The old General sat behind his desk inside of dimly lit tent as he lightly tapped his fingers against a piece of parchment paper that he had quickly scrawled a few notes down on a little earlier that day. His son had finally came to him earlier that day and he told him that he had picked himself a Life Guard and now the protective father wanted to see to it that the man that he had chosen would be a good fit to protect his son. He had heard the name tossed about several times before now, but he had never been able to sit down and have a talk with him.
A sudden increase of light alerted him know that someone had entered into the tent and he put the notes away as he glanced up to see a dark haired man with a beard entering inside. “You're Caleb! Benjamin has told me so much about you.” he started as he pushed himself up off of his chair to bring himself to full height to offer the man a firm handshake. “He told me that he thinks of you as a brother.”
Caleb stared into the unblinking eyes of the taller man. His own studying the dragoon's stature. "You sure you can take a hit, Champe?" Teeth were clamped onto the corners of the whaler's lips causing a wry smirk to accompany the question. (thccourier, obvs)
Unamused by the jab the sergeant only flicked his gaze over to the door of the tent where the other conspirator had vanished. “I’ll take care not to break anything.” He deadpanned in return.

Knowing that he was being separated from his brother was painful, but knowing that Caleb would be with Benjamin was reassuring to the younger Tallmadge boy. This way, he knew that, at the very least, Benjamin couldn’t get himself into too much danger. Caleb would be by his side through it all. It was reassuring.
“Keep him safe, alright?” Samuel’s voice was soft as he looked down at Caleb, his hands folded neatly in front of him. “I assume we’ll see each other at some point during this war, but, until then, keep him safe while I can’t, please, Caleb...” He was worried for Caleb’s safety, as well, but he knew that Caleb would insist that there was nothing to worry about. That they’d all make it back to Setauket just fine come the end of this war. “I’m counting on you.”

Since the debriefing, the pain in his shoulder was blinding. He had been angry, ignoring it and concentrating instead on trying to convince Scott how the ambush was p l a n n e d and they n e e d e d to have friends and agents in New York. His arm now in a sling, shoulder and side throbbing, Benjamin sat on the cot in his tent. He had acquired a bottle of brandy and was draining it quickly, seeking a numbing to the pain there and in his heart. An entire troop of dragoons, HIS dragoons, dead. Sole survivor. And everyone believed it was some sort of fluke. Robert Rogers would pay. The bottle was set aside and Benjamin picked up the bonnet, examining it in the dim lantern light. To the side a letter from his father was folded up and sitting atop the envelope it had been delivered in. There was no mistaking the tone, the “request” or the General’s personal seal.
