Thea Vidale: Keepin’ It Too Real

Thea Vidale has been in the comedy business for a very long time, and she’s still going strong. I first saw her do stand-up for fellow comedian Gabriel Iglesias’ Comedy Central show, Stand-Up Revolution, and I’ve been following her ever since. 

In her stand-up, Thea mostly shares with the audience her experiences as a mother to her four children, but another subject she is largely known for candidly talking about is sex. Thea is unapologetically bawdy, joining the ranks of countless other women in comedy who have refuted the notion that they can’t be vulgar or sexual. Thea talks very openly about enjoying sex, her disdain for weak men, and even goes so far as to give both women and men tips for a better love and sex life. 

In this sense, Thea’s humor reflects the idea of women’s humor being transgressive--she “hijacks” male space and heterosexuality (Mizejewski) by both poking fun at weak men and emasculating them, and by being assertive with her own sexuality.
