Yikes.
What your sponsor says when you’re struggling with step 2
What is the actual difference between regular magic and Backyard Magic? Like, in Overture, Sol and Sin's magic at first had no effect on Valentine's spells.
Izuna describes the “Steps” as longer and more complicated compositions.
The simplest way to understand this, is the way music is constructed in Intervals in Music Theory:
You can usually count the distance between each Note being played on the Staff by a maximum of 12 Half Intervals… this is the 12 Steps standard Sol refers to.
Very rarely will Music dip in to 13 Intervals or more or use Whole Steps, let alone generate Perfect Intervals.
If that sounds confusing, let me reiterate: A Half-Step is the “Interval” between two adjacent Notes, a Whole-Step is the distance of two Half-Steps (Four Notes or Major Second).
Something like Zato who was “perfectly tuned” from the Backyard would use incredibly complicated 13 or more Intervals and use Perfect Interval quality.
A “Perfect Composition” is something of a myth, but… in GG’s lore a better composed “Theory” would easily override the “chords” of more simpler spells, somewhat like the difference between playing a music piece with errors versus playing it perfectly or with eloquence.

Reality
Having some time in recovery I realized how naive I can be. I've lost more people to the disease of addiction than I can count on two hands. I shouldn't be surprised when I lose someone by now but I am. Just yesterday I found out someone I know passed away from an overdose and I was honestly shocked. This person had a few years clean. It just cemented in my mind what I already knew. Addiction does not discriminate at all. It doesn't care if you have 3 days clean or 30 years clean. It doesn't care if you're young or old. It is after your life. This disease is fatal if left untreated. The basic text says that addiction is cunning, baffling, and insidious. INSIDIOUS. Think of the word choice. When I hear insidious I think of the movie. That is the one movie that scares me. And here I am in recovery knowing that this disease is just that. Scary. Seeing someone die who knows that the program of NA or AA or whatever 12-step program works go back out and die makes me realize that it is never ok to stop working a program. It shows me how dangerous complacency is. It shows me that I can't think that it's alright for me to stop going to meetings. It's not okay to take my will back. This program has saved my life and it will continue to do so as long as I show up and work the steps. Don't let your thinking get you back to using. Don't think that just because you have some time clean it's ok to stay stagnate. Keep moving forward. Always put recovery first. You're life is on the line. You're worth it. You're needed on this earth.
