your way while completely stopping at the end of the table. "I'll just prepare the set-up for you and..."
"Good", Steve answered before the man finished, effectively cutting him off. You felt the side of your nose twitch by the dark blonde man's blunt way of stopping the club worker from talking. Steve certainly lived up to his reputation of doing as he pleased with no regard for others.
You probably would've huffed if you didn't already know the Canine boss would understand why. And, to be honest, you tried reducing the number of remarks leaving him, concerning how the meeting hadn't even started and you were fed up with his persona already.
So, instead of commenting on Steve's attitude, you watched the man who had entered the room put up a metal case on the table.
You hadn't noticed it earlier, even though the crate, made of aluminium, was quite eye-catching. But now, when you had, you knew before it was opened and revealed rows and rows of tokens as well as a set of cards that it had been a poker set.
This time, you couldn't help but cock an eyebrow, unimpressed by Steve's attempt of entertainment. Maybe you were more old school than you thought, seeing how the Canine boss kept surprising you with his way of handling a conference.
"Poker?" You questioned out loud when swiftly glancing up at Steve, who, while you looked away, had reached for his cigar, puffing on it slightly.
"Hope you know how to play", he said amusedly, blowing out the lungful of smoke he inhaled right before answering you. It travelled across the table but evaporated before reaching you, albeit the sweet scent still did.
You refrained from answering him. Simply settled on switching which leg crossed which, while grasping the whiskey glass.
The russet liquid was almost soothing in its taste, despite the burning sensation in the back of your throat after swallowing it. It was sweet at the same time that it was spicy, giving your tastebuds the imagination that caramel and cinnamon dwelled on them. You relished in the taste while following the man setting up the oncoming poker game.
He'd placed the dealer chip before himself and was currently shuffling the cards. It was clear it was his profession by how smoothly he did it.
Hence, not until he seemed satisfied did he put them down beside the box and redirected his eyes to flicker between you and Steve.
"How many chips do you desire?" The dealers gaze had locked with yours as he asked the question, yet before you could answer him, you were cut off short.
"We'll take ten thousand worth of chips each", you glanced at Steve as he said this.
"Deciding to become a gentleman all of a sudden?" You remarked while the dealer started to stack the number of tokens the man opposite you had requested. A tug tilted the dark-blonde mob boss mouth upwards into a smirk.
"I'm always a gentleman".
"A gentleman would've offered a higher amount", his smile dropped. "This was a forced act of charity".
"This is nothing more than entertainment to pass our time during our meeting", he got defensive. You heard it by how sharply he worded the sentence.
"Who said passing time should be done cheaply?" It was clear you didn't want Steve to answer, by how you neglected him of any further attention by looking elsewhere.
While your and Steve's short conversation had taken place, you'd missed how efficiently the dark-haired man had dealt out not only each of your chips but also your individual pair of cars. Even the aluminium case was off the table.
"Are you ready to begin?" You only met the dealer's eyes momentarily before looking at Steve.
"If the gentleman is, so am I".
"You heard the lady", as much mockery that you'd accentuated the title aimed at him, as much did he put on the one he returned to you. You didn't take ill, simply peeked at your cards, a two and eight, both spades, before starting the first round of betting by chucking two hundred worth of chips into the pot.
The dealer nodded, understanding the first game had begun. Thus, looking expectantly at the Canine boss for his move. Steve looked at his cards before calling as well. Meaning the dealer could show the first three cards you would play after.
The flop was turned up quickly despite the awkward placing the man had at the end of the table. Seven of hearts, two of clubs and eight of spades was the first batch of cards. So far, you only sat on a pair of eights. Not great.
"So, Steve, tell me now when our entertainment has started, why have I bothered to come here?" You shortly diverted your eyes from the game to grab your glass of whiskey. Once you looked upon the table again, the fourth street card was presented, queen of diamonds. You called.
"I'm here to offer you a deal", as expected, you thought to yourself and withstood the urge to roll your eyes, not solely because of what he'd said but also that he raised the bet. He was sure he would win.
"Speak up then", you spoke after sipping your drink.
You knew the slight twitch in the corner of his mouth wasn't from what one could read as impatience from you -which it wasn't, just a command- but rather that the last card turned for this round much have matched what he desired. And the card had been the queen of spades. Thus, instead of following his raised bet with a call or even a further raise, you checked. Steve called.
When the dealer confirmed the round was over and it was time for showdown, you and the mob boss opposite you both flipped your cards visible for the other. As you guessed, he'd won and it was on queens, three of a kind.
While the dealer pushed the pot of this game towards Steve and quickly went on with collecting the cards and reshuffling them, the Canine finally looked at you.
"Concerning how you ventured into my territory the last few months, I want you to pull back all your dealings with everyone on my side of New York, no matter how big or small", you cocked a brow at Steve's demand.
"You were the one overstepping the border to my area first. I only answered", you reminded the mob boss while the next poker-round began. You had better cards this time, a jack and a nine.
"And that's my deal, sweetheart", he began once he'd followed your call and once more, the flop was turned. You didn't even pay attention to the cards, as your eyes snapped up to him and nose scrunched at the nickname he used for you. "If you don't pull back your advances in Brooklyn, I'll continue painting your streets red".
It was how brazenly he stated that he wouldn't stop the killing that made your jaws clench. If this hadn't been a conversation eye to eye, preferably over the phone where you could mute yourself if needed, you would've put down your whiskey glass a lot less gently. But now, only the awaited echo of crystalline glass settling on the marble side-table sounded.
"So you want me to pull back my offence? Solely for you to stop the killing? Not pull back your forces from Manhattan, just stop picking off my allies?" You questioned him, instinctively checking to not bother with the game.
"You heard it", was all Steve said as he followed your act of checking, consequently making the last card become turned without any further bet placed than the initial one.
You continued observing the dark-blonde man. His eyes, albeit the light blue could trick you, conveyed no humour. So he was serious.
You didn't know if that made things better or simply made you lose all and any hope in a man that tried running an empire this way. You'd expected a poor deal to come from him. But this, this wasn't just bad. It was ridiculous.
