Are the spider cauldrons like his... pets? Functional pets? Also I have a candle holder that looks very similar to the spider cauldron (except candle-sized not cauldron-sized) if you want to see it I can take a pic and tag you in it.
(it’s actually one special old cauldron. I drew it three times sometimes to portray it running hehe)
I labeled it his servant.. pet-like companion. As it was one of his unauthorized creations- so only known to Severus. It was supposed to monitor the potions’ progress and respond to its master’s commands by voice to understand the period of time a potion needed to be stirred or simmered, recognize ingredients by taste. It failed most of the time, because the cauldron started to respond amicably to the changes in Severus’s tone of voice ( it sensed his voice as vibration on its inner … walls(?) as it where its sensors were.
It tried to respond to Severus, mimicking those sound waves by clanking its body on the floor or using the metallic ends of its stringy legs to tap on its body) Which confused him a great deal as to why this magical device making all these ruckus and he couldn’t find any reason for them.
He began to notice a pattern: The cauldron started to show playful, affectionate behavior that increases depending on Severus’s tone of voice, which sometimes ruined the potion’s brewing. It started to follow him outside his quarters, tangle its strings in his hair, bring him random ingredients as an offering (it was conveying messages based on how the ingredients tasted), tried to climb him (sometimes while in the midst of a boiling session— which caused many losses and injuries). He had enough and stopped using it for a while. Only then he understood all those random incidents were ways of communication— not faulty execution on its part. And he was proven right when he began to treat it as a living… Object! Between them started this mute bond of harmony and understanding.
