Would you rather fuck the demon core or the elephant’s foot?
Demon core
Elephant’s foot
ugh look at it surrounded by tungsten carbide neutron reflectors so fucking sexy
“Cottage core” “fairy core” “angel core” ok what about the demon core. The fucking. Plutonium demon core
sigh. It was only a matter of time before the nuclear history hyperfixations flooded into this blog...
anyway, about Nuclear history.
Have any of you guys heard about the demon core????? Because its literally insane.
It was a giant globe of plutonium created for the Manhattan project in 1945. SO it was gonna be used on Japan, but they surrendered so that meant they could use it for research.
Said research resulted in TWO yes TWO fatal accidents. They BOTH happened in Los Alamos. BOTH accidents were attempts at demonstrating that "Hey look at this massive sphere of plutonium and how its two seconds away from blowing all of us up!" in which the core was mishandled and resulted in it going supercritical (THIS IS REALLY BAD)
The first instance was because Daghlian (physicist) had dropped a tungsten carbide brick on it. The reason this fucked everything up is because the "rare conditions" for the core to go supercritical are the compression of the core-- which is what happened.
The core briefly went supercritical (identified with a bright blue flash) before Daghlian moved the brick away, but received a fatal dose of radiation. Luckily he was working alone (or rather, unluckily because I'm sure if he wasn't working alone (though a security guard was but 10 feet away) this might not have happened but whatever) He died 25 days post incident of acute radiation poisoning. (the security guard died 30 ish years later in his 60s)
The SECOND incident happened under very similar circumstances. So there's this guy Slotin and he was assigned to test how close the core was to criticality (because in its resting state, its subcritical but VERY close to becoming critical) so he has this protocol, if you can even call it that. Basically, the core is kept from killing everyone using a FLATHEAD SCREWDRIVER to keep things in the proper places. Its unapproved, but they trust him for some reason???? (not everyone did, one guy said that everyone in the room would die in a year if they kept doing this)
So imagine their surprise when one day they're lowering a component and the screwdriver slips and drops the component too far, and oh boy!! Flash of blue light!!! The core went supercritical again. In half a second, Slotin received a lethal dose. It took half a second to remove the component. This time though, there were other people with him. While Slotin died 9 days post incident, Graves (someone watching over Slotin's shoulder) was hospitalized and died 19 years later, his death was not necessarily related to the incident.
Most of the people involved in the second accident lived long lives, though its my PERSONAL belief that some of their deaths were related to the radiation.
So yeah, that's what happened with the Demon Core. I really like learning about nuclear history. I have so much to yap about omg.
