I loved this prompt for the second day of @sokaiweek! Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get the time to finish my written piece for today, which was a rewrite of an old fic of mine. I still plan on finishing it hopefully later this month, but for now, I do have an excerpt, which I hope you all enjoy!
The First Sunset
Excerpt Word Count: 503
“See? Doesn’t that feel so much better?!”
“It’s...weird…” Kairi decided.
“Hmm…” Sora rested his hands on his hips. In his long four years of life experience, “weird” was nowhere near the first word he’d use to describe the squelchy sensation of cool, wet sand beneath his feet and between his toes. He was about to open his mouth and list off all the other adjectives that would much better express what being barefoot on the beach, a very regular and normal thing out here on the Islands, was supposed to feel like, before Kairi let out a yelp.
“C-Cold!” Kairi cried out, quickly retreating from the small wave that had washed over the shore, the ocean water lapping away at their ankles.
“It’s just the sea, Kairi!” Sora explained, taking her tiny hand in his. “Remember? It’s the way we got here! Dad rowed us across it.”
“It’s cold,” Kairi repeated with a pout, though not without returning the grasp of his hand.
“Well, if you’re going to be Princess of the Pirates, you’re going to have to get used to it,” he chided, resting his free hand on his hip. His demeanor changed immediately when he noticed her averted gaze, her head bowed away from him. “Ah, but, you don’t have to be afraid! If you’re scared, me and Riku, we’ll be with you!” Despite Sora’s reassurances, the redheaded girl did not budge. “Uhh, Kairi? Is everything okay?”
“That’s pretty…” was what Kairi said when she finally responded. Momentarily confused, Sora followed her line of vision to find the object that had caught her eye.
“That’s a seashell,” Sora explained.
“A seashell?”
“Yeah! When the ocean washes up on the shore, sometimes it leaves those on the beach. That’s what Riku told me, anyway.”
“Are they dangerous?”
“Dangerous?” Sora responded ludicrously. “No way!” He let go of her hand to go and retrieve it. He dusted off as much sand as he could by the time he brought it back to present it to her. Her indigo eyes widened in awe as she examined it. Hesitantly, she reached out to touch it, her rosy fingertips savoring the feeling of its smooth enameled surface through the granules of wet sand still stuck to it.
“Do you want to keep it?” Sora finally asked.
“Can I?” she gasped, mouth agape at the suggestion.
“Well, yeah! Like I said, they wash up all the time.” Kairi’s lips lifted up into a smile, her hands outstretched. Sora was about to pass over the shell, when he suddenly paused. “Oh, wait a sec! I have an even better idea.”
“Huh?” But instead of a verbal response, Kairi was finding herself bowing her head as Sora’s arms reached over it.
“There we go!” He grinned. “The Princess of the Pirates needs her crown!”
It was a sight Sora would never forget: Kairi’s beaming face, the way her auburn hair danced in the seabreeze, and the way her seashell crown glowed under the sun’s red and golden rays.

Summary:
It was like coming home after being away for too long. It always had been, and honestly, James Bond hoped that setting foot in the hallowed halls of MI6 would always feel like coming home. But to be fair, he wasn’t anticipating a warm welcome this time. Given the circumstances of his last departure, the people he had walked away from, the people he had alienated because he was distracted by a pretty face, he expected a bit of a hostile reception. There were new faces as he made his way to M’s office, some of the younger ones saw him and spent a few minutes staring after him, whispering to each other that the prodigal son of MI6, the legendary rogue James Bond, had come home again.
Bookmarker's Notes:
Fabulous post-Spectre story which shows Q hesitant, but not ridiculously so, to let James back into his heart. C'mon: he has ReAsOnS + one of them is an interesting twist in the story. Q is a Holmes; James + John Watson were a thing back in the day; Watson's daughter Rosie is a delightful + real child; and the journey to the extended Watson-Holmes-Vernet-Bond family on Baker Street is a wonderFULL read from start to finish. #ThereAreSoManyWaysToBeFamily + this one is a treat. Mission + case bits are all done well. Won't say anything more because you, dear Reader, deserve to experience it for yourself too!