You definitely hadn't been playing to win this round. Which, when you absentmindedly called before the showdown, became apparent. You got two pair on your jack and nine. Commonly, you would've bet a little more on that. Although seeing how Steve got four of a kind with his ten's, whatever you didn't do wouldn't have mattered. Your hand wasn't enough to win.
"Do you think that's how you run an empire?" You broke the silence quite harshly. At least it was enough for the man distributing the pot and collecting the cards to jerk slightly. But you didn't care about him. Closer to the truth was that you all but ignored his shuffling in your peripheral. What you concentrated on was the rise of Steve's eyebrow at your remark.
"It works, doesn't it. Or do you have any pointers on how you think I should run it, sweetheart?" The dog had really crawled under your skin, as Shuri had said.
"You shouldn't run it as your father", you wanted to snap at him. Instead, you levelled your voice, forced it to not turn shrill with agitation. And it struck a nerve, not his pride but a nerve. It was clear by how Steve remained leaned forward after having inspected his new set of cards. "Your visionary is old-school. To remain in control and run an empire, you need to be able to read the future. At the moment, all you have is just a dirty business".
"Dirty? You ain't really the cleanest angel in this world when picking of my men", you definitely had struck a nerve, seeing how his voice had become thicker but more powerful.
However, despite Steve's try to show his authority, you waved of his clap-back dismissively while leaning forwards and not more than tipping the edge of your own cards to see the suit and symbol. A queen and an Ace, both decorated with the sigil of a spade. You withheld showing the amusement towards both the Canine boss and his outburst and the feeling of finally having a game that would be yours to win.
"I've never said I was. But, even those killing on my order is smooth and precise. No tracks. Which is quite contrasting to your manslaughter", thanks to Steve already resting his forearms on his knees, the mob boss swift move of following your raised bet even before the first three cards was presented went fast.
You couldn't help but glance up at him for a short second before looking down again to the new card the dealer turned. A smirk now threateningly close to spreading. Because what you'd seen was a pair of blue eyes growing darker than any brown eyes ever been. And those eyes were set on you rather than the first poker game you had any genuine interest in.
"You've got your point across. You ain't ready to put a bullet between someone's eyes to clear a hurdle..."
"Clearly, I haven't gotten my point across if you misunderstood it", you cut Steve off halfway through his sentence, one you knew would've ended in a demand for a yes or no answer on the deal he oh so kindly offered.
Before looking up at him, you made your move in the poker game, a call. Steve, who still had his eyes trained on you, chucked a random amount of chips into the pot, resulting in not only a three doubled raise than what the original call had been but also for the round to continue to the last card.
"What I meant, Steve, is that I'm ready to fight for what I've created. Though, compared to you, I know people are resources, not constant hurdles", you said, eyes tracking down to the last card now resting upon the table. "Together with this, the cogs upholding your empire are getting rusty and soon won't be able to be changed at all because the model is too old. You invest in nightclubs and any other category of clubs where one can drink themselves stupid, along with other businesses that even I, who run a syndicate, frown upon. It ain't sustainable, so why would I ever seal a deal with you, knowing your empire will crumble in a few years? Give me one good reason".
You didn't need to look up and away from the table to see how the Canine boss fisted his hands, that you saw anyways.
"You've just pointed out why you should seal the deal while you can", this, however, made your gaze turn upwards to meet his. "You may be ready to fight, but how dirty? I invest in things that make money. I pave my own way instead of hesitantly following an already existing one. I'll be the one surviving because if something ever malfunctions in my empire, I won't be put in a situation unfamiliar to me, unlike you. If your perfectly built skyscraper suddenly gets hits by an earthquake, it ain't built to withstand it".
"As I said, give me one good reason and I'll even entertain the thought of considering your deal", you let yourself remain unfazed by Steve's previous threat. Because even though he hit his head on some points, what he'd said wasn't reason, just intimidation.
"It's the best decision for your little empire, sweetheart". The condescending manner he said it this in made you, even though your blood steadily began to boil by the audacity of yet another wealthy and power-hungry mob boss to speak down to you, simply glance down at the two cards laying face down before you.
There was no need to look at them once more. You wouldn't forget a queen of spades and ace of spades existed there. You would especially not forget it when ten of spades, jack of spades and the king of spades rested among the five upturned community cards.
"If you're brave enough to call me sweetheart, are you brave enough to go all-in?" You pushed all your chips into the pot as you said this. When looking up at Steve after that, the first thing you were met by was the cocky look on his face. It was all created by that quirk of his brow, the proud look in his eyes telling you how wrong your decision had been. And that he, without hesitation, mimicked your move.
However, you knew the Canine boss lost all the money he'd put into the game the moment he did. When he put his hand down, showing the straight flush of hearts, numbered from king to nine, it was simply a fact.
"Show me your cards, sweetheart", you only tipped your head, flipping your cards to lay flat on the table, open for the man opposite you to see.
There was no need for you to watch your royal flush. Thus, you simply watched the change on Steve's face. His smirk shifted into a thin line. His arrogant appearance trickled away in a ripple, initiated from the twitch by the side of his nose. Your victory didn't only irk him. He loathed it.
"You're rash and impatient and forgets to think when your temper takes over. You see, Steve, that's why you may win the first few matches, but not the league. So, should I really listen to you speaking about what's best for me when you can't even win a little game of poker?" You caught how his eyes snapped up to glare at you but paid it no mind as you turned towards the dealer.
"Could you collect the chips and transfer them to cash?" You asked the dark-haired men, who, with a swift nod, answered your question.
"What's your name?" The man glanced at Steve, obviously noting that the one who'd hired him for the evening wasn't in the best mood.
You had heard the rumour of Steve being a charmer, which settled deals easy most of the time. However, you also heard that the Canine boss was quick, if not quicker, to take out the gun if his charm didn't do the job. Regarding how cautious this man was, whatever the dark-blonde man still glaring daggers at you had done to rent either his service or this whole club hadn't contained faith, simply fear.
That was why you didn't push any further for a name.
"Very well, keep the money as a tip", the dealer swiftly snapped his head to look at you, eyes wide.
"B-but..."
