The Mender
The library is a stranger place than most on campus - the wyrms which consume words, corners where time doesn’t flow. The librarians themselves are, by and large, human - the circulation workers, the reference staff, the team in technical services, and the administration are all thoroughly human. They can answer, by and large, any question any student puts to them.
Except when they can’t.
When they can’t, they gently lead the student to a door - usually the exit.
By and large.

b a c k g r o u n d .
Once upon a time there was a ferocious monster that plagued the West family. The monster was lazy, and wrathful. Striking out blindly when provoked, and dealing unjust punishments. The only thing that soothed the monster was magical potions that made him feel like he was on a cloud. Or a wave. And while on this potion he felt as powerful as the giants from the sky, and there was no bean stock to take down. The only safety to be found was in the arms of a tarnished knight. But it wasn’t really a monster, or a magical potion, or even a tarnished knight.
It was a normal Tuesday night, and the monster was her father Ashton Quinton West. The potion was alcohol, and the tarnished knight was her brother Kace Tristian West. Most of the girl’s childhood was filled with covering bruises and learning how to act fine. Escaping to a world where everything was nonsense. Nothing was like how it truly was, because everything was what it wasn’t. And that’s why it was perfect. It was a perfect distraction that she would eagerly share in hushed whispers to her brother. The nightmare had truly begun when Willow Adrian West had enough and left the two with the face that haunted Braelynn’s dreams. With a hushed whisper and a soft kiss to the forehead, that was the last she saw and heard of the woman who offered small comforts in the blackened smog that was her life. The only beacon that was left was Kace, and Braelynn was fine with that. No matter what she knew he would keep her safe, he always had in the past. Taking the first hit, sometimes taking them all. It was on one such night that Ashton believed he wasn’t stoppable. One such night that Braelynn received the brunt of the hit.
One such night that was her brothers seventeenth birthday. The night was a blur, she barely remembered any of it. One minute she was sitting at the table, her father entering the room after calling out to the two. The next moment she was flying across the room, in any other situation it would feel magical. To be floating above the ground, feeling the wind whipping past her. But this moment was anything but magical. It was terrifying. The last thing she remembers about the night was pain, her hair wet, and an awful metallic scent wafting all around her before everything went black.
A dream so wonderful that everything made sense. That was what Braelynn was having. It was a nice dream, she was wearing a dress she’d seen once in a store that she would never be able to afford. Kace was there with his signature smile. Was it really signature if she’d barely seen it? Braelynn didn’t know, but he was smiling nonetheless. She recalled in the dream that there was a feast being held. People were cheering that the beast was finally dead. There was a celebration lasting about a week long. And then suddenly everything was bright. There were faces around her that came through as blurs.
She wasn’t sure how long had passed before she opened her eyes again. All she knew was what she’d heard people saying. “The poor thing, I wonder how she’s doing.”, along with the questions of what she’d done to get such a nasty injury. But Braelynn didn’t know. She wasn’t sure exactly what had happened. The last thing she remembered was Kace’s birthday. Even that was a blur to her, so many things didn’t make sense to the girl about the night. The nightmare was over however, and the two would live with Willow’s parents whom they’d never met.
The nightmare was over and Braelynn couldn’t be more excited to get back to her life. Or well, her new life. She’d laughed with her friends, made jokes with Poppy, and helped plan social events. Like always, if the nasty comments began she would leave. Some things would never change, and that was one of them. The girl loved Poppy like she was her own sister but she was venomous. That venom scared her at times, but she never felt it directed at herself. Perhaps it was because of how close her brother was with Poppy’s boyfriend. They had just finished celebrating her birthday, so Braelynn didn’t think much when Poppy, and Eve didn’t show up to class. Figuring they wanted to take the day to relax. Braelynn would never find out though. Poppy was gone so was Eve, and she wasn’t even sure if they were ever coming back.
p e r s o n a l i t y .
A gentle heart guiding the girl through a story crafted to protect herself. That’s what she was. A naïve girl who just wanted everything to be alright for everyone around. With a gentle voice and a soft demeanor, she fears she won’t be able to make the change necessary. Or even worse, that one day she’ll realize that the dream never ended. That the monster was never slain. That the nightmares would never stop plaguing her mind. She was the opposite of the people you would see hanging out with Poppy. And perhaps that was the funny part of it. Another part, the darker part would whisper to her that the girl kept her around like she’d kept Eve around. Strictly for image purposes.
When the pieces of your heart scattered, I was the scavenger. I searched until I found the last piece. When the pieces of my heart shattered, you were the hammer. You smashed until you destroyed the last of me.
