I can't keep quiet about this anymore

I'm not one for discourse or drama but I need to say something!

It is NOT wrong for a 19 year old and a 25 year old to be in a relationship AS LONG as they treat each other well and love each other.

Keith and Shiro are FICTIONAL characters and both over 18. So why does my sister, who ships them, get death threats and hateful anon messages? Why do people go around and tell other fans she is a pedophile? Why do people send her FUCKING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY just to trigger her?

They know. They FUCKING KNOW that she is a surviver AND DO SHIT LIKE THIS? How dare they? This. Is. Not. FUCKING. Okay.

Why would a surviver ship this if it was underage oder pedo in any way? Are antis really that fucking stupid?

Rage is Exhilarating; Joy is Sustaining.

I said I was going to go out on a walk, but instead I’m gonna contribute to the discourse about That Blog, and That List. I have my priorities in order.

So, TL;DR, I came into the YOI fandom partly as a refuge from my Twitter feed. Part of what made me realize I needed to step back from Twitter was the way that the short communication form tended to boil issues down to all-or-nothing snippets, and the way that righteous fury over a cause--even (and often) a good cause--could create this sense of dark mania and excitement.

Here’s the thing: it felt good to react against the injustices of the world, whether real or perceived. It was exhilarating to be angry and talk about these things, and retweet other voices. It makes you feel like you’re a part of something important, like you have something to contribute to the world. It’s exhilarating to confront an ignorant person on the systemic sexism in video games, or the exclusionary elements of Taylor Swift’s type of feminism, or the way someone’s fave is problematic. It’s a fight, and for a while it feels like a good fight. It very often is. That’s where I think a lot of people in this fandom are coming from, and I see it partially as a function of age and maturity, because I’ve been there. I’ve been on those breathless crusades. But if you do this, it’s very easy to become angry all the time about everything. And being angry all the time doesn’t change the world; it just changes you, and always for the worse.

Rage is a fire. It will burn you up.

There’s something about the sentence your fave is problematic which I think people often forget, and it’s the word fave. It’s the same thing that trips up people who are confronted with their privilege for the very first time. Your fave is problematic, sure; but it’s still allowed to be your fave. The important thing isn’t stamping out all problematic elements forever for absolutely everyone; it’s about recognizing them, sitting with them, understanding how they are intertwined with the good bits of the very same piece of media.  It’s about being aware, the same way you need to be aware of white privilege. In both cases, if you let that part consume you, and if you mistake that discomfort for the real work and start trying to consume and control other people, it will stop you in your tracks and prevent true forward motion.

It’s uncomfortable. But discomfort is part of life. It’s far more interesting to learn to make friends with it than to turn your back and cast it as simply evil or wrong.

You are allowed to enjoy things even if they’re problematic. You’re allowed to enjoy the problematic things, too, as long as you’re aware of them, and other people should be granted the same respect. Policing people isn’t going to bring you joy; it’s just going to keep fueling the rage. Are there times when things should be called out? Yeah, absolutely. But this shit is complicated. It is not easy. It is not easy. It will never be easy.

The world is a scary, shitty place right now. There are times when we can and absolutely should be angry. But rage will only take you so far if you don’t have a way to replenish yourself, and that’s where joy comes in. If something brings you joy, then revel in it, even if there are problematic elements in the work itself, because joy is what will propel us forward and help make the world better. Don’t mistake anger for momentum; it’s joy that gives us the energy and strength to face the world. It doesn’t feel as immediate as rage, but it’s so much more important. Cultivate joy. Let it make you smile. Let it consume you with giddiness and make you cry from how overwhelming your feelings are. Look at the problematic elements and nod to them: I see you. I understand the problems here. I know what to do to push back against the systemic issues that have made you. But you are not everything. And then go back to joy, and let others do the same. It’s the kindest thing you can do in a world that is in desperate need of kindness, more than anything else.

What is an “anti”?

we are real people in the other side of the computer, not a fictional character. and we are aaron stans! we don’t feel comfortable with robron, everyone of us have their own reasons. some of us are triggered bc of the dynamic of their relationship, some of us just think it’s wrong to romanticize abuse.

But if they don’t ship robron, does that mean they want Aaron to be miserable?

no!!! the opposite!!! we think (and we saw on canon) that aaron is not really happy with robert. even though they have some happy moments, we think aaron would be better without him. we actually do want aaron happy!

Why shouldn’t we reblog from them? Are they really making posts just to upset us?

actually, no. we make posts for ourselves. yes, some posts are to prove some points we talk about. same as some of you did, really! for example, a really close friend of mine who i really love, posted a gifset about how other couples’d had cheating storylines, to prove a point. no one considered that mean. we are just doing the same!!

@dingleflaherty. talking about perfect gifs and clever posts!! you know, think what you want. when i first talked to guro i was a robron shipper myself and she was kinder than most of the people i have ever talked to in the robron fandom. she is an amazing person, who helped me more than i can really say when i was struggling with my own feelings. i can’t even say how wonderful of a human being she is.

@shadowhuntersgay. god, gabe is so clever and so funny!!! if you are wondering how to apply a meme to aaron, you will always find the answer on his blog. amazing gifs too!!! he never fails to make me smile. another human being too good for this world. But I thought they were all monsters…?

we are not! shocking. we are humans. we make mistakes and sometimes we hurt other people. but we aren’t the monsters that most people seem to think we are.

we aren’t saint eithers. but then again, no one in this fandom is.

we are accused of bullying. yesterday, someone from the robron fandom made a post and they mentioned some of our urls. so… when we do things like that is bullying, but when you do them… is okay? and on the urls they mentioned, it wasn’t mine. so some people told me “that’s because you’re nice”. and that’s true. i try to be nice to everyone. but… all of the people i mentioned before are nice too? they are good people, you know. some of the posts i saw between yesterday and today really hurt me. not because of the posts themselves, but because some of my friends have liked them. and that really, really hurt. and i became really angry about it, and i thought “what’s the point on being nice, if people will always see me as the bad guy just because i’m an anti?”. and i keep getting hate from anons, and people keep making posts about me, and my friends keep liking them. so you know, when you think about it, about how much it hurts, can you really blame any of the antis for becoming “bitter” and “petty”? they have been in this situation for two years. they got hate, so much more hate that i’ve ever gotten, and not only their “friends” liked that kind of posts, there were posts against them that were made by their own “friends”. think about how hurt and agry you would be, after being bullied that much, and think if you wouldn’t have the right to snap after that. because today i almost snapped. but i don’t want to be like that, because that’s not who i am. but yes, i understand other antis being like that. i do think they have the right of being this bitter.

so, if you think they are monsters, please block them and stay away from their blogs, instead of sending them hate. and if we are friends and you think they are monsters, please unfollow me, because remember, i’m just as much of a monster as they are.

there's so much y'all are "anti" against these days and like, that's fine, opinions are fine, but you gotta stop referring to it all as "anti" for short, like.....which of the three dozens antis are you referring to? then there's "antianti" for some of these things and you shorten it to that and expect people to know what you mean but.....only people in your circle know what you mean......stop. there has to be a better way