"I have no use for it and seeing as you did a good job, you earned it", your voice, albeit softer and not as foul as when directed at Steve, didn't leave any room for discussion. This the dark-haired man also understood, as he gave you a small smile as thanks and hastily collected the tokens.
Within a minute, the former dealer had arranged all the chips that he would trade for the hefty amount they were worth, along with the rest of the poker material he'd had with him. And once done, he only left with an appreciative nod towards you, rather than both you and Steve as he'd done when first entering.
It was in the echo of the door shutting that you finally looked at Steve again. His eyes were heated, but you couldn't but smile at him instead of answering with a similar scowl.
"Steven, like this poker game shown, not only was my hand valued higher than yours but so is my empire. I do not hear any bargain coming from you about how you should've won this game or how we should meet in a middle that favoured you more than me, despite that your hand was a straight flush while mine was a royal flush. So, why are you doing it with my empire?" You uncrossed your legs, leaning forward similarly as he had done for the past minutes. "Rules are rules, are they not? And if we follow the rules of poker, that means the highest rank of hands is set to win. Therefore, I'm the one who should go winning out of this deal you try to settle with me too", he was grinding his jaws and you guessed his mind was grinding equally as hard.
"You seem to forget that luck is a big part of the game". Steve's voice was more a gruff sound than anything else.
"Oh, but I haven't", you hummed, leaning backwards until your back leaned into the spine of your leathered stool.
Reaching for your whiskey glass, you simply held it for a minute, an index finger tapping against the side, while letting your eyes glide over the Canine boss.
"You see, your success is all about luck. You're an only child, your father's golden boy. Of course, you get to inherit the empire he established before you because he believes you'll be able to rule it with the same grace as he. Why you took so long to step into the role, though, is a mystery. But I didn't mind, seeing as you left room for more suitable individuals to take The Canines former position", he leaned backwards again when you said this and you knew it was a reaction connected solely to your words. Once again, you'd struck a weak spot because he remained silent as his features became pinched and hands gripped the armrests.
"Compared to you, though, my route has been tough, self-learnt and mastered. Upon that, I have a cover, I got money from working and through business choices those sums only raised. You may be the luck of the game, but I am the one with the skill".
"Only because the rest of the world thinks your fortune is a lucky investment, everyone in this world knows the truth, no matter how much you try to hide it. Your money is as dirty as mine", the octave Steve's voice had dropped into to display whatever threat or resentment he held for you at the moment, made you chuckle rather than shy away from him.
"But I try to wipe the dirt off of them at least".
"What? With your charity galas to raise money for those who need it? It's the biggest joke I ever heard".
It was always amusing to hear someone resent your charity galas because you believed anyone could and would hold them if they simply wanted to. But to take up a gun, shoot someone and then hide was more manageable than to execute a double-sided play.
"It may be a joke to you, Rogers, but I keep my facade up to ensure my and my empires survival. You have already crumbled by not caring how much blood that drips in the wake of your name", you stated. When continuing, you cocked your head to the side as if you spoke to a child. "So you know what, the best thing you can do for your empire is to sign my deal", while you'd talked, you also reached for the folder containing the contract. And, it was with a blasé edge you threw it before him on the table.
"If you don't sign it and have it delivered to me, I know you've declined my offer and this war will be ended in another way", you took a last sip of th whiskey before putting it down on the table separating you rather then the side table it was meant to stand on. "Great doing business with you, Steven".
You didn't wait for a reply nor refusal before you rose from the leather armchair with your handbag in your grasp. Walking towards the door and the impending sound of the clubs blaring music, you left the mob boss that had dared to challenge you behind.
Description: You, a hitman with a degree in psychology, is begged by Steve Rogers to help his friend, the ex Winter Soldier. Will you accept and if you do, will you succeed without the former Soldier getting to know you willingly chose to become what he was forced to?
Description; You’ve met Bucky and as if that wasn’t enough, he take up more of your thoughts than you care to admit. It seems however, that your brain pays to much attention to him then what’s good, leading to interesting times in the gym.
After you had your initial meeting with Bucky, you suddenly saw him everywhere, unlike before. Of course, you knew it wasn't because of you letting go of your fear of seeing him, but it was the next step in the process.
After the first meeting, you had left Steve to walk through the next phase with Bucky, though that didn't mean he wouldn't inform you afterwards. After an hour, of what you knew wasn't only a serious conversation, he came knocking at your door. Without hesitating you let him in and before even closing the door he started to talk. To yours and even his surprise, you learned, he said that Bucky had been pretty willing to take the progress further. That was the reason you saw him more, like now.
You were in the gym, one of your practices with Nat in full swing. You had noticed Bucky entering, about halfway into your session. Though you only had gotten a glimpse of him, it was enough to see that he hunched in on himself. You noted how he sat down on a bench at the far end of the gym, where not many people put their stuff.
The same moment you knew your attention strayed a bit too long, you felt it. Your legs got swept from underneath you and with a heavy thud, a groan in its follow, you fell on the sparring matt, wrists stinging from trying to catch yourself.
”You need to concentrate”, Nat’s voice sounded from above and behind you. Rolling over from your stomach to back, you saw the redhead standing just a few feet from you.
”How the hell did you get there?” She couldn’t contain the smug expression as she answered.
”Seems your head was lost for longer than I thought”, she chuckled when you narrowed your brows while sitting up. ”You avoided a few blows, before giving me an open space”. You grunted, knowing very well that you only could blame yourself.
”You can’t make yourself fall for her like that”, the sudden voice made you turn to glance over your shoulder, immediately finding the blonde soldier walking towards you.
"I'm gonna use that one towards you next time", you responded and heard his chuckle as he now stepped onto the sparring matt.
"You need to take me down first", you raised an amused eyebrow to what he said, unable to hide your own smirk while answering.
"You know I'm able to".
"All too well", his words fittingly came as he stopped before you, smile still present as he stretched out his hand for you to take. Reaching for it, he helped you to a standing position again.
"Should I leave you guys to the showdown or?" Your attention was pulled towards Nat, who had closed the space between the two fo you. You saw the entertainment in her eyes.
