THE WIGHT 

Decided to draw my Century Age of Ashes character, a marauder known as The Wight, They/He, they're really cool and I like them and I also like this game a lot

Hello!  Me again, but with a shorter post this time!  I was just rereading Chapter Seven, and…I was thinking that the Wight might actually be the Angel?

Mina asked three questions: Where are you now; what’s going on in Mayview; and what’s the power that the Witch was seeking after.  Dr Burger said that the answer to her questions is that the creature trying to destroy them is called a Wight.

With the first question, the safe answer is that Dr Burger (who deserves so much better than this) is trapped with the Wight.  The others are…tricky.

If this Wight is behind all of the chaos in Mayview, I think it’s likely that it’s someone we’ve already met before  - or at least, that we’ve been introduced to - , and that has significant influence over the town.  It also has to be very powerful (after all, it freaked out Boss Leader and the Witch was apparently seeking some kind of power from it).  The Angel fits that description.  What’s more, the Wight looks rather…feminine to me?  Correct me if I’m wrong, but I see long, flowing hair in this picture.

Furthermore, we don’t know what The Angel looks like.  It doesn’t even appear to its followers!  If it’s intentionally hiding its appearance, that makes me think that what it looks like is somehow important.

On a related note, The Angel’s dialogue is…strange.  It’s multicolored and has wings coming out of the speech bubbles.  Whenever dialogue boxes are unusual, that’s a sign to watch out.  It’s entirely possible that her voice is important in some way - and Boss Leader ordered Walker to not even let the Wight speak.  Bubbles are placed around everyone so they can’t hear - so of course the wight’s voice is important.

At first, my assumption was that the wight’s voice was like a banshee’s, and that it’d kill you if you heard it, but thinking about The Angel gave me a different idea:  A compelling voice.  Doorman and Nin (well, mostly Doorman - Nin was rather sensible about the matter) practically fall over themselves when listening to her, almost to the point of it being…kind of creepy.  They’re steadfastly loyal to someone they’ve never even seen - and Forge, too, offers up that same loyalty before he’s even arrived in Mayview.  So, assuming that the Wight and The Angel are one and the same, Boss Leader’s precautions would have been to prevent someone forcing them all to work for her.  Being able to inspire loyalty is dangerous in any situation but for the very head of the Consortium?  You have a creature that could take over the spectrals in weeks!

When talking to Doorman/Nin, there’s this exchange - 

- , heavily implying (if not outright stating) that whatever they’re planning, this isn’t the first time.

Finally, it’s implied that both the Wight and The Angel are seen as sources of power by outsiders.  Forge worked for The Angel unquestioningly because she could provide something for him no one else could, and it’s insinuated that the Witch was seeking power from the Wight - possibly by stealing or using it as an energy source.

Folklore: The Wight

“Please, you must help me...” 

A pathetic wretch endlessly wanders the Territory, and occasionally beyond its borders. Seers and those with the gifts StarClan has given them are warned many times of this creature - to never acknowledge it, to refuse its pleas, to ignore its wails of anguish and desperation and get away as soon as possible. 

The exact image of this being varies slightly per family, but the general description is that of a bedraggled, skeletal cat with patches of fur missing and skin stretched so tight over its pitiful frame that it appears to be cracking. It wobbles with every step, weak and hungry but too obsessed with its campaign to stop and hunt. It is even said to be nearly translucent, having faded away to a mere echo of what it used to be, which was doubtlessly a healthy warrior, perhaps from before the Union. 

Its method of troubling the live is thus: a cat on its own, and with the power to see into the afterlife, will be approached so quickly that the Wight seems to just appear in front of its target. It will never ask if the cat is a seer or otherwise gifted; it just knows from its heart that the cat has what they need.

When the cat is made aware of its presence, the Wight will begin crying for assistance in a thin, barely-there voice - you see, there’s someone it’s looking for, and they died so long ago, and it must see them again, to know that they’re well, to give one last message of love, so they know they are cared for and remembered, please, just one message, that’s all, it can take the cat to the Lighthouse and they can dream together there, just one message, it’s begging you...

The immediate response, as all seer mentors warn their apprentices, is to refuse, and to keep refusing, even as the Wight’s voice grows louder and higher, even as it keens in shrieks of unbearable grief. The seer must say ‘no’ however many times it takes for the Wight to cry out in anguish and run to look for someone else to help them. 

Because, if they say ‘yes’, and allow the Wight to follow them to the Lighthouse, they will find themselves in an unhappy situation. 

You see, the Wight’s loved one does not return the care they are given - they will respond with scorn and disgust for a sin long forgotten by the Wight. In fact, in some stories, they have long since disappeared into faraway skies to escape the onslaught of messages and pleads to speak with its object of hatred again. No matter what, no matter how hard a seer tries to help, this will never change. 

And if the Wight is told this, let’s just say that it does not take it well.
