The 5 Elements

Known as the five classical elements, they represent different aspects of nature and the universe. Each element has its own unique energy and symbolism, and understanding these can help you harness their power in your own spiritual practice. The Five Elements are Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit. Each of these elements is associated with a specific direction, season, and energy. The elements are also connected to the four cardinal points of the compass. You may find that certain elements resonate with you more than others.   

Earth: 

The Earth element is associated with stability, grounding, and abundance. In spell work, you can use the Earth element to manifest material wealth, stability, physical body, and the natural world. The Earth element is often represented by rocks, crystals, and gemstones, as well as plants and animals. It is said to be the element that helps us connect with the physical world and our primal instincts. To work with the Earth element, you might choose to spend time in nature, meditate with crystals, or create an altar with natural materials. Some correspondences for the Earth element in spell work include: 

Crystals: Green adventurine, moss agate, and jade. 

Herbs: Dandelion, patchouli, and rosemary. 

Colours: Brown and green 

Astrology: Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn  

Tarot: Pentacles 

Air: 

The Air element is associated with communication, transformation, intellectualism and creativity. It is associated with the mind, thought processes, and the realm of ideas.  The Air element is often represented by birds, feathers, and incense smoke. It is said to be the element that helps us connect with our higher selves and the spiritual realm. To work with the Air element, you might practice visualization, journaling, or perform a ritual with incense or feathers. Some correspondences for the Air element in spell work include:  

Crystals: Clear quartz, blue lace agate, and Citrine  

Herbs: Lavender, peppermint, and sage 

Colours: Yellow and white 

Astrology:  Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius  

Tarot: Swords 

Fire: 

The Fire element is associated with passion, action, and transformation. It is associated with energy, vitality, and courage. In spell work, you can use the Fire element to manifest passion, creativity, and transformation. The Fire element is often represented by candles, bonfires, and lightning. It is said to be the element that helps us connect with our inner power and the power of the universe. To work with the Fire element, you might light candles, perform a bonfire ceremony, or practice energy work. Some correspondences for the Fire element in spell work include: 

Crystals: Carnelian, ruby, and sunstone 

Herbs: Cinnamon, ginger, and yarrow 

Colours: Red and orange 

Astrology: Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius 

Tarot: Wands 

Spirit: 

The Spirit element is associated with transcendence, the unknown, connection, and the divine. In spell work, you can use the Spirit element to promote spiritual connection, meditation, and transcendence. The Spirit element is often represented by prayer, meditation, and the void. It is said to be the element that helps us connect with the divine source of all creation. To work with the Spirit element, you might practice meditation, prayer, or engage in a spiritual practice that resonates with your beliefs. Some correspondences for the Spirit element in spell work include: 

Crystals: Quartz, selenite, and amethyst 

Herbs: Frankincense, myrrh, and sage  

Colours: White and gold

Water: 

Water is the element of emotions, intuition, and healing. It is associated with the flow of life, the subconscious mind, and the cycles of nature. The Water element is often represented by oceans, rivers, and rain. It is said to be the element that helps us connect with our deepest feelings and the energy of the universe. To work with the Water element, you might take a ritual bath, work with divination tools, or spend time near a body of water. Some correspondences for the Water element in spell work include: 

Crystals: Aquamarine, Moonstone, Fluorite, Pearl, Opal 

Herbs: Aloe Vera, Rosemary, Chamomile 

Colours: Blue, Green, Grey 

Astrology: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces 

Tarot: Cups

In modern spirituality, the talk of healing the personality(commonly known as the ego) is familiar to everyone. But what about the practice of healing, and not merely the ideal of it? And what is healing anyway since we’re here? To heal means to repair a thing which has been injured. In acknowledging that an individual is engaged in healing, there is an automatic confession of injury/disease in the psyche. And how does the injury manifest? No matter how you slice it, some form of ignorance in our own thinking and feeling, which lead to actions that resulted in unpleasant traumatic experience. But to merely say with words that you are healing, and label it a “process”, to my way of thinking, seems very passive, like sustaining an open physical wound while waiting for the body‘s natural though potentially drawn out healing process, as opposed to applying natural medicine which will speed up the recoup exponentially. Healing is like physical exercise— you don’t get into shape by fantasizing—only by implementing methods which yield consistent results. If you want to make a real change in your psyche, find a method which works for you, and commit to it until you witness change in your psyche with regard to the specific condition(s) being addressed. I use a Hermetic method, derived from the book Elemental Equilibrium, by Virgil (see slide to the far right) that requires introspection upon the psyche—-recording at least 100 toxic traits and 100 beneficial traits of the soul, then assigning elemental correspondence to each trait, which serves to erect an observable image of the soul in character form, much like the Natal Chart. If I discover a new toxic trait, I make record of it, and schedule it’s extermination. The intention is to establish an equilibrium between these elemental forces so that the personality is not inclined towards one extreme over another, but rather, occupying a middle ground of balanced electromagnetic energy. Then, using various techniques, such as autosuggestion, food impregnation and cold water washing, I banish the toxic traits, and simultaneously cultivate the noble traits. This practice works for me and many others. Some prefer the chakra method. Some psychically gifted individuals prefer a more shamanistic method. Whatever method you use, make sure it’s practical. If not, 10 years later you’ll be experiencing triggers that you thought you eradicated long ago. Key word—‘thought’. The wise maxim tells us to •Know Thy Self•, not Think Thy Self. ‘Know Thy Self’ as a cryptic expression is informing the initiate of a need to harmonize the soul. Best of success to all who try:::

I've mentioned the 5 elements in passing a few times, most notably when I talked about the 8 trigrams and the 4 ( or 5) Guardian Beasts, but I haven't gone into detail about them. That changes now!

Most westerners (or anyone that's watched Avatar) are familiar with the 4 elements: earth, water, fire, and air. These were more popular in the west having been codified by Greek philosophers. It's not that they didn't show up in Asia, as they were popular in India and their neighbors. However that part of the world has a significant cultural identity to East Asian countries like China. As such, the Chinese idea of the 5 elements, or the Wuxing, is more common in those regions.

Wuxing, literally meaning 'moving star,' refers to the 5 major planets: Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Mercury, and Venus. As is implied by that name the 5 elements were each closely tied to a corresponding planet. Jupiter is wood, Mars is fire, earth is Saturn, Mercury is water, and Venus is metal. For those familiar with JttW, this is why the deities of Mercury and Mars Wukong seeks for help in the incident with the Rhino King are water and fire gods respectively.

The order you place the elements in is important as well, as each element reacts differently with the others in what are called cycles. First, there's the strengthening cycle: wood feeds fire, fire makes earth, earth bears metal, metal collects water, and water grows wood. Note that it does not matter which element begins the cycle as long as the rest are in the correct order. There are also the weakening (wood, water, metal, earth, fire), regulating/overacting (wood, earth, water, fire, metal), and counteracting (wood, metal, fire, water, earth) cycles that each have the elements play off each other in different ways for different purposes.