"Although I owe you since last week, I have my own session to go to", Steve declined and not until him acknowledging Bucky, did you feel the eyes which were on you. Your minor shift didn't go unnoticed by the blonde, which brows knitted together in the same old Steve fashion way, as he glanced towards Bucky's direction.
"When did he come here?" You didn't want the brown-haired man to feel pressured from multiple sets of eyes on him, so you continued looking up at Steve while answering.
"A few minutes, maybe", you said in a hushed tone, one which Nat followed upon.
"He's the reason her attention strayed", she nodded towards you and Steve's gaze trailed back towards you.
"Only good I have an extra set of eyes to help me, how’s he doing?”
”Haven’t talked to him today, although if you remember we set a meeting later this afternoon last time. So, if it is anything hopefully he’ll tell then”, you further answered. You knew he was more than happy Bucky began socialising even the tiniest bit, but something bugged him, you as well. The frown Bucky had the first time meeting you seemed to be staying. Every time you’d met him, he had it, even when Steves was there.
”Feels like he needs it”, his eyes switched between you and Nat, seeming coming to a realisation. ”Well, I should excuse myself so you can continue”.
”It's okay we're done either way. If you don’t want your ass beaten again?” Nat smugly smiled at you, to which you chuckled.
”Without distraction, I think I owe you a face-full of matt”, Steve huffed out a laugh and patted your shoulder, before heading over to the brunette in the other end of the gym. Following Steve with your gaze, you only noticed Nat taking over his former place beside you from the corner of your eye.
”Are you sure you're gonna beat me? Because your distraction is still here...”, you whipped to look at her, greeted by a mockingly raised eyebrow and head tipped the way Steve and Bucky stood. You looked their way, noticing Bucky still sat on the bench. As if feeling your eyes on him, he turned to look at you.
”Piss off”, you playfully elbowed her, even so only a soft smile spread on her features.
”Sure thing, you coming or?” She glanced towards the soldiers, both now standing and warming up for their sparring.
”I’ll stay, need to fix my sorry ass anyway because of all the times I landed on it today”, you both chuckled while walking to where your things were.
”Understandable, can’t have you fall like that on the field, we need you trigger-happy”, you groaned so loud you think even the boys heard it, but with the despise for the nickname you were unable to do anything else.
”Why did he need to come up with that?” You muttered with as much despise rolling off your tongue, as laugh did when Clint mentioned it the first time in the interrogation room, right before an injured Steve had stumbled in.
”He thought it was funny”.
”It isn’t even accurate”, you threw up your hand in despair, the bag hanging on your shoulder inching down. Nat laughed when you muttered a few chosen curse words the archer's way, almost hoping he would hear them.
"Complain all you want, he will not let it go”, she said, you let out a sigh while shaking your head, knowing she was right about that fact.
”Oh almost forgot”, you raised a brow, wondering what it was as she took a step back, coming to stand closer to you before whispering. ”Don’t work that ass in front of the boys, think their attention will be as good as yours”, your eyes widened to what she said.
”Jesus Nat!” You all but shouted, to which she only winked at you before walking away again. You debated on chucking your water bottle in the back of her head, but the eyes you felt bore into the back of your neck, made you conceal yourself.
As you turned around, you met Steves eyes, crinkled in the corners because of his smile. He knew you and the redhead get along well, also about your antics of teasing each other, so he had probably already figured that was the cause of your reaction. Although when you turned to Bucky, his eyes were set on you, a puzzled look on his face. You prayed to whatever god that he hadn’t heard a word Nat just said to you.
”You staying?” Steve asked, breaking the silence which had settled when only the three of you were left.
”Yeah”, you tried shrugging away from the thoughts Nat just planted in your mind. ”Will round up a few things, then I’ll be on my way”, you smiled as you began to walk further into the gym, passing them. Both nodded before engrossing in their conversation, mainly led by Steve, while they walked to the middle of the sparring matt.
You worked through your exercises while trying not to get distracted by the sounds echoing in the gym. Grunts, huffs and moans of displeasure together with heavy thuds and slams of someone falling into the matt was the background sound for you while training. You were happy that most of the machines you needed to use in the machine park were located further in, making you unable to see any of the soldiers sparring. However, even your luck seemed to have run out.
When you only had one exercise left, you found yourself walking to the front row of machines. They were lined up alongside the sparring-mats, a safe few feet away although not enough for you. You now had front-seat to the sparring of the two super soldiers.
While piling weights on each side of the machine, Nat’s words kept ringing in your head like a festive banner-waving around.
”Bet ya’ would be laughing in my face if you saw me right now”, you grumbled to yourself imagining Nat standing beside you, laughing while you only tried doing your routine. You stood on the slightly angled platform, putting the top of the machine on your shoulders, hooking off the safety mechanism and started to squat.
Clint was the one who had showed you how to use this machine, like the rest of them. Even though he didn’t use it so much himself, he said it could be beneficial for you, which you smacked him in the back of the head for saying. But now you maybe could muster up thanks to the man because yes, it had its effects.
One set in, one more to go and that were when you heard one of the biggest thuds yet. You’d already locked the machine so it wouldn’t come crashing down on you while resting between sets, so turning around you made in no time. Bucky was on the floor, Steve standing and smiling victoriously above him.
”You boys doing good?” The question slipped out from you before you even had the chance to think about it.
”Only minor distractions that’s all”, Steve's laugh eased into a boyish smile while Bucky staggered up to his feet, his furrow gone as he glared at Steve.
”Sure. Just play safe, don’t want anyone of you hurt”, you chuckled, while climbing out of the machine, the last set be damned.
”You don’t want to join us?” Steve asked genuinely, but one look at him told you he was up to something.
”No not really, I would be pinned to the matt more than standing up if going up against any of you”, you didn’t think about your choice of words before seeing Bucky’s raised eyebrows. Maybe he was just shocked about you including him in what you said, but even with his super-soldier enhancement and the metal arm, you highly doubted that was the only thing he reacted to. ”And I have other things to do”, you excused with a smile as you began heading towards the exit. Your eyes didn't stray from the door, not until you heard the baritone voice you’ve gotten used talking to the last two weeks, call out.
