Request: darry has a roofing accident. soda calls and y/n and tells her to come to hospital because darry had an accident and work, and it’s just her comforting soda and pony, and ofc darry turns out all fine and dandy
“There’s been an accident” You heard Sodapop whisper into the receiver, his voice was choked and you knew he was trying to keep strong. “It’s Darry... He’s been hurt. We’ re at the hospital.”
That was all he needed to say. You hung up the phone with an “I’m coming, Soda” and you left that house like the devil himself was after you.
You got to the hospital within 10 minutes, finding Sodapop cradling a crying Ponyboy in his arms.
“Y/N” Sodapop called out, rising from his chair. Ponyboy let go of him so he could greet you. And when he reached your embrace, that was it... The flood gates that Sodapop had been so focussed on building to help keep Pony calm came crashing down.
“Soda” You whispered softly, grasping onto him for all your worth. “How is he?”
“He’s hurt real bad, Y/N. He was in a bad way - I don't know what happened. They had to restart his heart - he went into shock or something. I don’t understand. He was fine 3 hours ago. He was fine! He was cooking me and Pone breakfast. We got into a fight - I... Y/N. What if the last words we said were angry words?” He blubbered. “What if he dies.”
“Shhh” You hushed, noticing that Ponyboy’s crying just got worse. “Come on.”
You grabbed his hand and you sat in the middle of the two boys, pulling them closer to you.
“Hey, he’s gonna be fine.” You said softly, staring sternly into Sodapop’s eyes. You grasped his cheek tenderly. “He’s gonna be fine, you dig?”
“The doctor’s won’t tell us shit. He could be dead in there for all I know.” He cussed. “You can’t tell me he’s gonna be fine! Don’t you dare tell me that!”
Sodapop needed to cool off - you knew that... so you didn’t even try to stop him as he walked off into the corridors of the hospital.
“You okay there, little buddy?” You asked the youngest Curtis brother as you rubbed his shoulder reassuringly.
“I’m scared, Y/N.” He admitted, not wanting to look you in the eye. “You know the last thing I said to Darry this morning was ‘I hate you’. We got into an argument over homework - and I told him I hated him. I don’t hate him Y/N, I don’t. So why did I say that? What if the last words I said to him is that I hate him?”
“Hey, honey, you can’t think like that, okay? Darry knows that you love him. Ya’ll are brothers and sometimes brothers say things that they don’t mean, but that don’t mean you love him any less. When he wakes up, and honey, he’ll wake up, tell him that you love him... “ Ponyboy’s eyes were getting heavy, you could see just how tired the poor kid was from all the crying so you laid him down in your lap and continued to talk. “When my daddy died the last thing I said to him was that I never wanted to see him again... an hour later he was killed in a car wreck. I never forgot that those were the last words I said to him and I wonder if he died thinking that I hated him. But since his accident, I make sure I tell my momma and brothers and even Sodapop that I love them before I leave the house. just in case those will be the last words that will ever be said between us. And when Darry wakes up you'll have the opportunity to do the same thing”
Ponyboy had drifted off, his breathing was ragged and uneven as tiny little hiccoughs left over from his cries erupted through his chest.
A few moments later Sodapop walked over to you, sheepish and awful sorry as he rubbed the back of his. He took a seat next to you and smiled softly at his little baby brother that was laid in your lap.
“He’s going to be okay.” Sodapop said. “I spoke to the doctor. He’s gonna be fine.”
“I told you so.” You smiled, lacing your fingers between his.
“I know and you don’t need to apologise. I get it.” You reassured
He leaned in, snuggling up to your side, his head settling into the crook of your neck. “I don’t know what I would do without you, Y/N. I don’t deserve a friend like you.”
“Hush now” You ran your fingers through his greased hair.
You could feel his breath tickling your neck, your skin flushed causing tiny goose bumps to rise. You couldn’t help but think just how close his lips were from yours. Your heart beat a hundred miles per hour and you urged yourself to stop thinking like this... this wasn’t the time to have thoughts like this about your best friend.
“I mean it.” He said lowly, and from the corner of your eye you could see him staring at you... his hand drifted up and cupped your cheek.
You turned to stare back at him and found him inching in closer to you... Your eyes shut as you braced yourself for the kiss.
The gang came scuffling in and you pulled away as quickly as it started.
“Is Darry okay?” Two-Bit asked, followed by Johnny, Dally and Steve.
“Aww hell, nobody can kill Superman. He ain’t dead Dal!”
