regarding that anon that talked about how they didn’t give MJ her full potential in this trilogy, I don’t think that’s a critic only about her character. Like i’ve seen so many people complain about Peter being too childish, Aunt may not getting enough screentime, MJ’s storyline being very superficial, etc. And Idk if im in the minority here but I think it’s that way for a reason, like the same way it took 3 movies to get Tom’s spidey to what they did with Tobey and Andrew in their movies. I think Marvel decided to do it that way because they knew fans were tired of all the reboots, hence why they casted a very young Tom (he was 18 at the time) so that he can be spider-man for a lot of time. Same with Zendaya, Jacob and anyone else they would want to add to the cast. Now I know Tom doesn’t have an active contract with Sony/Marvel to play spider-man, but tom and z must definitely know NWH wasn’t their last time playing the characters.
I personally believe the future negotiations might be how many appearances they make, the storylines they will give the characters, their pay, etc. And I absolutely see Tom going more for appearances in other movies and maybe a solo movie where they can conclude his Peter and he can pass the mantle to Miles. But yeah this criticism fans have over Z’s MJ is something that i’m assuming has a purpose over time.
Are you saying that Sony/MCU gave everyone shitty characterizations and storylines so that the franchise could reserve the good stuff for some later time? I don’t follow. Couldnt they be good characters for many movies, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Can’t you just keep developing them, giving them fresh challenges and growth?
I agree that it wasn’t just MJ that the Home trilogy did wrong, although she’s the one I care about the most. @lila-rae has talked about this.
In one way I’m glad that Spider-Man is staying in the MCU. Because I want to see where they are going with the whole secret identity being ruined thing and if Spidey is going on the run or will be under the thumb of someone or in the Raft prison. (Also if Jake G can come back as Mysterio because he pretty...). On the other hand? Spidey cleaning up another one of Tony’s messes? No thank you (I’m just assuming that’s gonna be the plot).... your thoughts?
It would be interesting to find out what happens and how Peter deals with this. As a sidebar, the MCU Spider-Man is probably my least favorite version of the character to where I didn’t even watch FFH. I read the spoilers and know what happened but I can’t say my actual interest extends to more than curiosity unless they change things. There is a wealth of potential in how it plays out and can give Peter more layers to his character since he no longer has the safety net of a secret identity. I feel like even if the MCU was removed from the equation, the fallout would have been addressed unless they were going for a reboot. It would have just been done in a way that would have excluded references to the MCU but the overall plot of Peter’s identify being revealed would have hopefully remained.
They’ve made Peter a junior version of Tony, even to the point where they share the secret identity being revealed. Except one was by choice, the other wasn’t. I hope they use this opportunity to give Peter some growth and not stick to “what would Tony do?” This is where their paths can diverge despite the fact the MCU intertwined the characters so much that it’s expected that Tony is somehow the main focus. Spider-Man shouldn’t be playing a sidekick to Iron Man.
They are many movies in and need to now focus on Peter in the next -- they’ve exhausted the mentorship and background plot. His character was built around Tony and I’m hoping they take the Tony shaped training wheels off to let Peter drive the plot. Even if it wasn’t Tony as the mentor, I expected by now to have the main character take what the mentor gave them and come into their own. With the MCU involved once again, I don’t expect Tony to be left out but he needs to remain in the peripheral, not forefront.