”Later?” You turned around, immediately meeting Bucky's gaze, which seemed to never have let you go. Your confusion probably showed in a puzzled expression as he continued his few worded question. ”Talking session?” You caught on quickly after that. ”Of course Bucky, I’ll meet you this afternoon as we decided”, you sent him a small smile and he nodded, turning to Steve who nodded goodbye over his friend shoulder.
You knew that therapy was a charged word, especially for Bucky, so it had come naturally to rename your meetings as soon as you become a regular part of them. Since four weeks back, you've met him three times a week for talking session, spending more time with him than anyone, besides Steve that was.
It hadn't been easy in the beginning, the former soldier sparsely, if ever, initiated topics to talk about. Neither did his few worded answers help you, yet you didn't deem the sessions unproductive, as you came to recognise his patterns and triggers. Getting to know these were detrimental, as even Steve seemed oblivious to some, as he pressured for answers on the wrong topics. You had mentioned this to him a week or two ago, since then you noticed how he gave you more room to work with. At first, you feared he got too apprehensive speaking himself, but he soothed your nerves by repeating what he had said to convince in the beginning. You were the professional.
Since then, you saw how Bucky slowly relaxed and crept out from the shadows and so did Steve. He started bringing it up often, of course when his friend wasn't nearby, that you were the difference which really helped the former soldier. You argued that there wasn't a difference between you and the other Bucky had worked with before you even knew he was in the tower, yet Steve didn't yield saying he never opened up and to a person quite as fast before.
You stopped your writing for a second, shaking your head while watching a few of the notes you had scribbled down on the paper before you. You couldn’t understand how Steve thought you were the cause for Bucky's slow but steady socialisation with the team. Especially not when reading some of the topics you thought the session today could orientate around. You weren't afraid of silence during these meetings, though, you always had some questions prepared in advance to occupy both of you. Because you knew, he wouldn't feel as comfortable having you studying him in silence as in dialogue. Glancing at the time you saw it was only a few minutes until you would meet Bucky, so you began making your way up there.
You didn’t run into Steve any time walking to Bucky’s room, so when you knocked on his door, you assumed you would see a blonde head greeting you. Only that it didn’t happen. Bucky opened the door, his appearance much different from the first time you saw him. He stood straighter, the height difference separating you much more apparent now. His hair, although damp from what you guessed was his post-workout shower, seemed better kept. Neither did his eyes look as hollow, his face radiated instead of the dullness it had before.
”Hello Bucky”, you greeted him and he mumbled out a greeting before gesturing for you to enter. It was the first time he did that, motioning for you to pass him first instead of he turning and walking in. You weren’t surprised by it but simply didn’t expect it. With a smile, you nodded thanks and walked in. You quickly scanned the room, something you found yourself doing every time coming here, this time perhaps more in search for the blonde man.
”Steve hasn’t come yet”, you acknowledge finding his usual seat empty. Turning around you watched Bucky just about letting go of the door handle, the wooden piece now closed. ”You want to wait for…”, you hadn’t the chance to finish the sentence before he cut you off.
”He won’t come”, he began, probably noticing the blunt tone of his voice when you let out a shocked oh because when continuing, he uncrossed his arms looking down at the floor. ”I thought I could talk with only you this time”, he glanced up from the locks which had fallen in his face. ”If that’s alright?” You smiled at his words, happy with the trust that had begun to settle.
”Of course it’s, you’re the one choosing, we’re just here to help”, you answered him sincerely glancing down at the armchair Steve usually sat in. Perhaps Bucky saw your hesitation because his voice shortly made itself known again.
”It’s ok”, glancing over your shoulder, you saw him slowly walk closer to his usual place. Sitting down, you saw that he did the same, smiling for yourself as it seemed he was a bit more comfortable in your presence than usual.
”So how did the training go?” You didn't think any further about what your question could lead into, not until you saw the familiar tug of a smile in the corner of his lip.
”Good, until Steve whopped my ass one time”, you watched him as it looked like he drifted away in the thought.
”Only one time?” You asked him. The teasing tone which you hid in your voice, instead showed itself as a bit back smirk.
”You think he did it more times?”
”I am positive”, you tried holding your smirk invisible for the man opposite you.
”You’re right he did it a few more times” when he’d said this his eyes flickered away from yours, the frown, which you hadn’t noticed until now hadn’t been present, taking its place.
”Is there something bothering you Bucky?” It looked like you dumped him in ice by his wide eyes snapping to you. ”You just have the same frown Steve sometimes get when in thought, is it something you want to talk about?” You hurried to explain so he wouldn’t get uncomfortable and when he kept looking shocked, you started trying to excuse yourself, thinking you missed a trigger. ”I’m sorry…”
While you got worried trying to find a fault in what you had done, Bucky was in his own head. He zoned out as soon as you wondered if something was wrong, something you noticed simply because of his frown. He was shocked you asked or rather, that you noted it in the first place, but he reminded himself it was your job to do so. No, it wasn’t your job to help him. Steve had asked for it as a favour and while he wasn’t upset about the fact, it bugged him. He didn’t know what you were to Steve, you were close, almost too close to only be friends.
The thought of the first time he saw you with his friend made him remember how pleasant your simple present had been. How you had treated him as someone and not something. Yet that was not all, he hadn't needed to verbally express everything he thought. You could read him easier than others, almost even better than Steve. It was nice somehow, not needing to word everything, yet he would feel more at ease if he could've done the same with you. The only things he knew about you he got from observing, besides your name from asking Steve the first time. He knew the blonde noticed his curiosity in you, yet he never brought up the conversation, standing by his words he said after you left the first time. If you want to know more about her, just ask.
What brought him back from his thoughts was your sudden movement and his eyes instantly snapped to you. Your eyes continuously flicked over his features and though he didn't know exactly why he tried reassuring you.
”It’s ok, it ain’t anything I just…”.
You couldn’t tell what he was about to say and after the zone out he just had you didn’t dare to guess either. So you stayed silent until he continued by own accord. He looked up at you, eyes searching your face, the insecurity shining in his own.
”I just wanted to ask you a question?” You furrowed your brows, this was not in the least what you imagined. You nodded, not wanting to offend him if this is what bugged him. ”How are you?” Bucky cringed when asking you, but you couldn't help a soft smile spreading from spreading.
