Has anybody considered how fucked it would be to do a crossover between the autons and the cybermen like. Imagine being tortured and stuffed into a metal lined plastic shell with no emotion. Basically turned into an animatronic version of yourself.

The Autons, the Nestene Consciousness, The Silurians, a parallel Earth, an evil Machine, The Master, and The Axos? Three's Era TRULY bringing it when it comes to bringing in fun, new villains even if the plots themselves are eh.

So it begins!

I was explaining to a co-worker this morning that I never appreciated Christopher Eccleston as a kid because David Tennant was my first Doctor, and I always found 9 to too serious compared to 10's high energy. But after just one episode of my rewatch, I already appreciate him so much more. (More of this to come when I talk about S1 E2.)

Immediate thoughts about this episode: I love Jackie Tyler, the classic Murray Gold music, and the introduction to Rose as this shouty London shop worker who isn't afraid to tell the Doctor he's a weirdo.

I especially loved the hilariously bad peak-2005 visual effects like the building on fire and Mickey being swallowed by a stretchy bin. His plastic face (that Rose somehow doesn't notice) tops it all off nicely.

One thing that struck me: it's v weird seeing Rose for the first time, knowing now how important she'll become, and knowing what fate lies ahead of her. But I'll try not to think about that too much otherwise I might cry.

The Autons (2nd Appearance) and The Master (1st Appearance): The Terror of the Autons

Yes, that’s right! The third most canonically iconic villain has made their appearance and plays a great foil to the Doctor’s heroics. That’s right, it’s the Master:

Played by the charming and charismatic, Richard Delgado, this renegade Timelord doesn’t want to explore help the galaxy unless it benefits him and his quest for power and chaos. A master hypnotist who can bend people to his will and a man who isn’t afraid to using weapons or hurting people, we get to see that Timelords can be dangerous and with the threat of time travel we see what a force they can be. Too bad that the Master decides to carry out his plan on Earth, but as we learn part of that is because of the opportunity and part of that is in fact to antagonize the Doctor whom we learn is an old acquaintance of his.

The Master is after one of the Nestene meteorites that U.N.I.T. has put up on display in a museum? I’m with the Doctor, Brigadier, what were you thinking? After stealing it he makes his way to a carnival to recruit the help of a carnival leader for security protection. He then makes his way to a large broadcast tower, miniature’s the technician (something I forgot he could do so early on), so then he can use the Nestene meteorite to contact the consciousness and bring them back to Earth.

From there he goes to one of the local plastic companies and hypnotizes the lead of the company to allow him to make Autons, of course. It’s an interesting team up and the first time two enemies have come together in the show. But Rex Farrel’s advisor and family friend doesn’t like it and threatens to tell his father about the mishandlings of the companies. However, the Master interferes and kills him with an inflatable plastic sofa:

After learning of his partners death and his son’s mishandlings, Farrel’s father gets involved and surprises the Master by not succumbing to his hypnotic tricks. But that’s okay, the Master has a plan B which involves a very creepy doll that awakes to heat and eventually kills Farrel, senior:

Now while the Master is busy plotting and scheming away, U.N.I.T. has become aware of the man’s actions since he stole the meteorite and also a timelord (with no name) shows up and warns the Doctor of the Master’s plan. This allows them to start tracking them. Though the Doctor’s new assistant Jo Grant, gets more than she bargains for as she is caught and hypnotized by the Master to then try and bomb U.N.I.T. Still, shaken after the event, she still manages to help the team track the Master down.

But first they start with the circus and while it seems to spiral out of control, it does come in handy because the Doctor is able to locate the Master’s TARDIS and steal his dematerialization circuit. Essentially trapping and preventing the Master from leaving. This leads to a back and forth between the two with the Doctor at one point almost getting strangled by a plastic chord the Master is able to control over the phone:

Still, they don’t rack down the Master until he’s unleashed the Autons and some daisies that are causing people all over London to fall dead. But U.N.I.T. and the Doctor don’t give up and eventually track down this renegade. And at first all seems well as he eventually gives up after his large toy like autons fail to survive U.N.I.T.’s attack. But though it looks like a surrender, the Doctor isn’t so sure and soon its revealed that the Master is also a master of disguise, creating a mask over Farrel to make his ultimate escape. Though because he doesn’t have his dematerialization circuit, we all know its only time before he meets back up with the Doctor and a new scheme.

to the dreams i had last night which seemed to center on seeing , being around and hearing 13 and Yaz around where i live, where i went to school among other random people - talk, mention of Autons and the plastic / anti plastic business - them taking notice of me, having a reaction to me being Allison and that name in general - some tense aura but mainly good.

sense of weirdness, angst, comfort, not really adventure unless you count the other parts of my dreams where they weren't around

Ngl but the Autons were a lot scarier back in the days of Classic Who than they were in the revival.
