One genuinely clever trick Sienkiewicz does in "With Fire and Sword" in particular is the way his narrator, though it is a 3rd person and theoretically an all-knowing one, very openly shares the perspective and biases of the 17th century Polish nobility. This gets you into the headspace of how these people view the unfolding events, but the facts as presented still make it very hard to miss that the Cossacks are, at least at the start of the conflict, 100% in the right, both morally and legally. He does kinda lose it in the sequels, we never get the same consideration given to the Swedes' reasons for going to war, and we definitely don't get that for the Ottoman Turks (let's be honest, Sienkiewicz was more viciously islamophobic than any of his characters, who spend their lives fighting side by side with Tatar mercenaries, would be likely to have been). But there's a reason every Pole to whom the first book of the Trilogy is the first exposure to the history of Chmielnicki's Uprising (which is most of us, I think) goes "Damn, the Zaporozhian Host did have a fucking point, fuck us Lachs", and I don't think it's an accident on the writer's part.
