I barely survived her the first time. There has always been this magnetic draw to her, a temptation I have never understood. I have hated her, loved her, mourned with her and laughed with her. When she is gone from me, I do not recall all the bad times, only the good. It draws me in every time.

🍫 The Thirteen Kingdoms by @inky-duchess are a series of novels following her fascinating casts of characters as they deal with love, political intrigue, and an incestuous family trying to reclaim the past. Her writing style and prose is magnificent to read and her characters are absolutely fascinating to read about. The worldbuilding is rich with its variety of cultures and I love how she takes inspiration from history to create, not only the world, but her characters as well.

So I know I haven't been posting a lot of TTK content for a while but with good reason. I'm 5 chapters away from being fully finished, edited and everything. I'm really not ready to say goodbye but the babies no longer need me 😭

Sunset is creeping in the diamond-paned windows, everything is soon kisser with sunlight, golden-orange like honey on a warm autumn evening. The ocean churns afar, shimmering like liquid light, dotted with the shadows of black ships upon the sunset tide. The sky is slashed with light and dark, the clouds like bloodstains across a golden banner unfurled in the distant heavens.

The girl I was may have flushed in the face of her words. I don't flinch away from her, holding her gaze. "I have been doing well so far."

"So I have heard." the Dowager fixes her gaze over me, her squid-dark eyes seemingly reading the depths of my very soul. "But treacherous lords and a broken land are not difficult to win over. It is no feat and you know that. You must face the truth, child and ask yourself an important question. The question is not whether you can take the city, for there is no doubt you can, we are undefended and you have the numbers. The question is whether you can keep it and what you are willing to do to ensure it does not slip from your grasp."