”I’m good, thank you for asking”, you looked at Bucky standing opposite you, he was still timid, but something began telling you that he held himself back. ”Do you have more questions?” You tried saying it gently, mainly as you have seen how tense he became before. You watched him and you saw him take a deep breath and nod.
”I have an idea if your all ears?” His head tilting answered your question, which made you proceed to tell him the plan you thought about before the session. ”Because I ask you a lot of things, getting to gradually know you… it would only be fair that you ask me some in return”, you purposed the thought and even if you couldn’t read his reaction of it being good or bad, his answer confirmed it.
”It would”, his answer came in a more self assure tone and the smile he gave you was the first one you’ve seen been directed towards you.

SERIES MASTERLIST
Steve hadn’t let you out of his sight after your talk, even though you thought he would go, most likely pulling you with him, on his daily run he missed earlier that morning, but he didn’t. He spent time with you, talking about every random thing coming to his or your mind. You truly felt that talking to the blonde man did calm you.
”You serious?” You snorted, not too much ladylike, to something Steve said. The laugh escaping under your breath and the shake of your head made Steve feel that the heated moment from before eased up even more.
He knew it wasn’t time for taking up the conversation you earlier had again, perhaps it never really would be, but he replayed it in his mind. The way he saw your facade crack bit by bit the more you told him about the likelihood about you and Bucky, being anything really, was impossible when he came to the compound. He saw your past haunting you almost as much as Bucky's. It made him chew on his lip when the memories came back. How you just moved, what you said had looked so different then.
Left shoulder. Scapula. Not enough to kill him, but if the shot would’ve hit its target, not even his superhuman powers would’ve saved him.
They’d just rounded up the mission, another HYDRA base, as it seemed they only popped up somewhere else as soon they thought they were done. His shield was at his feet and he began crouching down to pick it up, although halted mid-movement. The new tech Stark equipped him with was unusual and foreign, so it would take some time getting used to. Instead of his worked in movements, he now just lifted his hand slightly to retrieve it. He waited for the magnetic force in his suit’s gauntlet to make the shield come back into its place, though it never had a chance to appear. It hit him like a slap to the side, although the immense pain suggested it was more than that. He didn’t know for sure if it was a critical hit, his mind blanking out a bit as he lifted his hand to the wound. The time slowed down as he felt the hole in his suit and the fluid coming from it.
”Rogers, what are you doing, your heart-rate raised point seconds ago?” Tony’s voice came through the com, Steve concluding he must be in the jet already to notice his charts.
”Hit”, his voice came out low, not by choice but it felt like something held him back from speaking louder. His eyes searched the area, the clipped forest the signals from the Hydra base lead them to. He didn’t understand, they’d cleared the area, no more of their agents should be left.
He was zoned out enough to not hear the words of his teammates trough the com, although the mull of their voices still reached him. Suddenly he caught something, something shimmering a distance away. He fixed his concentration on it and if he hadn’t lost enough blood for it to be deadly, he swore he saw something move, rather someone. It only looked like a shadow at first, then he saw it morphing -almost questioning his sanity- until he saw the person standing up. He recognised the form as a woman and the thing she skilfully slung over her shoulder he only identified cause he’d seen Bucky make the same move in the ’40s. It was a rifle.
”Steve, answer your damn com, could you?” Instead of hearing it in his ear, he heard it from behind him. Nat’s voice made him turn his head, his body following it. Her eyes widen seeing his hand, tightly pressed against his wound, something which couldn’t have been created more than a minute ago, or else he wouldn’t be as steady as he was on his feet. The shock on her face disappeared when she jumped to action.
”Steve’s hit, shoulder, injury severe by the looks of… everything, affects going to show sooner rather than later, he needs med guys”, she said while pressing even harder on his shoulder and the pressure made him grunt, as the stabbing pain made him wobble. He blinked, trying to get the dizziness out of his head enough to clearly see when throwing a look over this shoulder once more.
”Nat”, he gripped her fussing hands, stilling them enough for her to look up at her. ”Sniper”, the words trailed away when he, trough the corner of his eyes, saw Nat looking the same way he did.
The women were still there, not far away from where she stood up at first, looking over her shoulder. Her hair waved slightly in the silent wind before she made a gesture to them, which made Steve grit his teeth. She saluted him.
”Tony, it was a sniper. Affiliation…”, Nat glanced up at Steve, who only shook his head. ”Unclear. If you’re able, search the area, she can’t humanly possibly have come far”
”Tony is already in the movement and I’ve already contacted Cho, the only thing which should make it impossible for us to take him to her is if you don’t get him into this jet”, Bruce voice sounded over the com.
It was a struggle, but Nat had been able to, with the help of Clint meeting her up halfway, take Steve to the jet. The ride home to the tower was nerve-wracking but not a second too short as Dr Cho met them as soon as the jet landed in the hangar. She couldn’t say for sure, but when Steve had trouble lying down on the stretcher, grunting and flinching away, which just created more pain, she suggested a broken bone in the shoulder.
The x-ray went fast and with a quick look, Dr Cho could say with certainty that the shot had gone through the scapula, a critical hit for anyone really, although for the circumstances the breakage had been clean. No splitter with the bullet, neither had bone been wrongly fixated, so the only operation necessary would be retrieving the bullet and fixate the broken bone for it to heal correctly. After the surgery and Steve’s awakening, he was informed he would be ok. The tissue would heal quickly, although the bone would take some time. He would be out of the game and even if he was a super soldier, rehabilitation would be necessary to build up the muscles and other soft tissue.
They found her. Maybe a month or so after the incident, but they found her. Steve didn’t believe they did at first, seeing as a ghost never reappear.
”Hey Rogers, I think I found your shooter”, he remembered Tony informing and Steve have possibly never reacted as quickly as he did. Flying up from his bed, feeling the discomforting pain shooting trough the still not fully healed shoulder.
He’d come into Tony’s lab, which served as his office more than the actual one, a big picture of the women on display. Both Tony and Bruce watched it, live footage which had been stopped in action.
