Hi! I hope you have been well! I was wondering if you had ever watched The Neon Demon. I just did last weekend. If you’ve seen it what were your thoughts on it?
Hi!
I have seen it, and I promise for everyone else that I’m not going to give anything away in my answer. No spoilers. It’s safe to keep reading.
I only ever heard complaints about The Neon Demon on social media, but I actually really liked it. It’s slow the way Audition is slow — where there’s an overall feeling of disquiet and anxiety but nothing overtly horrible happens until the end. A lot of people don’t like those sorts of horror movies — they want slashers that deliver blood and screams every 8 minutes — and I get it (it was slow, I admit) but there’s a lot of art in a movie that spends an hour quietly piling on terror before hammering it home.
It’s also not simply a horror movie. It’s social commentary. A lot of the best horror movies are: The Monster and The Babadook are about motherhood, Us is about identity/individualism, Midsommer is about belonging, the original Dawn of the Dead was about materialism/capitalism, etc. The Neon Demon is a comment on our consumption and exploitation of youth and beauty and also a little on the very American fear of failure/not being special. The movie does a really good job, I think, of balancing attraction and repulsion throughout. You’re drawn to the visual spectacle of the photo shoots and the beautiful people but also horrified by how vapid and calculating and insecure they all are.
Like I said earlier, I do think it could’ve been punched up a little bit to sharpen the pace/fear, but the last 20 minutes are worth the wait.
All I’m saying is thank god he is so cute and snuggly because he is teething and it’s awful.
Sitting down between two Great Danes-their determination to force cuddles upon people combined with their lack of understanding how large they are is hilarious.
