Tenth square, at last!
Science fiction: The Three-Body Problem / 三体 by Cixin Liu, tr. Ken Liu
Recommended by @mostlyonthefloor, whose copy I have kept for far too long. I'll post it back tomorrow. You were right, it's really good, but damn, that was a hard read which required a lot more focus than I mostly have available right now. Not necessarily because of the science, I think, more because it's a writing style that I'm not very used to — somewhat stilted? Very appropriate for the book, though. Ye Wenjie was a fantastic character.
Oh, and apparently it's been filmed? I'd have assumed that was impossible.

"I don't want to be a spy. I just want to prove you're an idiot!"

"Other than the undiscovered country beyond death from which no one has ever returned, the place she wanted to be the most was this peak, separated from the rest of the world. Here, she felt a sense of security that had long eluded her." --Cixin Liu, The Three-Body Problem
if i had a nickel for every cool alien sci-fi series that turned out to be about game theory i'd have two nickels. which isn't a lot but