”That’s her”, he couldn’t say he recognised her eyes, as he hadn’t seen it from the distance, neither her hair colour as it seemed to have been in an up-do then.
”Are you sure, don’t wanna get the wrong person. Shooting Captain America ain’t a light crime”, Tony cocked an eyebrow his way, but Steve only nodded. Her movement reminded of the shooters, even if those he’d seen had been few. Something with her seemed to fit the picture and though Tony hadn’t been able to get any footage that time, he didn’t need the comparison.
”Well then we take her in, probably without as much fuss as possible”
The moment you heard a knock on your door and lowered voices outside, you immediately knew what would greet you when you opened. With a smile, you met a small part of the Avengers who stood outside your apartment door, the rest most likely station at other places for back up.
"You are suspected of shooting a member in our team", it was Tony Stark who spoke and you couldn't but shrug at was he said.
"Sure", no denying, neither confessing, something you had learned to do. After that, you followed with them without any hustle, knowing it damn well would worsen a situation that already was under control.
Steve hadn’t been with the ones who took you in, Nat had. She gave him the information about how it went. So the only thing the man found reasonable, even though his injury, was meeting you. He didn’t think he would be able to do it, because Nat almost had pushed him down in bed when he said where he was going, but in the end, he walked down the corridor, the redhead trailing behind him. Even though he didn’t need to limp, the subdued pain emitting from the wound made him do it. He didn’t know if this was a bad idea or not, because you had tried to kill him, although still you hadn’t shown any hostility since you'd come.
Steve stopped outside the interrogation room you quite repeatedly left and came back to, he heard. Looking through the window, he saw you sitting there, a smile on your face as Clint sat opposite you. Your eyes gleamed in the light, while you laughed at something the man said.
Why did you laugh? The question surfaced in Steve’s mind when he saw you, sitting in cuffs, smiling as if you sat opposite a friend. As he pushed the door open all the eyes turned to him, the conversation dying with his entrance. Your gaze flickered over him, staying a bit longer on his shoulder. In the end, they settled to meet his gaze, your face much more stoic then before.
”How are you doing?” Your question made him frown, sceptical to your casualty.
”Could be better”, his voice was bitter.
”Better could be dead”, the smart comment made him cock a brow towards you, yet he felt like if you weren't a foe, both Clint and Nat would’ve laughed.
”Better could also be not shot”, he answered and you only shrugged.
”Yeah, sorry ’bout that”, you apologised. Steve didn’t answer, he felt that most people would’ve mumbled out the apology but you hadn't. You said it while holding his gaze, something which could be seen as a real apology, although he felt like you just said it because you hadn’t anything to fear.
”Can I talk to her?” He asked Clint, who only glanced at Nat behind him before standing up.
”Steve, can I have a word with you before that?” Nat’s voice made him take a step back instead of forward towards the chair. ”You can’t talk alone with her. She’s the most hospitable person we’ve ever have the pleasure to take in, but we cant trust her just because of that…”, she pointed out in a hushed voiced, enough for only him to hear. He looked over his shoulder, not finding you looking at him expectantly, instead having an easy conversation with Clint.
”She could snap, I know that very well. You can stay if you want, I’ll be fine with either-or”, he said, only wanting to talk with you, not in the moment caring if all of Shields agents stood behind him.
A curt nod from Nat made him turn and take the seat in the chair. Clint nodded goodbye before beginning to walk out of the room, stopping when passing Nat and exchanging a few words. He didn’t concentrate on them, only hearing Nat would be staying, nothing new.
He sat there, looking at you, his shooter. There wasn’t anything special about you, nothing that at least would make him stop and think killer. You were one of those one could see passing by on the busy streets of New York, fitting perfectly in because no one really didn’t in the big city.
”Why?”
”Need to elaborate Captain”, you answered with a sweet smile.
”How many questions could I probably want to ask you personally?” He knew he sounded more bitter than he intended to, but it seemed you didn’t care about it.
”Oh, more than you probably think you could. Why did I shoot you the way I did? Why did I execute it on one of your missions? Why did I even shoot you?” You sported a sugar-sweet smile, one he actually didn’t think was fake, though you said such heavy things. He didn’t see you flinch, nor did your tone even waver when rhetorically asking any of the questions.
”You hit your head on the last one, why did you shoot me?”
”Because somebody wanted you to be shot” he narrowed his brows, no waver again. You weren't here to play, he noticed that. If he would ask, you probably would tell.
”You're an assassin”, your attention swayed from Steve to Nat when she said this. Browse furrowing much like his own.
”No”, you weren't an assassin, if you so had been you would give everything away to easy. He looked at Nat, her eyes swaying from you to meet his, the same question he had reflecting in her eyes. What were you?
”Your good with guns”, Steve caught himself saying it, too late to take back.
”Observant for only seeing me such a short bit”, you replied, pointing out he’d only seen you for what couldn’t be longer than seconds when he was shoot.
”Had a friend, capabilities similar to yours”, he thought of Bucky, though he didn’t believe his childhood friend had been this good with weapons, even if he wanted to think so. That concluded you were no ordinary war soldier and as you neither were an assassin, only one thing came to mind.
"Interesting friends you have Captain”, you hummed, even though you didn't expose yourself, he knew you compared Bucky to yourself.
”So how much?” This caught you a bit of guard. He saw the shock on you face before you answered, not verbally but with the motion to further explain, mentioning for him to once more elaborate. ”Don’t play dull, you know what I’m talking about. The number, how big was the number?” Steve felt his patience thin, not that he had a reason to feel like it as you, as Nat said, was the most non-hostile person they’ve ever taken in.
”Isn’t it selfish to ask for that?” You smirked when you saw that he would continue.
”No, not if I maybe want to turn myself in if the price is high enough”, his comeback made you chuckle.
”Are you sure the price ain’t gonna give you a heart attack?” You questioned him, as if you were worried about him after putting a bullet in his shoulder. Steve smiled while touching his injured shoulder.
”Didn’t die out of this, so I’m feeling the most alive ever after”, he joked, not knowing where it came from. You nodded as she lifted you finger. Steve saw Nat flinching at the side and he made a sign under the table for her to stay back. With your pointer, you drew a single number in the middle of the table.
