What If My Ancestors Hate Me? 6.09.26

The night-time seems to be the moment when everything that I’ve done in my life haunts me. My regrets, fears, and heartache consume me like a lion its prey. And amongst those things, my heart tends to soften at the idea of hoodoo.

As I grow older, I recognise all of the traditions and things that my family has done that they cover with the quilt of Christianity. I think the idea of it brings them comfort and a will to live. Yet my soul does not yearn for Christianity; rather, it wants to break free and soar towards where the ancestors lie. I know that they tend to be intertwined, but to me, Abrahamic religion belongs nowhere near something as precious as the ancestors’ blood that runs through my veins.

As simple as it’s said, I could just start. Venerating my ancestors to help me navigate through the dark forest that we call life. But the issue doesn’t lie in my will, but rather my fear. The fear of them having no will to help me in this life because of the disappointing deeds I have done. What if they hate me and no happiness comes from what my heart and soul have been pulled towards my entire life, even without my knowledge? So, I don’t, because I have become selfish. Selfish enough to deny my own self happiness to aid my anxieties in persevering.

Overthinking and anxiety are like the vernacular in my mind; I speak it fluently. And that language stops me from wanting to see what I am missing in my life. How my ancestors could steer me in directions I could only dream of right now. Yet I continue to let the heavy weight of my fear hold me back from the sigh of relief that could potentially come from allowing myself to push my doubts to the forefront where they could be erased. And I wouldn’t wish this feeling on my worst enemy.
