I Lov It - more on Tivoli
We have now been to Tivoli six times and are in positive credit on our gold card. I thought I’d do another quick post to try to convey the blend of magic, joy and terror that is Tivoli! Imogen has been taken to a theme park six times in seven weeks. This probably makes her spoilt in most peoples' books, but also rather worryingly desensitised to ride danger. On her first visit she was hesitant about anything that looked fast and whizzy. By the time we visited with Bedstemor and Bedstefar she was on the front row of the mountain roller coaster (albeit more through queuing luck than design). Imogen has taken to shouting “I love it” when she enjoys a ride. By coincidence Tivoli spells I lov it backwards. Perhaps Tivoli started trading on this when a well known burger restaurant released it’s current jingle.
Albert has also completed his first ride, trundling around Tivoli on the Trolley bus. This is a little electric ride that takes you on a quick tour of Tivoli. Most people at Tivoli are bound to be almost run over by the trolley bus with it’s silent approach and then jump out of their skin when the bell rings. In this photo Albert looks a little apprehensive about the ride; this is just his default facial expression when he is not smiling. He is constantly taking in the world and scheming to take it over like Stuey in Family Guy. I think next visit to Tivoli we’ll take him on the Ferris wheel to see what he makes of that.
Here is an aerial shot that I took of Tivoli from the top of the Christianborg tower. This is the tower on top the Danish Houses of Parliament and it’s free to go up. I love this photo as not only do you get a good sense of Tivoli’s rides but you can also pick out several locations. The tromp l’oeil archway is on Sønder Boulevard right next to where we are living, whilst the big crane in the back ground is on the edge of the Carlsberg district.
Rides you can see in this photo are:
The Demon Roller Coaster in Red. The biggest ride here, but only last about 40s and feels very safe.
The Golden Tower tower drop in yellow.
The Star Flyer with the green tower and dangled seats.
The Rutschebanen, 100 year old mountain roller coaster (white peak of mountain just visible).
Vertigo, the pane ride, in sky blue with upside down plane.
Ferris wheel balloons just in front of the mountain.
Abi convinced me that it would be romantic to go on the star flyer ride. This is the only ride that I’ve ever been on where you are frisked to make sure nothing is in your pockets. I also couldn’t wear my glasses due to the risk of them flying off. As it turned out it wasn’t romantic as we couldn’t sit next to each other. Whilst ’flying’ around our eyes watered due to the wind speed and attempting to look at the view induced extreme dizziness.
We spent a long stint at Tivoli with my brother and sister-in-law and gradually built up to some of the bigger rides. Bro and me took on the tower drop, which is very similar to a ride at Drayton Manor, in the UK. As you can see from this photo expertly taken by Lisa, the ride is not at all scary.
That day we ran out of time to do the plane ride as it was getting late and the queue was huge. I had return for this one and convince Andy Welling to do it with me. We’d just been roasting in a very hot and airless Ny Carlsberg Glypotec so what better way to cool down than to do just this one ride in the rain. I coerced Andy into going on; he does’ t like heights but didn’t want to lose face. We selected to ride this one in 5G mode with a few other tricks thrown in. The ride was fairly horrific but quite enjoyable, if it’s possible to write that in the same sentence. I felt dizzy for about the next 10mins and I think it took four to five hours to recover. If I ride this one again I’ll avoid doing it with a hangover and only two hours after a large brunch.
Tivoli really comes alive at night time. Although it doesn’t get astronomically dark here, it’s dark enough to appreciate the illuminated rides. At 10.45pm each night there is a laser, lights, smoke and sound show over the lake that is pretty spectacular. The gardens and fountains are also superbly lit, taking on a magical appearance at night. Here are two high quality photo’s taken by my bro to try and convey the magic.
The Chinese Pagoda by the Demon ride.
The Lotus fountain at Tivoli with Tivoli’s iconic theatre building in the background.