”One? One what?” Steve asked, his curiosity almost licking the table where your finger had drawn the mark. You leaned back, crossing your arms while watching Steve as the answer was as clear as day.
”It’s a nine-digit number”, your voice almost echoed around him and if he wasn’t the slowest on math, he would’ve said the number Nat did.
”One hundred million dollars”, she almost sounded astonished as she said the number out loud.
”Yup”, you popped the p before continuing. ”Pretty number for America’s golden boy”, the smile, almost giddy on your lips, made him conclude that he was more than right.
”You’re a hitman”, he voiced his thought and he heard Nat huffing out her displeasure. He saw how you snapped to look at her.
”You serious”, you snorted. ”At least I get money for my job, instead of just a pat on the head”, Nat squinted her eyes, while Steve was in shock to say anything at the remark. He was grateful for when the door swung open, although none less surprised. Fury walked in, a few agents staying behind outside the room.
”Did you need to get into trouble?” He didn’t direct it at Steve, instead of at you.
”You knew you couldn’t keep me a secret forever”, you answered easily, but Steve saw how a minimal part of your jaw clenched, the smile much more forced than before. It wasn’t Fury who’d sent you, but he knew about the profession or else you wouldn’t incline to him with ”keeping you a secret”.
”Captain Rogers, Agent Romanoff, I suppose this interaction is necessary to clear her name, even though you are more than rightfully to be suspicious”, Fury said before taking a glance over his shoulder.
”It would be for the best Director”, Nat’s forced answer came and Steve saw the gears turning in her head. She noticed him looking, with the glance she gave him, they’d agreed on one thing. Something wasn’t right and they would keep it shut until, if ever, they needed to say something.
”Is the equipment off?” Fury’s voice brought back Nat’s eyes to him.
”Not for the moment, seeing as it was needed before. I’ll be back in a minute”
”Romanoff, you can stay and watch that nobody enters. I’m certain Captain Rogers can further tell the information later”, he said before Nat even was able to leave her spot. She cast a glance at Steve, not worried but wondering, before exiting with a curt nod.
”So Captain…”, Fury began once again ”This is one of Shield secret weapons, close to none know she exists inside the organisation. Meet Y/N Y/L/N, S.H.I.E.L.D’s very own hitman”
”Pleasure to finally meet”, the women said and then it went up to Steve why you knew Fury and possibly other people as well. You played a double game.
You didn’t know how far you would’ve been able to walk by the amount of pacing you’d done back and forth in your room. Probably a mile. You were equally surprised that you hadn’t gone down a floor yet.
”If you wanted an invitation to my room, you could just come down and knock, instead of coming through the roof”, you knew the voice, had heard it shout at you countless times in the gym, laughed with you till you cried, but at the moment it didn’t register fast enough. Faster was your movements, your learned habit, your instinct. Your hand had gripped the cold metal under the pillow on your bed before you could stop yourself.
Nat raised one of her eyebrows, which you only noticed by halting your movements and looking over your shoulder. It wasn’t the only shock in the room, yours was probably higher than hers. Although the action, you didn’t try playing it off, instead you just sighed and laid your hand on top of your pillow.
”If that’s how you’re going to meet Barnes, then I suggest you rethink it”, you slumped down on the bed, hands almost irritably rubbing your face.
”I know… I know”, you muttered as you kept looking at the pillow, almost sensing the cold metalled weapon laying underneath.
”How are you doing?” You heard Nat’s footsteps slowly coming closer.
”Honestly?” Even though it was a question, you knew the answer before she nodded. ”Not good, Steve reminded me a few days ago that Bucky would come here and begin getting settled. So I’ve been cooped up in here ever since”, you responded. You remembered the first time Steve mentioned the preparations for Bucky’s arrival. You hadn’t understood it then, but when Steve went out with the information that most of the team would be staying in the tower and missions would only be assigned if it was necessary, it was clear afterwards. You also remembered the second time, four days ago. Steve had caught you in the hall heading down to train when he reminded you, he’s going to arrive tonight. You couldn’t remember much from that training session, besides that you came from it with a split knuckle.
It had been a month, maybe even two, since Steve and you went to the cafe and he told you everything. One, maybe two months since the stress of Bucky’s arrival made you go into meltdown and Steve comforted you. You felt that another wasn’t far away, but you knew Steve wouldn’t be close this time.
”I noticed”, she stopped before continuing, and the short while you glanced at her. She almost looked troubled by the faraway look in her eyes. ”I’ve seen Barnes here and there, but Steve said he would wait with the interactions a bit.”
”Understandable”, he had talked with you about it. How he should proceed with Bucky coming here and you’d advised him to take it easy. Make Bucky choose when he would go somewhere. Show him the places he will feel secure in first, the rest later. Secure places were important if he would start feeling safe.
”You know you ease Steve’s mind a lot helping him out with how he should think”, now you turned to the redhead sitting beside you. She had a gentle expression, although her red hair framing her face made it look a bit more intense.
”It’s only my pleasure”, you shrugged before continuing. ”It would feel useless if I took my degree without even using it”, she almost snorted out a laugh when you said this.
”You remember that you worked as a psychotherapist, right? Because I do. So you shouldn’t feel your exam is useless. Although what you can feel a bit futile about is not helping Barnes with anything”, a chuckle escaped you, the closest you’d been to a laugh the past days.
”Thanks, Nat, made me feel good then turning it around against me, really nice”, she only smirked, while standing up.
”You know you should help him, your the only one in the actual team having the right knowledge about how to”, you stood up after what she said it, your thoughts immediately going back to the conversation you had with Steve those months ago. You couldn’t do it.
”You know I can’t, I’ll just ruin it”, she cocked an eyebrow towards you all the while she crossed her arms.
”Why are you helping Steve when he asks?”
”Because he needs help”, you didn’t hesitate on helping Steve, he was one of your closest friends, almost bordering to family for you.
”And Bucky doesn’t?” You were shocked, your mouth opening and closing without so much as a sound coming from it. In the end, you let your head fall, shaking it, in disappointment or ignorance, you couldn’t tell the difference.
”I thought so”, was Nat’s final words before opening the door and exiting.
