The SECOND Best Trope Ever Showdown: Round 2, Side C, Poll 1
Which trope is BETTER?
Unreliable Narrator
The Lancer
Unreliable Narrator
A narrator who may not be telling the truth.
In most narratives, there's an element of trust that the person telling you the story is telling the truth, at least as far as they know it.
Propaganda:
It’s cool, interesting, and a fun way to learn your mc has been lying to you the entire story!
The Lancer
A character who usually is both a foil to the main character and/or leader of a group, but is also someone they trust, and who is usually treated as their second in command.
The Foil for a hero of the closely allied variety. In general, the Lancer will often form one half of a Red Oni, Blue Oni contrasting duo wi
Propaganda:
I love a good foil character in general! And also, a lot of times the character with the foil role is positioned as the hero's rival or even enemy- I really like that The Lancer is instead usually one of their closest allies (because even when they have some kind of rivalrous dynamic, it's almost always still based in friendship instead of being genuinely contentious). Two characters who in personality parallel and oppose each other but who recognize that they means they actually compliment each other and make each other stronger is so satisfying to me as a dynamic.
So I finished Camp Cretaceous the other day. It lost some momentum in the later seasons. There's only so many ways to escape dinosaurs, and ultimately them trying to stop evil plots is less compelling than a fight for survival.
All that said, it remained a strong show. Always having strong action, and managing to find clever ways to keep things novel. The romance is solid but not overbearing. However the true strength is the character work. The kids are all fully realized characters, whose reactions feel true without diving too much into angst. They are clever and grow and bond and it is all so great. Every one of them gets their own heroic solo moments (I am a big beliver that all main characters deserve one Wolverine in the sewers moment). But I also feel like I got a good handle on the relations between each of the characters as well as the broader group dynamics. The CampFam bonds than cracks than bonds than cracks than binds some more under the pressure of the situation but manage to come through it all. Some really fine work doomed by the binge bomb model of Netflix. Would reccomend it.
Shoutout as well to the small but consistent group of fans following my watch here on Tumblr.
“Purpose.”
Latch yourself onto it, like it is the only thing keeping you from drowning.
Let it move you, drive you to the places you were helpless to reach.
Inhale - let it fill your lungs, to remind you why you are alive.
Exhale - return it unto the world, so that it knows that you are alive.
Strike true - and never forget the purpose.

Lance is The Lancer
Okay, so I’ve known this since the series started, but I was trying to explain it and came across what I thought was some pretty interesting info about the trope. Join me, won’t you? (Source)
Let’s start with the definition:
The Foil for a hero of the closely allied variety.
In general, the Lancer will often form one half of a Red Oni, Blue Oni contrasting duo with the main character. While they may butt heads with The Leader, they're usually the Best Friend by the end of it all.
Sounds like our boy, right? But wait, there’s more!
If The Hero has No Social Skills, his Lancer is likely to be more levelheaded and a social person, or even the Morality Pet in extreme cases.
Red Oni, Blue Oni are also a popular combination. They know each others' tactics, they know when something is wrong, and they know when the other is Not Himself or saying Something They Would Never Say.
If The Hero works more from a state of passion when resolving problems, or is inspiring to his team, his Lancer tends to work harder, and in some but not all cases tends to be less popular. The Lancer in this context tends to think his way through challenges and through diligence eventually earns his team's respect for his obvious talents and successes.
In all these cases, The Leader is Shiro, The Hero is Keith, and The Lancer is, of course, Lance.
And it keeps getting better!
Just as Heroes Prefer Swords, The Lancer is often The Archer, The Gunslinger, or a literal Lancer, relying on firepower and distance. If everyone is a ranged fighter then expect The Lancer to explicitly be the best shot, or an Ace Pilot.
If The Hero and The Lancer have Elemental Powers, they will be complementary. If The Hero uses flames, The Lancer will probably use ice, electricity or water.
Yes~ DW did their homework.
Oh, but what’s this?
When worst comes to worst, The Lancer is the one person on the team who is likely to die for the cause. He's also the most likely member of the team to pull a Face Heel Turn and get turned to The Dark Side (though this usually doesn't last), or end up Brainwashed and Crazy by the Big Bad or the Evil Genius (and if this happens, either The Chick or The Hero will talk him out of it).
Wait, no. Go back, go back! Though, he has almost died a few times.
The article also mentioned our boy specifically (or, rather, Isamu)
GoLion did an interesting bit on this trope. While Isamu Kurogane was named LANCE by Voltron fans, he was not the original Lancer of the team. . . that job was temporarily held by Takashi Shirogane (Sven).
Ah ha! But Lance in VLD is definitely the Lancer.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

After having actually played with the child life-stage for an extended period of time, I continued to realize and take note of the lacking hairstyle options. It’s been a while since I did something like this...
So I made some quick conversions of some of my recent hair releases for adults for kids as well :P
I made three precisely, and I’ll be releasing them over the next day or so :o
Enjoy :D
